The beauty of rural Western Maine is truly breathtaking.  This hidden treasure of Maine is often overlooked due to its distance from the highway, but worth the scenic and peaceful drive to get there.  The Western Maine Culture website is a great way to familiarize yourself with the area and plan your next vacation. While you plan for one of the best vacations of your lifetime in Western Maine, also check out the Norway Historical Society and The Adviser Democrat, a local paper based in Norway Maine serving the entire Oxford Hills area in Western Maine.

I promised to keep you updated on the progress, so here it is... Beth Coffin, of West Paris Maine, is 25 and lives with Spinal Muscular Atrophy.  The trailer she lived in with her parents was falling apart and unsafe for her and her family.  For over a year, Beth worked with the community to raise money to build a new home that would better meet her needs. After many donations of time and materials and a lot of hard work, the home is now almost complete and Beth and her family are truly excited to be moving in.  This is a great example of a community coming together to help one of it's own.

Beth's house is going up! In West Paris Maine, a community has come together to fill a need of one of it's citizens. 25 year old Beth Coffin lives with spinal muscular atrophy, a disease that attacks nerves in the spinal cord and was originally not expected to live past the age of 2. The family has struggled to keep Beth comfortable and healthy in their trailer which has rotten floors and mold and mildew problems. This year they sold their property and purchased a lot more suitable for the house. Volunteers from the community have worked alongside Beth to raise $45,000 over the past year for a new home. This weekend, the walls went up on Beth's House. Beth, her family, and the volunteers are excited to be able to see the beginnings of their efforts realized. About $25,000 more is needed...

Summer vacations at Whitney Pond in Oxford, Maine were a treat when I was a kid. After a long ride in the back seat of the station wagon Dad would turn off Route 26 and find the way to the dirt road that led to the Milletts' cottage. Our first glimpse of the water would be through fluttering pines. I remember barely taking time to greet our friends, the Iveys, with whom we'd spend our vacation, before donning my swimsuit and jumping into the lake - only to jump right back out. BRRR, it was a delightful shock to the system. Harold and Muriel Millett, who owned the cottage, were also family friends. They stopped by daily to visit us. My memories of the cottage include pumping water from the well outside the kitchen door, playing board games by the huge windows that overlooked the pond and...
