Last night the La Plata town council approved, 3-2, the motion to annex the land proposed for use in building a new Wal-Mart Supercenter in La Plata, MD. I already hate shopping at Wal-Mart, and a supercenter isn't going to make me hate it less. (Look honey, this is where small businesses used to be until Wal-Mart ran them out of business!) Do we need a supercenter in La Plata? Do we even WANT one? The La Plata town council seems to think so, as does the Mayor Roy Hale, who cast the tie-breaking vote. This isn't the final word as the County Commissioners will still get a chance to weigh in on the final decision to build a mega wally-world in Charles County. I'm really hoping that this plan doesn't come to fruition, but getting the annexation approval was an important step in the process... 09/29/2011

Ok... so as you may (or may not know or care) I have taken up the game of golf.... I am still pretty new at it..and have yet to "hit the links" (that is the right thing to say..I heard it on Caddy Shack)  I am still at the driving range trying not to embarass myself...and I have scored free golf lessons from a golf pro... compliments of my daughter, who works for a country club... :) Along with my new endeaver, I have been looking at all the courses available to me.. holy cow  there are a ton..and I don't know a Jack Nicolus designed one from an Arnold Palmer.. but I am learning... anyway.. CHARLES COUNTY MD TO HELP HOME BUYERS WITH DOWN PAYMENT ASSISTANCE Charles County MD has been awarded funds that will enable them to help Neighborhoods most affected by foreclosures and sub-prime lending.  These funds will not last long. Through the Neighborhood Conservation Initiative's Down Payment assistance Program Charles County will be able to help buyers with up to $39,999, for home buyers with incomes 50 percent or less of the area's median, and up to $14,999, for home buyers with incomes of 120 percent or less, of area's median, to buy foreclosed homes. 26 years ago today my son Thomas was born at 3:33 PM on Christmas Eve in Southern MD.  It was quite an event because every thing that could go wrong went wrong.  By 10PM that evening I was told to return to the hospital in Southern Maryland.  My son was not going to make it.  He was dying.  For those that do not remember the events of the day....Christmas eve in 1983 broke all records for temperature.  "It was the coldest Christmas Eve on modern record in the United States"  The wind chill that night was almost 50 below.  The temperature in DC was 6 degrees with a fierce wind blowing. The gas in my car froze as I tried to drive from LaPlata MD to Southern MD hospital...they had to Medevac my son to Children's Hospital in Washington DC.  I had to drive 10 miles on the shoulder of the roa... 12/24/2009
