I recently ran across this article about a study in which “Researchers from St. Michael's Hospital and the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences found that people who live in not-so-walk-able neighborhoods have about a 50 percent increased risk of diabetes compared with people who live in walk-able neighborhoods.”  They go on to reference a 2004 study where they found the walkablity of one’s neighborhood may also influence obesity risk.  I suppose this makes perfect sense.  However, I’ve helped lots of folks purchase homes over the years and I can’t recall a single time where one of their desires was a “walk-able” neighborhood.  The article describes a neighborhoods walkablity as being “determined by how well the streets were connected, what sorts of stores or destinations were ava...

I have flown in and out of Shreveport Regional Airport, Shreveport, Louisiana, many times.  There is one thing that always catches my eye as I come and go.  This flag created by school children of Caddo Parish.  This unqiue piece of art which hangs in the window is a beautiful flag created by children from the Caddo Parish Schools right after 9/11. It truly is a masterpiece and you can get lost in reading the different blocks individually created and then stitched together by a master seamstress.  Just recently I was thinking that many of these children are most probably young adults now and may have even forgotten their artwork from over a decade ago.  Yet their tribute to the fallen of 9/11 and the heroes of our nation who rushed in to help others  remains.  This flag reminds us.......

Most buyers have a lavish and grand idea of what they want their perfect house to look like. All too often though, they soon find out that many of their focal points don't match up with the price points. This is when I tell my buyers to look at the big picture. Step back a minute, and take a good look at the house. What does it have that you love? What does it not have that you want? Do the improvements necessary to make this your perfect house match up with the value it will add to the house? (And remember there are only a few improvements that actually give you 90+ % return on your money... So decide if a 40-70% return on your money will suffice given the added comfort and updates.) Make sure that points you're focusing on, aren't points that can easily be fixed. Paint, windows, fixtu...

Allstate Corp. (ALL), the largest publicly traded U.S. auto insurer, is investing in energy and real estate as near record-low interest rates squeeze income from bonds, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Thomas Wilson said. “For insurance companies or long-term investors, obviously, low interest rates reduce the economic upside we have from investing in America,” Wilson said in a phone interview yesterday after Allstate announced fourth-quarter results. “It encourages people to invest in different things. Sometimes those different things are real assets.” Insurers invest in fixed-income securities to back policyholder liabilities and generate income. Yields on their portfolios have been under pressure as the Federal Reserve holds its benchmark interest rate at between zero and 0.25 pe...

One of my fellow BNI (Business Networking International) members, Everado Recendiz, a certified business coach with Action Coach, recently shared a cause with our BNI group, the Shreveport Closers.  He told us that at any given time in Caddo Parish, Louisiana, along with 9 surrounding parishes, there were over 300 children living in foster homes. These foster parents receive no additional assistance from the state to provide gifts for these children at Christmas.  Everado was so moved by this fact that he sent out an e-mail to our entire group, asking if any of us wanted to participate in an effort to bring a little added Christmas magic into a few of these children's lives. He sent several children's first names and their "Santa list". My team and I chose to play "Santa" for a six ye...

Just recently I met an incredible woman from Ruston, Louisiana, who ranks Number 3 in the NATION as a Dave Ramsey Certified Financial Counselor!    As I sat with Kelly Brantley a few weeks ago over blackberry grits (my personal favorite at the "Another Broken Egg" restaurant) I was amazed at her passion for helping people achieve financial freedom! If there is anything Americans need right now - it is FINANCIAL FREEDOM! Kelly and I, along with my assistant, Kelli, who handles all of our Dave Ramsey clients, were meeting in order to brainstorm on different ways we could work together to provide value to our Dave Ramsey clients (I am the preferred provider for mortgages in Louisiana). We were excited to hear about the workshops and seminars Kelly conducts in many areas around North and Ce...

I am so blessed to be a part of one of the greatest groups of business professionals in the area - the BNI Shreveport Closers (Business Networking International) in Shreveport, Louisiana, where I have been a member for more than four years.  We have become more than just business associates - we are truly friends.  I was honored when the entire group agreed to "get their boots on" and join with the Boot Campaign to support and honor our wounded warriors.  Below is the picture of our group this past Tuesday as we gathered for our weekly meeting.  Everyone had their boots on!  Thank you, BNI Shreveport Closers you are the BEST!
