Montgomery County, Maryland 'Clean Water Montgomery’ GrantsMontgomery County nonprofit organizations such as local watershed groups, homeowner and community associations, faith-based organizations, service and civic groups can now apply for grants ranging from $40,000 to $100,000 through the “Clean Water Montgomery Grant Program.” The County Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the Chesapeake Bay Trust (the Trust) are partners in the program through the Trust’s grant process.The grant program is accepting proposals for projects that could include tree planting, installing permeable pavers or creating rain gardens. The themes for 2023 are “Diversity or Inclusion.” To participate, students must be enrolled in grades 9-12 at a public or private school, or be in a homeschool program, for the 2022-23 school year. Online Tool Will Help Older Adults Find Transportation ProvidersMontgomery County recently launched a new online tool to help older adults find volunteer ride providers to help them get where they need to go, when they need to get there.The online tool uses GIS mapping to connect an address with organizations, such as nonprofit groups and senior villages, who provide volunteer rides for such things as medical appointments and grocery shopping. New E-Scooter Rules in Montgomery County, MarylandThe Montgomery County, Maryland Council has passed new e-scooter rules that are to become effective in 90 days.Children under age 14, pending County Executive Marc Elrich’s signature, will be prohibited from using e-scooters while those under 18 must wear helmets, according to legislation approved Tuesday by the County Council that also requires e-scooters companies to register with the county Department of Transportation. The New Regulations: A person under 14 is not allowed to operate an e-scooter. Exceptions to this include an assistive mobility device and recreational scooters that travel up to 10 miles per hour. Septic Smart Week, September 19-23, 2022 The Montgomery County Department of Permitting Services (DPS) is reminding homeowners with septic systems about the importance of proper maintenance as the County recognizes the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 10th anniversary of “Septic Smart Week” from Sept. 19-23.A properly installed and operated septic system treats wastewater from a home (toilets, sinks, showers, baths, washing machines and dishwashing machines) and returns it to the groundwater.According to DPS Well and Septic Manager Heidi Benham, there are approximately 19,000 septic systems in Montgomery County.
