British Musician, and TV presenter,Mylene Klass has caused a huge debate in the UK about a home owners right to self defence when an intruder breaks into their home. Unlike in the US where burglars are fair game upon trespass the British law is a lot more complicated. Myleene Klass was warned by police for waving a knife at teenagers who were peering into a window of her house late at night. She was in the kitchen with her daughter upstairs when she spotted the youths in her garden just after midnight on Friday. She grabbed a knife and banged the windows before they ran away. British police warned her she should not have used a knife to scare off the youths because carrying an "offensive weapon", even in her own home, was illegal. Klass's spokesman, Jonathan Shalit, said the former H...

Jon Hamm and January Jones, channeling their Mad Men characters. Photographed at the Lightbourne House, in Lyford Cay, Nassau, the Bahamas. Photograph by Annie Leibovitz; styled by Michael Roberts. Entering its third season on a fresh wave of Emmy nominations, AMC’s Mad Men is the most stylish—and perhaps best—show on television. Inside its meticulous reconstruction of the precipice that was New York advertising circa 1960, where the men and women of Sterling Cooper smoke, drink, love, and lie, the author learns about the struggle of Mad Men creator (and former Sopranos writer) Matthew Weiner, the casting of Jon Hamm and January Jones as Don and Betty Draper, and the obsession that fuels each episode. Hearing “Islands in the Stream” should inspire you to do more than change your radio station. Before Dolly Parton and the Bee Gees made it the centerpiece of their pop confection, the name more readily sprang to mind as the title of Ernest Hemingway’s famous novel, parts of which he wrote while on Bimini, in the Bahamas, so inspired was he by the islands’ fishing and diving. So warm and yet so chill, the Bahamas has long been a source of legend and lore. A lost underwater continent and a fountain of youth allegedly dwell among the islands, and the beaches themselves can best be described as legendary. Whether your aim is to find a quiet place to pen a bestseller or find a hammock to read one, the Bahamas' some 700 islands and cays fire the imagination and warm the heart and body with t...

In April 2009, the Treasury Department decided to allow life insurance companies to apply for bailout money from the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP). In order to qualify for the funds, an insurer had to own a federally chartered bank. Although several companies, including Prudential Financial, Lincoln National, and Hartford Financial, did own such banks and had applied for TARP funds in 2008, the government did not give them any funds at that time, instead focusing on other industries. After the initial announcement, the shares of several life insurance companies rose broadly. This trend indicated that TARP funds would stabilize the life insurance industry, which had suffered severe losses over the past year. Though 12 companies initially applied for aid, just two — Hartford and Li...

UK overseas buyers seeking retirement or investment made Spain the No.1 place for them to buy real estate abroad. It offered easy access by low cost airlines and affordable property as well as lower costs of living. 2009 saw a change in Spanish real estate fortunes and the withdrawal of the UK buyers interest on a huge scale. It is fair to say that Spain's real estate market is in trouble with UK buyers. The Spanish property market has not only been victim of oversupply and house price falls but also a scandal concerning planning permissions reversals. A survey by overseas property website Homesgofast.com found the number one concern for overseas buyers considering buying  real estate in Spain were fears over planning regulations.   The survey targeted people that had inquired about bu...
