Shawnee, Kansas was originally known as Gum Springs because the Shawnee Indians lined a valuable spring in the area with Sweet Gum tree trunks to keep the spring from becoming fouled and filled with silt.  The town today has encompassed other small communities such as Monticello, Monrovia, Holliday, and Zarah with gradual annexation.  Members of the Shawnee Indian tribe figured highly in the settlement of Shawnee.On February 2, Shawnee sponsors the Cinderella's Ball - Daddy & Daughter Date Night.
