Community Spotlight:  Clinton MD   Founded in the 1770s the town of Clinton was originally called Surratt’s Villa and was little more than a country crossroad with a few buildings. A tavern, post office and a few homes.  In the 1800s the area became known as Surrattsville.  The area came to notoriety with the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.  John Wilkes Booth made a pit stop at the Surrattsville Tavern after his deadly deed to pick up weapons and supplies.  It was later alleged that Mary Surratt and her son John were complicent in the assassination plot.  Mary’s house is now the Surratt House Museum.  The town was briefly renamed Robeysville in an attempt to forget the Surratt name.  In 1879 Robeysville was renamed Clinton.       Clinton still retains some of that country c...
