Dr George Washington Chase started the Chase Candy Company in 1876 when he had difficulty of raising a family on a doctor's meager wage.  His son persuaded him to hire two expert candy makers and worked the idea into the Chase fine confections, working on the second floor of the store.   In St. Louis, Mr. Busch was brewing his first batch of beer and Alexander Graham Bell was making his famous telephone call.   Chase Candy became known throughout the Midwest in a few years for the hand dipped chocolate candies.   Cherry Mash became one of the countries best selling candy bars, after being firstly named the Cherry Chase and secondly known as the Cherry Chaser around 1918.  The company by the mid 1920's had made over 500 different ca...

Western Tablet Company plant has been an integral architectural part of St Joseph since the early 1900's.  Not only was this where the original BIG CHIEF TABLET was made, but also the number of jobs at the factory.  The Western Tablet Company held the original copyright of the popular writing notebook but was sold later to the Mead Corporation.  In 2004 Mead closed the St Joseph plant.  The Big Chief Tablet was a popular writing notebook for several generations of young children.  It featured widely spaced lines, easier to write in for those learning to write.  It's prominence however, was the cover's representation of a native American in full headdress "Big Chief".  Schools provided lists of required items to parents spelling out the necessary supplies, citing the Big Chief tablets...

I finally had the opportunity to go to this home improvement company yesterday.     Dillon Company opened in the mid 70's as an insulation company during the energy crisis. In the mid 1980's Dillon's expanded to a complete home improvement company specializing in exterior home improvements and remodeling. I have read about Dillon's and their superior workmanship but today I had a chance to visit several of their recent remodeling projects with the owner Randy Rowland.  The two kitchen projects were a beautiful change of new kitchens and windows to enhance the quality of natural light.                          Randy said Dillon's also specialize in window installation, entry doors, siding, awnings, room additions and sun-rooms.   Their employees are residents of St Joseph and local ne...

This is a win for the people of Missouri by bringing the Kansas City Chiefs training camp to the teams home state. Senator Charlie Shields has worked for several years to bring the current Wisconsin based training camp to Missouri. The Missouri Development Finance Board approved tax credits that are a vital step in securing St Joseph and Missouri Western State University as the new home of the Kansas City training camp.  The board approved $25 million in tax credits for improvements to Arrowhead Stadium, a publicly owned facility, where the Chiefs professional football team plays.  Part of the credits would go toward building a new training camp facility at Missouri Western State University.  The facility is expected to open in 2010. The Chiefs could attract 5,000 visitors a day to St J...

Alexis Bremer of St Joseph recently won the News Press Holiday Candy Recipe Contest according to the paper by a land side.  Dainty and rich (and chocolate, which impressed the judges), the cherry-topped cookies tasted more like candy.  One bite was all it took to finish it off.  You can't do that with most cookies.  Ms. Bremer says she'll probably use her $100 grand prize to purchase the ingredients for her annual baking day.  An avid cook, she schedules a day long baking session with family and friends for the holidays.   Congratulations to Alexis for the award winning candy/cookies.  You can find the winning recipe here.

Making cookies for the Holidays: Mike Hendricks knows the difference in cookies.  Mike is a cell phone game programer and says he does not consider himself a cook but rather makes cookies because he does not like the ready made cookies.  Mike according to the St. Joseph News-Press entered his "cookie recipe" in the Cook's Country best holiday cookie contest, placing runner up in the national contest.  Mike credits his wife for her help who also has some cooking contest experience as well.  Mrs. Hendricks won the Cook's Country grand price about 3 years ago.  You can find Mike's winning cookie recipe here. Congratulations Mike!

Every year on the first Saturday in May the whole town is ready to watch, or participate in the Apple Blossom Parade and Festival.  The theme of the parade changes from year to year and for 2008 it is“St Joseph Families, the Heart of Our City.”  Many businesses in town consider the theme and build floats,  don costumes, decorate trucks, pull trailers loaded with employees and their families and toss candy and treats out to the kids that line each side of the streets. For many years Evans Realty has participated in the fun, and this year we plan to do the same. Our broker has been “Kong, King of the Realtors” in a movies tribute year, “Mr Monopoly” the year we had the board game theme,  he wore tights and a cape the year we paid homage to “Heroes” and this year…well we have to keep it...

Ideally situated, Robidoux's trading post became the City of St. Joseph in 1843 and remained relatively small until the discovery of gold in California in 1848 which gr...
