Hammond wins the State's Cleanest City Contest for the Fourth Time in a Row Hammond has won for the fourth time in a row the Louisiana Garden Club Federation, Inc., State Division H, Cleanest City. The judges from the LGCF visited the city on May 7 and notified Mayor Mayson Foster about 6:00 pm that the city won again. "I knew that we were up against some amazing competition in Eunice, Morgan City, Pineville and Bastrop," Foster said. "I know all of their mayors, and I know that being selected over them makes this win all the more gratifying. Congratulations to them as well for their great job." Competition is tough and winning is not a sure thing, especially when judges don’t stick to the planned route. "The judges actually took a wrong turn and exited I-55 by Lowe’s," Foster said. Whe...

A very quick AR success story.  After 55 days of Active Rain, I've written 15 blogs so far... some are real estate tips and some are listings.  One of my earlier blogs described how pleased I was to find my listing blogs at the top of Google when typing a few common search terms. A lady contacted me today about listing her home which expired recently with another agent.  She is now living out-of-town and wanted to find an internet focused listing agent.   Thus, she tested the internet and entered various terms on Google just to see who and what would come up quickly (like an internet interview).   She was led to my active rain blogs on several occasions, read my profile and quickly decided I was the best one to represent her.   I can't wait to add her listing to my AR Google monopoly an...

I joined AR 25 days ago with "0" expectations and little understanding of what it actually was.    I attended Keller Williams Family Reunion in New Orleans, mainly to visit with sign maker, Jack Pratt Signs.   While there, Monte Pratt introduced me to Bob Stewart and the Active Rain guys.  Monte just the night before, told me and my husband that AR was the "future."  Thus, I joined AR on the simple premise it would help my business by networking me to other high volume agents. I can say that so far, I am just as impressed with the things I didn't expect.  Let's just say that AR exceeded my expectations and will pay off big-time. Google Searches Are Today, The Future & AR Delivers Both  1st Page Google Success- This is my 12th blog... Half are marketing tips and half listings.  For my li...

Hammond knitters are needed to help soldiers in a unique and fun way.  The Tealou & Josephine shop has created a group of knitters to knit helmet liners.  These helmet liners are shipped off to soldiers serving our country overseas.  The idea came about when a customer came into the Hammond shop to order a special type of yarn for helmet liners she was knitting for a soldier she knew serving abroad.  The owner of Tealou & Josephine, Gretchen Chauvin, thought this was such a great idea that she presented it to her knitting group.  The knitting group meets every Saturday from 1-2pm at the little shop located at 119 East Thomas Street in downtown Hammond to create the head warmers "in the round".  Anyone can participate.  As long as you can knit 1, pearl 2, you are in!  If you can't make i...

With the temperatures dropping, it is time to get ready for the cold in Hammond.  This means protecting your pipes, pets and and plants.  Wrap your pipes up so that the cold temperatures don't freeze them, possibly making them burst.  Make sure your pets have adequate shelter against the cold temps and plenty of fresh water.  You will need to cover any cold-sensitive plants and give them plenty of water. In addition to your pipes, pets and plants, check in on your elderly friends or relatives to make sure they have an adequate heat source.  Many of our senior citizens tend to be colder normally than their younger counterparts.  So, dips in the temperature can affect them immensely.  If you find that a senior citizen is in need of help, you can always contact the local government to see ...

You can help Hammond raise money for the American Cancer Society by donating money to teams participating in the 14th Annual South Tangipahoa Relay for Life in Hammond on Saturday, November 7th at North Oak Park (2311 N Oak St).  Even though their goal of $185,000 seems lofty, they have already received more donations in their offices than they did the same time last year.  So, their hopes are high.  The thing that stands out the most with this year's teams is the ingenuity and creativity they have used to raise money.  Instead of the standard car washes (which are always nice), a hair salon held a "cut-a-thon" and there was a Fall Frenzy fashion show and silent auction held to raise money by Beauty of Hope.  And the raffle prizes this year are some of the best South Tangipahoa's chapte...

I want to do a quick follow-up to last week's blog about the Northshore Fuller Center.  The Northshore Fuller Center has broken ground for its first project.  Delores Black, who lost her home during Hurricane Katrina, will have a new place to live.  The Northshore Fuller Center and its volunteers will be rebuilding her home.  Delores has been trying to rebuild her home for three long years.  With help from family and friends, Dolores saved $65,000.  She discovered that, even with the money she had saved and the plans a friend drew up for her, she still could not afford to rebuild. Her daughter, Beverly Black, approached the director, Charlie Park of the Webster Parish covenant partner of Fuller Center, to ask if the center could help her mother.  Beverly received the good news that Davi...

The Northshore Fuller Center has opened its doors in Hammond.  The Northshore Fuller Center is a non-profit organization spearheaded by David and Tamara Danel that serves the housing needs of low-income families in the parishes of Tangipahoa, St. Tammany and Livingston. As with most non-profit organizations, the Northshore Fuller Center needs help.  Before you get your checkbook out or look to see if your budget can manage another donation, consider giving your time.  The Northshore Fuller Center needs you.  You are a valuable commodity within yourself.  Volunteers are needed to serve as board members and to serve on various committees.  College students to retirees, you are needed; whether you can pick up a phone or swing a hammer, you are needed.  There are talents that you may not ev...
