The Village will be the largest mixed-use project that Cornelius has ever seen with a whole lot to offer the Lake Norman area.   Even though it is not scheduled to break ground until 2010, with a completion date in 2011, it has already received a lot of attention.  Some nearby residents are concerned about the traffic for the area.  Others see it as a great asset, offering many jobs to people who can't afford to drive into Charlotte and by creating more than $370 million in a positive economic impact.    The Village will cover a 104-acre strip South of Westmoreland in Cornelius and I-77.  It will have 655,000 square feet of up-scale retail stores and restaurants with 3 major department stores.  It will also have 810,000 square feet of Class A office space.  Adding to this mix will be 2...

The massive Village at Lake Norman development planned for Cornelius received the necessary rezoning for the proposed location south of Westmoreland Rd between I-77 and US 21, but major hurdles still remain for the project. In a 3-2 vote Wednesday night (April 23rd), Town of Cornelius commissioners approved the rezoning for the land, but many other approvals will be needed along the way to completion. Complex financing plans for the project will need to be accepted by Mecklenburg County, and the Town of Cornelius has reserved the right to rescind the rezoning if all the financing issues are not to the Town's liking. For the second straight day, Cornelius commissioners delayed voting on the rezoning of land that would allow the go ahead for the proposed Village at Lake Norman development. Commissioners originally extended the Monday meeting in order to discuss the situation further. Commissioner Jim Bensman was unable to attend Tuesday's meeting in person but did participate via phone. The decision was made to delay the final vote until today, Wednesday the 23rd, in order for Bensman to be there in person for the vote. Commissioners are trying to decide if the massive 104 acre development will positively impact the town and its future. The latest information to be released about the Village at Lake Norman project in Cornelius says that the Planning Board will be meeting again later this month to further discuss zoning and approvals needed on the local and state levels. The more than 100-acre project will require a number of road improvements including the widening of Route US 21 from two to five lanes and the widening of route 77 from two to three lanes between exits 23 and 28. In addition an interchange (exit 27) will need to be built as well. Final discussions should be concluded and construction is due to begin in the fall of 2009.
