(Original Article: Listings The College Park Way)   Last week, I made a promise I couldn’t keep: an inside look at the 1923 Sears “Vallonia” that had hit the market in College Park, Maryland. As it turned out, we couldn’t get in. And neither could anybody else, according to the listing agent–the tenants are defending their fortress! You can read the whole story here. It’s quite ludicrous, actually. To make up for it, here is the Vallonia’s interior as depicted in the 1926 Sears catalog: Surely, the furnishings will look differently (after all, the tenants are supposed to be a group of students), but perhaps there’s a lot of the original trim and other detail preserved. Perhaps we’ll find out one day. As of now, the 7-bedroom house has been “on the market” for almost 4 weeks and the agen...

On the 10th anniversary of her death it seems only fitting that we announce the students who have been chosen as the 2011 Angie Houtz Memorial Scholarship winners. Each year I am in awe of the talented young people who apply for the scholarship. This scholarship was started after Angie was killed on 9/11/2001 in the Pentagon. Criteria for the scholarship include: Attending (or planning to attend) a MD public university or college Minimum 3.0 GPA Exemplary record of community service Despite the tragic way we lost her, I know Angie would be proud of the many students that have been helped in her honor.     The 2011 Winners   Hayley Niad    $3000 winner Attending University of MD, College Park Hayley founded "Jelly for the Belly" a program that encouraged University of MD students to use ...

The University of Maryland Concert Choir and Symphony Orchestra will perform Mozart's Requiem Mass in D Minor tonight, September 11, to commemmorate the tenth anniversary of 9/11/2001.  Faculty members and Maryland Opera Studio singers will join the student groups for this performance at 7:30 p.m., in the Dekelboum Concert Hall at Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. According to the University's School of Music website, this Requiem Mass was Mozart's last work before his death, and it summons momentous events of loss and remembrance of the departed.  "It's an unfinished masterpiece that evokes the tragedy of loss," said conductor Ed Maclary. There is no charge for admission, but you will need reservations.  Call 301-405-ARTS. This concert is one of many events throughout the week to c...

Tomorrow morning, September 11, 2011, members of the University of Maryland community will begin to assemble at 8:45 a.m. in the recently-completed Garden of Reflection adjacent to the Memorial Chapel.  Individuals and groups will walk in memory of those who died in the attacks ten years ago. The walk will continue for the next 24 hours, through the labyrinth. Each participant's walk along this quarter-mile path will honor one individual. Hundreds of people have signed up to walk for for a specific person of their choice or one assigned to them, along with a brief biography of that individual.  Participaants were able to choose the time they wished to walk, and to indicate if they wanted to walk as a group.  Faculty, staff and members of the community will be participating in this Walk ...

The Randy Edsall era begins tonight for Terps football, and we'll be there as the Terps take on the Miami Hurricanes.  We've been season ticket-holders for over a decade, and the season opener always has a certain magic.  When it's a night game, usually followed by fireworks, all the better!  But alas, there's a 90% chance of heavy rain, according to the NOAA.gov website - a pretty reliable source.  Now THAT could put a damper on anything, including this much-anticipated football game.  Will that stop the Woda's?  One thing is for sure:  We won't miss tailgating before the game since our gang parks at the Regent's garage and we can party under cover while my brother braves the elements to cook outside under a makeshift cover.  We'll certainly be in the stands for the pre-game pageantry ...

Lately, I've been running a series on real estate market trends for 10 zip codes in the MD Suburbs that I service on a pretty regular basis.  So far I've run the charts for: Bowie, MD 20720 Bowie, MD 20715 Greenbelt, MD 20770 What I've seen so far is not encouraging.  Prices are still continuing to decline and Day on Market are continuing to increase.  All this tells me is that the foreclosure and short sale market is continuing to be a drag regardless of Government home buyer tax credits. That being said, so far I've only written the blog posts with the charts and stats tables for towns in Prince George's County, MD. Prince George's has been the hardest hit with the housing downturn in the MD Suburbs.  I have a few more Prince George's towns to hit and then it's over to Montgomery Coun...
