I have a facination with old barns.  To me they symbolize endurance of americana in a very deep way.  Some are old and weathered, like this one in the photo.  It makes you wonder on its age, and the people who built it.  They always seem to last longer than residential houses, and some stand alone in fields without any connection to humanity sometimes.  This one was off by itself in a field with an tree growing into part of it.  If this building could talk, I would bet it has some interesting stories to tell.

I thought I would share my last photo taken in January 2014, as a sort of tribute and parting with a difficult month weather-wise.  I took this photo after I had to trudge through knee deep snow to do a property evaluation on a foreclosure for a customer.  I was looking back at the way I had come when I was about half way there.  The home was about 500 yards back from the road, and I had to trudge down an unplowed driveway to get to the front door.  Quite the tiresome task in 3 degree temps.  I am hoping for a warmer February.

I spend a lot of time driving around as a Realtor, and sometimes I am compeled to grab my camera that I keep next to me and take a few shots.  Sometimes I look back on them and see that I have captured something quite interesting or beautiful without knowing it.  Here is a shot I took of a winter highway I was driving on, and after I cleaned up the image with a little exposure adjustment it came out quite interesting.  I thought I would share this 'glow of a winter sky' image on my blog.

With those cold temperatures also  comes snow, ice, and the cold arctic wind. Many residents of Hastings,  Michigan are finding this post-holiday winter even colder, snowier and  more brutal than past winters. With the record cold termperatures and  snowfall in Michigan this year, residents have been expressing increased  concern about saving on their skyrocketing energy costs. One of the  biggest energy wasters, which many locals wou...

Today I traveled to Hastings, Michigan and hit a section of back roads that were still unplowed and snow covered.  The scenery along the way was quite beautiful, and I took some photos of a few barns. To me their peaceful settings remind me of something out of a Robert Frost poem.

Today is Christmas Eve. My wife and I decided to take a drive north to spend a few hours engaging in one our joys, which is photography.  The winter conditions were perfect today for some beautiful photos.  We had an ice storm a few days ago, and the temperatures have not risen above freezing long enough for the ice on the branches to melt, and last night we had some snow and this morning clear blue skies.  The temps still remain in the 20's but the result was some beautiful winter photos which I am sharing here.

Today my wife and I took a walk on the Thornapple trail from its trailhead in downtown Middleville, Michigan.  The weather was perfect and the trail not too crowded, making for a pleasant morning walk.  The Thornapple trail AKA the Paul Henry Thornapple Trail is a work in progress with not every section of the trail yet complete.  When completed, it will be a 42 mile long trail.  Some sections of the trail are completed, some are in development and some are in the proposal or conceptual stage. The route of this trail passes through farmlands, woodlands and small towns, along and over rivers and creeks. The scenic highlight of the trail is its close proximity to the Thornapple River. The trail is a four season adventure for the outdoor enthusiast, living healthy and having fun. It passes...

I was out driving through a rural area once again and came across this row of hay rolls sitting in a field.  I thought the setting was a great photo.  It is quite amazing to see this and consider how much time and energy went into creating them.  I also like the perspective and the symetry.

I was out driving around the countryside this morning in the cold of a January winter.  I had to go look at a house in Dowling, Michigan.  When I was driving there, on my way back I decided to take a few photos of some of the cows alongside the road.  They were a little furry with their winter coats on, and they did not appear very interested in me.  Ususally in the summer time they are more feisty, and will all stop what they are doing and stare at you.  Today only a few did that this morning. Probably way too cold for them to care.  See the snow?

I drove by this interesting tree stump today, and just had to take a photo.  This stump is all that remained of a once large and vibrant tree I would imagine.  It was quite a big one as you can see by the trunk, and it was backed up against this field.  Even though it is dead, and not coming back, it still looks amazing with its backdrop of blue sky.  I took this photo in Dowling, Michigan this morning.

I visited the Kellogg Experimental Forest a few years ago with my wife, and we came across this little covered bridge which is near the entrance to the forest. I was going through some old photos and I thought this seemed like a fitting little piece of Americana to me.  Perhaps a throwback from an era when covered bridges were considered important.

We don't think about rural homes with septics and wells if you live in an area like I do, Grand Rapids Michigan.  Well Drilling Services are one of the last thoughts on my list.  I have public water system.  Then again if you are in real estate like most of us on Active Rain we cross many highways and see all types of homes and water supply systems. I have been spending a bit more time lately in my son's territory which is Barry, Kalamazoo and Allegan counties.  The communities have public water systems but at times home within city limits had not hooked up to the public water supply.  Not unlike many parts of the country the rules seem to go from township to township and county to county on what requirements are followed for water wells. In some area if you buy or sell a home the well ...

Annual Percentage Rate What is the Real Cost of Financing?   Annual Percentage Rate (APR) is a tool that consumers can use as a starting point to compare loan programs. However, it's important to keep in mind that APR is not a perfect system, and not all lenders calculate APR in the same way. While the Federal Truth-in-Lending Act does require any mortgage broker or lender to disclose APR to the consumer, there is no rule written in stone for calculating this number that each and every lender agrees upon. The point of calculating APR is to let the consumer know what the actual cost of their financing is in the form of a yearly rate. APR factors in certain closing costs and fees associated with the loan, and spreads this total over the life of the loan along with the actual note rate. T...

A few months ago I was traveling in the area of Dowling, Michigan which is North of Battle Creek, in Barry County.  It is mostly a rural area, and I was heading up there to show a house and check on a listing I had in the area as well.  It was one of those days when I was ahead of schedule, and I drove past this fence alongside the road, and standing there on the fence was this vulture. I thought to myself 'Well, that is something you do not see everyday.  Might make a nice shot for the blog.'  So I turned around and crept back down the road, and took some photos.  He did not seem to like having his picture taken, and soon took off.  Vultures are very large birds, and have an impressive wing span.  This bird really looked like he did not have any predators that he was concerned about hu...
