Farmington, MI and Farmington Hills, MI Pothole Reporting and Repair Info Isn't it amazing that potholes appear year after year, without fail? The main reason that they keep coming back is water: precipitation that shows up as ice, rain and snow then seeps into pavement cracks, freezes, causing the pavement and underlying roadbed material to expand. Temperatures eventually rise above freezing, the water melts, creating a cavity or void in the road. Potholes are mostly created when a vehicle drives over the cavity, cracking the pavement and loosens the roadbed material. More precipitation, another freezing/thawing cycle throughout the late winter and early spring, team up to make potholes significantly worse.
