Southwood is not one of those neighborhoods that has a fancy entrance sign.  Instead, it quietly sits off of Belle Chasse Highway in Gretna, off of the radar of people who aren't from the West Bank...a little hidden gem of a neighborhood with well kept homes and yards. The majority of the homes are ranch style single stories, although there are a few 2 story models sprinkled on streets with names like Sugarpine, Cottonwood and Firethorn.  Just a few miles from NAS JRB New Orleans, Southwood is a quick commute for military members who can't swing the higher prices of neighboring Belle Chasse. The average Southwood home has 3 bedrooms, 2 baths and about 1800 square feet of living area.   Priced from the low to mid $100s, the neighborhood is affordable and provides some excellent choices f...

This year was the first one in a long time that I wasn't able to attend all three days of the annual Heritage Festival in Gretna LA.  But, despite the fact that I missed the final day, I was still able to get some pictures and video of all of the festivities.   The festival seems to get bigger every year, but still manages to keep that small town feel that I love so much. Hope you enjoy the photos!         For more news and events on the West Bank of New Orleans, please visit West Bank Living

Yesterday was the soft opening of Petite Cupcakes in Gretna and the ladies were nice enough to allow me to take a sneak peek during their last minute preparations for the grand opening of their location at 2766 Belle Chasse Highway in Gretna.   The store was filled with cupcakes and a whirlwind of activity as they were frosting and decorating pan after pan of hand held goodies.     This is definitely a family affair as moms and mother-in-laws were on hand, helping to set things up and get ready for customers.  How wonderful to see another locally owned business put down roots on the West Bank!  I hope that everyone will at least stop in to say hello and welcome the newest business to the Gretna/Terrytown area.     Petite Cupcakes, which is military owned, offers a 10% military discount ...

There have been sushi spots popping up all over the West Bank of New Orleans and I'll be the first to admit that I haven't tried them all.  One place that I go back to time and time again is Cafe Zen, right on the corner of Belle Chasse Highway and Wall Blvd. on the edge of Terrytown. They started out in a much smaller spot in the strip center location a few years back, but now they have a nice corner space with plenty of parking and a much more open, comfortable feel to the entire restaurant. Reasonably priced and with good service, you'll forget you parked next to Winn Dixie the minute you are seated.  Greeted with traditional warm towels and complimentary noodle salad, it's an excellent way to spend your lunch hour or dinner time, whether you opt to sit at the sushi bar or choose tab...

I recently had the opportunity to spend some time in downtown Gretna and had forgotten what a charming, fun place it is.   With the open air market this weekend and always excellent restaurants I'll be making sure it's nearly as long till my next afternoon there. Despite the heat, live local musicians added to the lightened mood, and just enough breeze blowing off the Mississippi made it even a pleasure to sit out on the nearby coffee shop patio for delicious iced tea. Ahhh!

Developed in the 1980s, the Park Place subdivision is located in Jefferson Parish, in Gretna, Louisiana. A collection of condos and single family homes make up this community of well kept residences. More than 20 years after the first owner moved in, the neighborhood has matured, with many homes boasting mature shade trees and some beautiful landscaping. Katrina did quite a bit of wind damage in the area, so many of the homes have newer roofs and updates that continue to keep the houses in demand. Map of Park Place It’s easy to get to anywhere on the West Bank from Park Place, but you don’t have to go far to find shopping, dining, golf, parks, playgrounds and more. Downtown New Orleans is only minutes away, with Terry Parkway bringing you right onto the Crescent City Connection.   What ...

It’s funny what you get used to when you grow up here.  It’s not until we have visitors that I’m reminded not everyone buries their dead above ground.  The vaults in the Hook and Ladder Cemetery take up an entire block, bounded by Newton, Tenth, Eleventh and Lafayette Streets in the City of Gretna.  From the City of Gretna Website: The Hook and Ladder Cemetery was established around 1859 and contains monuments of interest, including the those of John Ehret, the first mayor of Gretna and Louis Oscar Fried, the first casualty of the skirmish between the United States and Mexico. Tombs in the cemetery range from very modest to much more ornate sites finished with granite or marble.  Catholic families in the New Orleans area usually spend some time at the cemetery the last week of October, ...

There are so many places along the West Bank of the Mississippi River with a wonderful view of both the river and the New Orleans city skyline.  There’s a bike path on the levee in Algiers Point that starts at the ferry landing and continues into Gretna, where this photo was taken.    On weekdays, there are very few people wandering around here, so it’s a perfect spot to stop and enjoy the view from.   Just park along the River Road (1st Street) and walk right up the steps near the amphitheater.  Bring your camera, since there is sure to be something to take a picture of, whether it’s the bridge, the water, a passing ship or even just a park bench.   For information about living on the West Bank of New Orleans, feel free to contact the West Bank Living Team.
