Yes, I love Blackie's Farm Fresh Produce at 968 Minot Avenue in Auburn Maine. So often, we see only complaints about businesses posted on line.  There are so many great businesses here in my area of Maine, that I have started a facebook page to highlight my favorites:  Maine Businesses I Love! One of my first entries is Blackie's Farm Fresh Prooduce. This local business is conveniently located for anyone in Auburn as well as those in the outlying areas.  If you have not yet been there, you will notice right away what a hopping place it is!   This is not by accident!  Customers consistently choose Blackie's for many reasons. First, the owner and staff are so friendly and helpful, you will feel like you are among good friends and family.  Second, they are open year round and carry a great...

Despite recent national reports stating that home sales have slowed, or in some cases fallen off, the Auburn Maine real estate market continues to recover and grow! As you can see in the chart below, the number of homes sold in Auburn Maine has continued to increase every month this year.  In 2009 we saw homes sales rise and fall monthly, compared to the slow and steady increase we are experiencing in 2010.    In June 2010 alone, the number of single family, non waterfront homes sold increased 47% when compared to June 2009.  As you can see, this is hardly the "doom and gloom" scenario presented to us in the national media.  Fortunately the Maine real estate market is seeing a trend toward more stability and growth than many areas of the country. If you would like more information about...

The Auburn Public Library, located near downtown Auburn Maine, is truly the center of the community.  The library consistently offers not only a great selection of books, videos, DVDs, and periodicals, but also a jam packed schedule of events and activities for all ages. I just heard about this great program that is actually in it's third year and wanted to share it as just one more example of the wonderful "goings on" of the Auburn Public Library. Each year a group of young artists and writers, ages 11-14, working on their own time after school, produce an original comic book entitled APL Presents. The program is lead by comic book artist Mike Jordan and sponsored by the Auburn School Department's Community Learning Center and Auburn Public Library.        See Issue #3, 2010          S...

Glenn Aho, Auburn Maine City Manager, addresses issues facing the city of Auburn in his weekly review.  If you haven't yet read any of Mr. Aho's reviews or updates, they are worth a look.  He has a down to earth many of writing and an appealing openess that I feel is truly improving our local government. Click Here to read the latest Auburn Weekly Review. (excerpt below) "One means that the State of Maine took to reduce its budget was to reduce the Homestead Exemption, the popular tax relief program for Maine homeowners. City Assessor Renee Lachapelle anticipates once tax bills are mailed, people will call thinking there was an error where perhaps the Homestead Exemption was omitted from their tax bill calculation. This maneuver by the State will certainly affect Auburn Hall who will ne...

Auburn Maine is joining in the national Click It or Ticket campaign from May 24 - June 6, 2010. Auburn Deputy Chief Jason Moen said, ""If law enforcement finds you on the road unbuckled any time or anywhere, you can expect to get a ticket - not a warning. No excuses and no exceptions." According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration the Click It or Ticket campaign "is the most successful seat belt enforcement campaign ever, helping create the highest national seat belt usage rate of 84 percent. Coast to coast, day or night, the message is simple - Click It or Ticket." Auburn will join cities across the nation with stepped up patrols.  Statistics show that almost half of the vehicle deaths in Maine each year involve unbelted drivers or passengers.  In 2008 alon...

The city of Auburn is the county seat of Androscoggin County, Maine and one of two principal cities included in the Lewiston-Auburn Metropolitan area, commonly referred to as "LA."  Auburn and Lewiston are divided only by the picturesque Androscoggin river and together comprise the 2nd largest metropolitan area of Maine.  Auburn had a population of 23,690 at the 2000 census. After a lengthy legal battle over ownership of the land, Auburn was first settled in 1786 as part of the settlement of Minot.  It was set apart and incorporated in 1842 and the name is said to be inspired by Oliver Goldsmith's 1770 poem, The Deserted Village.   "Sweet Auburn, loveliest village of the plain, Where health and plenty cheered the labouring swain, Where smiling spring its earliest visit paid, And partin...

Like may cities across the country and all towns in Maine, Auburn is faced with difficult cuts and the need to find creative solutions to this year's budget crisis. The city council, mayor, and city manager have been working diligently on this issue and have consistently encouraged citizen involvement.  In Glenn Aho's (city manager) weekly update he states, "Had this been any other year, our tax rate would have dropped by 30 cents. But this isn't any other year. This year, our budget is increasing by 1.27%, but our non-property tax revenues, such as State revenues, have fallen by 23%, or by about $2.7 million. That makes for an ugly balance sheet." I have been impressed by the level of organization, frankness, and willingness to accept public input from the city manager's office and the...
