Toys for Tots Throughout the months of November and December The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program collects new unwrapped toys for needy children in the local community where the campaign was conducted. This wonderful program has been helping make Christmas a lot brighter for children. If you are interested in helping out Toys for Tots all you need to do is request a drop off box for your business or organization and then let everyone know to drop off toys prior to the pick up date when the toys will then be sorted and then wrapped to be given out to children. You can volunteer further by contacting The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. I know it might seem a little early to be thinking about the Christmas season, it is not even Halloween yet, but this is kind of the point ...

Park & Ride I was thinking about what to say about the Park & Ride system for today's post (post number 99 of my series 100 wonderful reasons to love the Saint Cloud area) this morning. Funny thing is there is not a whole lot to really say about the set up. It is a great way to save on gas, you can get some work done while riding instead of driving and the system is really very simple.   If you work in the Twin Cities and live in one of the surrounding areas of the state you can catch a ride to work by simply driving to one of the Park & Ride lots, parking your car, then catching the bus to the train station in Big Lake, then off to the Cities. In the evening you do the same; in reverse. This saves on traffic congestion, gas usage and carbon output from the vehicles. Parking in the lots...

2012 Olympic hopefuls & BMX Racing at its finest - Pineview Park BMX Saint Cloud MN For some strange reason one of our areas coolest features is still relatively unknown, Saint Cloud has what is considered to be one of the finest BMX race tracks and facilities in the world, Pineview Park BMX. Pineview Park BMX Track started when the parents of two 14 year old boys decided that they really wanted to get into BMX racing. At the time, 13 years ago, the BMX racing track that was available to the 2 young men was located in Brainerd. After months of heading up to Brainerd several times a week with their bikes and equipment to practice and to race, the boys and their parents thought that it would be a good idea to start a track here in Saint Cloud. What started as something a couple of local m...

This blog is going to write itself, and could go unwritten for the most part, and here's why. There are alot of people who won't read this because of the title, unless they think it's about tracking down Buyers, and others who will read it but could probably write it better. One option I considered was putting up the title, with a request to "fill in your hunting stories in the comments ." But that wouldn't be right. Every year at this time I reflect on what hunting means to me, and why I do the work that is needed to go and live in the woods for extended periods of time. Planning, checking and repairing gear, packing, & driving. Followed by all of the rigors of camp life. Then diving, unpacking, cleaning & repairing gear, etc. Some people would say, "Oh, just go to the store and buy it...

Snowmobiling in Minnesota - The Sauk Rapids/Saint Cloud Area Trails & Waterways Snowmobiling is a blast. Getting dressed up in your warmest outfit and going out to play in the snow is a huge pass time here in central Minnesota on a snowy day. The Minnesota DNR Sauk Rapids/Saint Cloud Area Trails & Waterways has a registered 35,476 snowmobiles in their work area. The area has over 30 snowmobile clubs and the state has over 20,000 miles of groomed snowmobile trails, and 18,000 of those miles are maintained by local snowmobile clubs. As you can see snowmobiling is very popular here in central Minnesota. There have been all kinds of snowmobiles in central Minnesota for years. I found this picture of a homemade snowmobile from 1910. The description says that it is on the Mississippi River he...

Tri-County Crime Stoppers of Minnesota Tri-County Crime Stoppers of Minnesotaserving the central Minnesota counties of Benton, Stearns and Sherburne. In many ways St. Cloud, MN will always be a small town, even in the way business is done, but the volume of business is another matter. St. Cloud is a Retail Giant, drawing shoppers from hours away, to this centrally located, easy to get around, horn of plenty! The 2009 census estimate for St. Cloud is 67,136, but the service population often swells to over 250,000. People come here for school, medical care, and quite regularly to buy whatever they need, from cars to clothing, groceries to electronics, building supplies to farms equipment. St. Cloud is a shorter drive than Minneapolis-St. Paul, and less freeway/more ground level, for many people, and, almost everything is less expensive here! Conveniently located in and around the malls are plentiful shops and boutiques. Saint Cloud al...

ARMY Aviation Support & St Cloud MN Blackhawk Facility In 2009 the Army National Guard built a $37.2 million 80,000 square foot hangar to house Blackhawk and Chinook Helicopters. The massive building was constructed on 52 acres of land at the St. Cloud Regional Airport in Sherburne County St. Cloud Minnesota. The new facility was necessary to be built as the National Guard ran out of space at Holman Field in St. Paul. Mostly the helicopters will be flying to Camp Ripley just north of Little Falls Minnesota. Major Shawn Manke said "...what this facility is doing is allowing us to have another facility for training, take some of the pressure off the facility in St. Paul and then allow us to be dual roles so you can support from both areas." We live within a few miles of the St. Cloud Reg...

St Cloud is centrally located in MN and we are just a short trip to a LOT of really cool stuff! Heading south about 45 minutes to the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul provides the most choices of activities and venues.  The Mall of America, Vikings, Twins, Timberwolves and Wild games, the Science Museum, and a list of favorite dining spots to name a few.  The airport is about an hour and a half from our home. Visiting the Twin Cities usually has the added benefit of seeing one or more relatives living around the metro area.   Duluth is about 2 hours to the northeast on the shore of Lake Superior. This is a favorite spot for events like the Bay Front Blues Festival, and Grandmas Marathon, but on any given day we could drive to Duluth and have lunch at Belissio (italian resturant) ...

Years ago I worked with a guy named Ken, who in the middle of summer, had a wool jacket on the front seat of his car. I asked him why he had it on a hot day like this, and his response was, "If you don't like the weather in Minnesota, just wait, it'll change." He was right of course. I have lived in the St. Cloud area for 45 years, and it is very moderate here, but we do see some extreme weather. Most notably, we seem to be on the same system as the Dakotas, where the wind blows hard and the thunderstorms mature and grow. In the summer we get alot from the southwest (South Dakota), and in the winter from the northwest (North Dakota). Most summers here are pretty nice, with temperatures in the 70s and 80s in daytime, and cooler at night. Our central air is on for maybe 10-15 days in the ...
