Here is another summary of a recent legal case involving a fair housing issue. This case is a little different than the typical fair housing case because it involves the criminal interference with the right to fair housing instead of the usual civil violation. Although this case doesn’t provide much guidance about the "dos and don'ts" under the Fair Housing Act for real estate professionals, I thought it was nevertheless interesting and worth posting. On Tuesday (October 13, 2009), a Louisiana man plead guilty to firing three shots from a shotgun at the home of three Hispanic men and, after they fled, entering the home and setting a fire that burned it to the ground. Johnny D. Mathis plead guilty to three criminal counts, including (1) criminal interference with the right to fair housin...

WASHINGTON - Thousands of first-time home buyers will be able to get short-term loans so they can quickly make use of a new $8,000 tax credit to pay for some of the costs of buying a home. The Federal Housing Administration on Friday released details of a plan in which borrowers who use FHA loans can get advances from lenders that let them effectively receive the credit in advance, so they don't have to wait to get the money from the Internal Revenue Service. Most borrowers will still have to come up with the FHA's required 3.5 percent down payment, unless they work through a state or local housing agency or an approved nonprofit. Ten states have such programs in place, according to the National Council of State Housing Agencies. But there are many other potential uses, such as for clos...

It is a very widely publicized fact that the Michigan economy is in the tank...so can anyone share with me why we would spend 1.57 million dollars of taxpayers money to clean up a shredded tire pile? OK, I know this is a fire hazard...I know it could cause all kinds of pollution and I also know the farmer that has accumulated this 2.7 acre pile of tires is responsible. So why is the state forking over our money at a time when the economy is spiraling out of control?  Let me mention I don't think many politicians work for the people.  I vote for the best of the worst that run.  I personally think very few politicians do the right thing...and they don't vote the way a normal reasonable person would vote.  For educated people they sure must think we are stupid! When politicians are voted i...

Need something to do this weekend; well Jazz fest is here again, in Old Town Lansing, for the 14th year. According to ILoveoldtown.org they are expecting roughly 15,000 people. I have to say I am not a huge Jazz fan but last year was a wonderful time. Not only did I have a great time, it is free! This is a great event that brings so many people to Michigan's capital which in turn helps the local economy. How does that saying go.... Support your town or lose it... I think?  Old town is Full of Great Art galleries, restaurant's Shops. So if you have some free time Friday or Saturday Stop by and enjoy the Music!! Visit ILoveoldtown.org for more information. Here's to seeing you there!

Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, first time Home buyers, and the thousands of people fighting to keep their homes from foreclosure, are coming out the winners with the new bill signed by President Bush today. Matthew Kelly of Geek Estate Blog has illustrated a very nice explanation and recap of the bill.  Many sellers are asking everyday, what about us home sellers who need to sell for job reasons or other normal reasons to sell, have made our payments on time, and who have been the victims of this mess by having the price of our home driven down?  It's been a vicious catch 22 for the responsible homeowner. Hopefully the trickle down results of this first round of solutions will spark the market enough to give these innocent victims of irresponsibly some relief. Now, before you get your feather...

It is crucial that your home looks it's best for the potential buyer if you are to get the best possible price in the least amount of time. A little time now can pay big dividends when you sit down at the closing table. Remember, you are competing with other sellers in your area. Here are a few tips from experts in Real Estate sales. 1. Look at your home through a buyer's eyes. Look at other similar homes for sale in your area. How does your home compare? Tour model homes. These are normally in move in condition. This is an excellent method to understand a buyer's expectations. 2. Make a list. What are the obstacles preventing your home from showing its full potential? Begin with Curb Appeal. Lawn, Fences, Walks, Driveway, etc. Next move to the Inside. Closets, Kitchen, Bed Rooms, Bath ...

As many of you know, at this moment, my home is in Grand Haven along the Lakeshore in Michigan and I am madly in love with this quaint tourist area.  So when a fabulous offer knocked on my door to return to the Lansing area and rejoin Coldwell Banker Hubbell Briarwood as a team member with one of the areas Top Producers....the decision was not made until after much prayer and meditation.  At first I waited for the loud voice of guidance or better yet a letter from my higher power arriving in my mailbox ~ of course, neither happened.  I now realize that decisions like this come on a whisper, doors just keep opening in the same direction, and the feeling of wholeness begins to wash over you while you sleep.  I am excited to say that I am returning to my "home" town of Lansing, Michigan.  ...
