In the last few weeks economy became number one topic in the news and a reason for huge concern among Americans. There is a great deal of confusion about what really caused the problems we are facing now and what options are available to deal with them. Unlike many commercial media shows, Marketplace by American Public Media offers an in-depth coverage of the current financial crisis from many perspectives. The show can present even the most complex topics in an easy to understand, jargon-free way. I recommend Marketplace (available through National Public Radio) for anyone interested in learning more about how our economy works and making sense of current events on Wall Street and beyond. Marketplace is also available on-line from where you can download for free their daily podcast. Ha...

The bailout deal is dead in the water. No amount of persuasion from the President and both democratic and republican leaders could stop the revolt by republican members of the House. For a bill that was so painfully negotiated and agreed upon by the President and leaders of both parties to fail when the entire World was watching - this is something unheard of. The history was made today. We are going to remember this day for a long time. Even before the bailout failure, American consumers were nervous to open their morning newspaper fearing yet another bank meltdown. Day after day everyone was getting more and more confused. For instance: the average number of houses for sale in Arlington Heights Illinois is increasing every month since March. Does it mean there are so many great deals ...

The unthinkable happened. Lehman Brothers are now a bankrupt company. There was no white knight to save them over the weekend. The U.S. Government refused to put more taxpayers’ money on the line even that in a very similar situation 6 months ago, the Treasury did not hesitate to bail out Lehman's competition - Baer Sterns. Experts say the Government decided to give financial markets a clear message that it is done saving private entities no matter how big or influential they might be. After all, just a week ago, both Fannie May and Freddy Mac have been saved from bankruptcy at the potential cost of 200 billion of dollars. So why did the U.S. Government put such an astronomical sum of our money on the line a week ago but refused to do so for Lehman Brothers? Well, Fannie and Freddie are...

Arlington Heights Homes Neighborhood Report September 13th was the rainiest day in Arlington Heights history. A number of creeks flooded the streets and backyards of Arlington Heights homes. All retention ponds have filled beyond capacity with water up to 25 feet deep. To some Arlington Heights residents the flooding created an opportunity to enjoy themselves in an unusual way: swimming and boating in the new "lakes" created in the place of retention ponds. To a 28-year old Rolling Meadows man what was supposed to be swimming for fun turned out to be a tragic accident - he drowned on Saturday while taking a swim across a quarter mile retension pool by New Wilkie and Kirchoff Rd. Let's hope this will be an ultimate warning for all young people who underestimated the danger of dealing wit...

Those familiar with Zillow.com may agree or disagree (mostly the latter) with the method they use to calculate home values. Zillow offers an alternative to market appraisals based on MLS data. Right or wrong, this is one more resource we can use to provide our clients with a feel of the changing markets. Few days ago Zillow.com published its 2nd Quarter Market Report. Among over 100 metropolitan areas of the United States, the most interesting for folks in Chicagoland is Chicago-Naperville-Joliet Market Report. It paints neither pessimistic, nor highly upbeat picture. Most of the towns in Chicago area experienced a 10% decrease in home values with some previously high-priced areas loosing close to 20%. Those who are disappointed with their homes loosing about 10% of their value in just ...
