Don't you find that the line between work week and weekend gets pretty blurred?  Certainly that's the case if you are a full time real estate agent but there are so many other jobs and professions that it is rare to have a full weekend to yourself.  While it isn't unusual for me to work on the weekends, I do try to keep caught up so I am sort of working for the weekends. Sometimes I schedule clients for the weekend because Saturdays or Sundays are the only times available to them to work and I'll do that with no resentment at all.  I learned a long time ago that if I feel resentment working within the constraints of a client's schedule that I need to look deeper into that particular relationship! Now, I can happily say that never happens.  Of course, much of that has to do with the init...

Talk with an old hand in Asheville area real estateAT THE “KITCHEN TABLE”  What makes clients (and I) enjoy “sitting down at the kitchen table” in a relaxed atmosphere to talk about what is important to them?  Our mutual objective is to refine and define their network of referrals. It’s all about gathering valuable information then making wise choices. As a “white-haired” person, I have to say (and I’m smiling) that it is really important to make wise choices - and that includes your support team. FOR SELLERS, as we talk, there’s list of questions: Are you interested in placing your property IN or ON the market? Is timing important to you? How do you, the decision-maker, establish a fair market value for your home? Understand timing, and market temperature? Assess the responsibility of ...

A new home is one of the biggest purchases homeowners will make in their lifetimes. Regrettably, sometimes costly mistakes are made by various parties of the transaction - builders, remodeling contractors, or even the new homeowners, themselves. Storing Household Goods on Garage and Attic Trusses. Garage and attic trusses are designed to support the weight of the roof and ceiling and not the weight of anything else. Unfortunately, many homeowners view the space in the attic and above the garage ceiling as a great place for additional storage. Storing household goods in these areas can result in sagging and even a possible collapse of the roof structure. If a homeowner wishes to use this space for storage, a structural engineer should be consulted to determine if additional reinforcemen...

It is well known ( and so documented) that Post50+ People -overwhelmingly-prefer to stay in their own homes. As a result, making wise real estate choices for positive aging is on the radar of many real estate brokers today. Many are tuning-in to the Aging-In-Place market because it is such a fast-growing segment. Many are well aware that residential remodeling, in particular home modification for aging-in-place, is a driving force in that market. But how does this impact buyers/sellers and investors in terms of Post50+ homes    It's all positive  when it comes to  the preferences and needs of Post50+ PeopleMany people (regardless of age or physical challenges)  are quick to let you know what is important to them .  A REFOCUS KIND OF UN-RETIREMENT- Asheville REALTOR StyleSeasoned (“old”) REALTORS do not retire they simply refocus. Most REALTORS who have been around for a long time have always valued quality of life. We understand our clients’ desire to be alive in the place where birthdays through the years are celebrated- including that 65 –year milestone- the home where we raise our children, make memories, and enjoy times with friends and loved ones.Over the years, it has become apparent to us that certain “conveniences” (ask me for my top 5) can work for all home-dwellers regardless of age. Planning to include these “conveniences” with simple (not too costly) modifications and/or more substantial residential remodeling/ home modifications to fit lifestyle needs can start today. But where do yo...

TOMORROW :   *** WEB 5.0 ***  Is it set to address the authentic EMOTIONAL interaction between our clients and their computers? That is something I have have been wondering - wondering, too, what this might mean to buyers, sellers and real estate brokers and our transactions. And then, wondering if the interaction might become a daily" thing" for many of us. According to the science of neurotechnology, that's a strong possibility.TODAY::   *** WEB 2.0 - 4.0 ***  The web remains " emotionally" neutral at this point. It does not perceive/ use our emotions. But the winds of change are close at hand bringing a storm of headphone-wearing interaction – where people interact with content that interacts with their emotions or even changes in facial recognition/expression. Here's what Spunky want...

Our Generation Our Choice – how germane that phrase seems to me today as wildfires continue to burn in our area. Not long ago I read an article focused on the energetic student presence in establishing and building a sustainability legacy at UNC Asheville.I thought about that today as my four-footed furry friend and I walked the NC Asheville campus where sustainability awareness was surely expressing itself – a LEED Gold Certified building, seven other buildings heated and cooled by ground-thermal wells beneath the campus quad, and a 112-panel solar array on the roof of the Wilma M Sherrill Center – all in evidence. And there was this sign – possibly a" sign" of the incredible momentum of life in the forests, and things to come: OUR GENERATION OUR CHOICE."

HOME RE-IMAGINED Have you heard any number of  Post50 People say they are ready to  "scale down"?  A recent survey revealed that ... and more!  It seems that “boomers” have a significant attraction to tiny cottages. What drives this attraction? To begin with, you can pack a lot of great ideas into a small space.   COST: It is way less expensive and way more budget-friendly to live in a  small home. And, when compared to “assisted living” the cost-savings can be sizable. (see side-by-side cost breakdown HERE.) http://www.whitehair365.com/ageold.html  Additionally, for Post50 People who desire to  live independently (aging-in-place)  a small abode makes sense. The typical dollar investment for a small cottage ranges between $45,000-100,000. That’s workable especially when compared to  th...

When It Comes to Adding Value to Your Home Simple Updates Makes Sense Considering selling your home? if so, you may also want to consider coordinating a few simple projects.look for those that can add value to your home.Start with Curb Appeal – a little landscaping can go a long way. Manicure your front yard.Trim overgrown bushes. Arrange fresh mulch. And think about orchestrating affordability – e.g. smaller-sized trees in places where they will offer future shade could be a wise investment. ( As you know, shade can reduce cooling costs and that is a great selling point.) Brighten the Entrance. Select a number of colorful pots to hold a charming array of plants to place at the entryway. This can attract attention and, together with a freshly painted front door , can make a significant...

Asheville Real Estate Journal A client asked me if I had some ideas about creating community here in the Asheville area. With a sizable dollar investment in cash on hand, that client was particularly interested in how best to create "Pocket  Neighborhoods"... but was undecided about the approach to be taken. Should the development start from scratch? Or should it work with up-fitting a neighborhood already in existence.  Good questions!  Here (below) are SEVEN (7) links to posts written over the years that might be helpful when getting very clear about how to answer those questions:   1. A Coming Trend? “Boomerlicious” Pocket Neighborhoods 2. Pocket neighborhood development- Asheville- Ross Chapin local ... 3. activerain.com/.../pocket-neighborhoods--radical-boomers-asheville-stylePocke...
