Another soft water season is almost over. Many boats are already in storage.  But, did you put that boat away correctly?  Here are a few tips to make the spring opener more enjoyable. Did you drain the gas out of the motor?  Or at least put in a gas stabilizer.  Corrosion and the break down of the gas (especially with the alcohol added) can and does cause problems if you don't let the motor run until the fuel is gone. Did you rmove the main batttery and the trolling motor battery(s).  Cold is very hard on batteries and they will last much longer if stored in a relatively warm place.  A battery not fully charged up here in the North land will freeze.  It will be worthless after that.  $$$$$ GONE! The fishing gear.  Was everything still working at top performance?  If not, now is the time...

I hear it everyday... "Wow, fall is sure getting here fast" " I live the color" "I hate the fall, winter is almost here." We humans are all on a different page. Well, so is mother Nature.  Here is a maple tree in my yard.  This brightly colored branch is ready for fall, but the rest of the tree is still in summer green.  Why is this branch in a hurry?  This tree is very similar in that only a few branches seam to want to get fall on it's way while the rest of the tree is basking in the summer glow. Then on the othe end of the spectrum...  This rose bush thinks it is mid may.  That is when it is supposed to stat to bloom.  This is the first blossom of the year.  It thinks it is spring! Mother nature can't get together on when it should be fall, I guess it should be no surprise that us hu...

This sounds so simple...but why don't we often do it.... 1 Heaping cup of Love. 1 Cup of Understanding. 1 Cup of Patience. Lots of Hugs and Kisses. Mix together, add a pinch of naughtiness and A dash of imagination. Simmer for a long time in a quiet place and Serve Daily! Like I said, this sounds so simple but why we don't take the time to do it?  I know we all have a lot to do in this fast pace world.  If we could follow the recipe, I think we would have a lot less problems in the world! It has worked for 58 years and counting for Mom and Dad.

The colors of fall have usually meant the leaves in their vibrant colors dancing in the wind in the bright sun light.  But there is a lot more color out there.  Here some orange mushrooms cling close to a stump on the ground. Much color also comes from the flowers in our gardens.  Some of the prettiest and longest blooming flowers are blossoming right now.   Bright colors are not the only colors of fall.  Here a bees nest 3 feet off the ground gives a more unusual color of fall.  This Mushroom nestled among the green leaves also gives a contrast of color. So you see, if we look close, we can find many colors of fall and they aren't all up high in the trees.

Let me first say that I hate all the Political ads.  They are repetitious, full of half truths and for the most part boring.  But they are good for the economy.  With them our small local TV and RAdio stations are able to bring in enough revenue to air some of the better programs I like to watch.  A friend of mine does sign making.  Usually works alone.  He has added 2 people, Full Time, on a temporary basis, to keep up with the demand for lawn sign. A local printer says his business is up 15% because of the flyer's.   I am sure that the Post office is having a windfall with all the junk I get every week. So, yes, the political ads are good for the economy.  But, what about ourselves personally. This is my brain while being a couch potato (Yea I know it's hard to believe) and watching m...

Ok, I hope this helps a few people out of their daily doldrums...it did me some ...

We have all heard this one.  It used to be when something new came out the saying was... "It's the best thing since sliced bread!"  This saying has been around since the 1930's when Wonder Bread started selling 'sliced bread'.   There have been many sayings around, but the next best one is the title of this post. But, think about the saying , "It's the best things since sliced bread...." If it was such a great thing, what was the best thing before 'Sliced bread'?  Wondering minds would like to know!

After a hot and humid summer, I welcome the cooler nights and even the shorter days.  Mid June it is light until 10 pm and I work outside until then and later.  I am fairly easy to please and adapt easily to the changing seasons.   But, most do not!  This is some of what I have heard around town... In July the complaint that 90 degrees and 70% humidity was killing them.  Yesterday at mid 60's and sunny people were complaining they needed a sweater. In July the complaint was that gardens had to be watered very often.  Today, the complaint is that it is cool and raining. In July  the lawn had to be mowed twice a week...today, the complaint is that the grass seed won't grow. When it rains it's to wet and when it doesn't it's to dry.  68 degrees is cold 74 is comfortable and 76 is hot. You ...

Here is something to think about.  Fall is fast approaching and many of us clean up our bird feeders.   Some of us have never stopped feeding the birds at all.  But, what about the birds that migrate? Hummingbirds are one of the most delicate migrating birds.   They require a lot of food each and everyday.   Keeping out nectar for them to eat keeps them around for the free and easy meal.  But, as it turns cold...should we keep feeding.  Per the Department of Natural Resouces wildlife division, NO.  If food is still around, the birds hang around longer than they should.  Then when they decide to go south, very little food is available and many will starve before they get far enough south to find the next meal.  So, pulling in the feeders here real soon is a must. There are many birds tha...

This past weekend I was able to take in a Baseball game with some family.  It was my first trip to the New Target field, What many are calling one of the top 3 nicest Baseball parks for fans and players alike.   Out in center field, there was a home run contest.  This feature local celebs batting against the Twins Mascot.  The mascot won! Even while wearing the bulky costume! After watching many games inside the Metro Home, being outside and away from many of the problems that the Dome had, was a real treat.  Grounds Keeping is serious business.  Here one of the workers prepares the infield for the up coming game.  We live in a colder climate and a late snow melt could cause a problem.   The field has buried tubes that can have hot water pumped through them to assist the weather in melt...

As many of you know, I started to write for the above on-line paper.    This is a new venture and they only have a few issues under their belt.  The call went out for volunteers to write columns and so I though what the hey... My first article has been a hit!  The Editor put it as the featured article on PAGE 1 !!  (Hey, that was easier than geting a feature here in the Rain! lol ). Editor's note: Terrific fishing story by New EMW Writer. A slightly embellished article of my Blog, 'My strangest catch."   I received an E-Mail from the Editor telling me it was her favorite story of the week.  She is also glad to have some humor added to the pagers. This is a good and bad Scenerio.  Good, that she loved the piece, but on the bad side...I apparently set the Bar very high for myself.  For th...

Oh sure, with a full plate most of the time, just what I need is one more thing on my plate. I applied to an on-line local newspaper, East Minnesota Weekly News.   This is a totally on-line news paper.  I seen a request for writers, and I thought, hey, Active Rain hasn't booted me yet, maybe I will try this. I sent an E-Mail along with a link to my blog and the editor loved what she saw.  She liked my humor and she read some things that no one else was writing about.    The best part is that I DON'T get paid. hey , how much can they yell if I am not liked I figure. I will be using a Pen Name of sorts...'Outdoors with Bill.' I am hoping that doing this column I will expand my writing skills and become an even better blogger. Check it out when you have time.  The first article is an expan...

It has been an exhausting week.  So Exhausting that my Giddie-up-and-go...has got up and went!  No, I am not complaining.  One should not complain for at least 2 weeks of hard work after being on vacation for a week. It is surpriseing how a few little items, back burnered, can cause so much problems when a bit of air hits them to rekindle that glow.  NO, I didn't go lax on my duties, I worked 3 of the vacation days and checked my E-Mail and messages at least twice a day. Sometimes, issues just lay in wait for the perfect time to EXPLODE!   My advice for those coming back from an extended vacation... Be prepared for all HELL to break loose in the coming days.Get a good nights sleep before work the next morning.Take your vitamins, maybe a double dose.AND DO NOT COMPLAIN THAT you are tired...

Being about as blonde as one can get, I am lucky I have a great sense of humor and can laugh at myself. An airline pilot was training in a new Blonde stewardess.  Since it was an layover stay, the Pilot showed the new girl the best place to eat, shop and stay. The next morning as the pilot was getting his crew ready for the return trip, he noticed the blonde was not there. The Pilot new where the Blonde was staying and so he called her.  She answered the phone crying..."I can't get out of my room!" "Why not?" asked the Pilot. "Because, there are only 3 doors.  One for the bathroom, one is the closet and the other one says, 'Do Not Disturb."

It was reported to day, that in Minnesota, open Jobs are up 32%.   That translates into 1 job for every 5 people looking.   Which is compared to 1 for 8 last year. Sounds like great news and I won't say that is isn't, but the report did not say what kind of jobs.  Are they entry level or are they looking for more experienced workers.  This news came on the heels of the a report the manufacturing is up.  This could be very good news.  Now, if we would all just get back to looking for AMERICAN MADE products, this good news could become great news. Come on everyone...employers are looking for more people, let's give them more need to keep them working.

With all the sophisticated instruments our weather people have, they still don't have a good handle on what Mother Nature has in store for us. Over the last few weeks, I have heard from several news sources that the winter is going to be a Hard one with lot of snow.  Now, to day, the Farmers Almanac says the opposite. I do know that the Almanac has a pretty good record of being right or very close.  Our Weather personnel...MMMM not so much. Farmers say hard winter, Corn has a lot of husks and the leaves are already turning.  The acorns are dropping 2-3 weeks early so it will be an early winter. I have been watching the wildlife gathering for their winter lair.   But I have one sure way to know. It WILL be a very hard winter.   My neighbors wood pile is twice the size as last year!

Talk about calling the kettle black! Here you have an iconic sportsperson.  One of the elite of his time being accused of lying to congress.  Now, Congress has the Federal prosecutors pressing charges against him. Now think about this....Congress, a body of our representatives that have lied to us for years with no reprocusions, is whinning because they think that this sports icon lied to them.  I think that the Federal prosecutors need to start charging the entire body of congress with perjury, and they should start right at the very TOP!!!  They are not supposed to be above the law!!

I like to think I am quick witted, but sometimes my blonde roots show through.  But experience does have a way of changing that... A lady lost her purse in a mall full of holiday shoppers.  In a few minutes, an honest little boy brought the purse to her.  "HMMM, When I lost the purse, I only had 1 $20 bill, and now I have 20 $1 bills." "I know" said the little boy, "The last time I found a purse the lady didn't have any change for a reward!"
