Thursday, 6 September 2007, signaled the end of an era as the last guests checked out of the Renaissance Wailea Beach Resort and it closed its doors for the last time. Opened in the late 70's, the 345-room hotel was one of the earliest resort developments along the now famed Wailea stretch of South Maui. Located in a prime position fronting Mokapu Beach the resort lies between the exclusive Maluhia condo complex to the north and the expansive Elua condo complex to the south. At one time (as Stoufers) the hotel enjoyed AAA Five Diamond status.It was expected that the Renaissance would be demolished and replaced by a St Regis Hotel but that deal fell through.
