Sometimes Nature is Colorful, Sometimes Not  I stumbled across this photo from Kauai, from a trip we took in 2017. Kauai is nicknamed the Garden Isle for good reason, a very lush, green and colorful place from the mountains to the valleys. This photo was taken, as is, as the sun was setting from Kilauea Road. A rather different kind of sunset that my camera interpreted in its own way. Interesting trees, aren't they? They appear to be Cook Pine trees based on my research. 10/28/2021

A Visit to the Kilauea LighthouseKilauea, Kaua’i  The 3rd time is the charm, they say, and on our 3rd visit to the Kilauea Lighthouse a couple of weeks ago we were finally able to get close, and to go inside. I’ve been fascinated with lighthouses for years, having spent so much time in New England, so it was quite a treat to take a 30 minute guided tour (15 people only) of this one, easily seen from our villa about 2 miles away across the ocean in Princeville.   The lighthouse is located in the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge several miles from the main road, Kuhio Highway.  I sure don’t remember all the details of what the tour guide shared and you can read more about the Kilauea Lighthouse history here. The light is no longer working, having been decommissioned back around 1976... 09/16/2017

Kilauea Lighthouse on Kaua'i in Hawaii We've been to Kaua'i a couple of times and it's on the list for a few months from now. It was such fun to come across the Kilauea Lighthouse not far from Princeville where we were staying back in 2013 (and we could see this in the distance from our condo balcony) especially since, having lived many years in New England, we often enjoyed seeing the many lighthouses along that coast.  Coincidentally at the time the lighthouse was closed - this was during the time of the US Government shutdown in October 2013 that also affected the National Park Service. Perhaps we'll be able to really visit up close and personal on this next trip. 12/29/2016

Cattle Egret on Kauai  On one of our recent trips to Kauai we stumbled upon a very pleasant, easy and beautiful hike through the 500-acre Wai Koa mahogany plantation in Kilauea, not far from where we were staying in Princeville on the north shore. We spied this cattle egret sitting at the very top of a tree who didn't seem the least bothered by our presence. He, or she, was apparently surveying the kingdom in search of some tasty morsel. 12/22/2016

I don’t know what took me so long but on Sunday January 5th, 2014 I had the fortune to eat and explore Common Ground Kauai located at the old Guava Kai Plantation in Kilauea, Kauai. The restaurant grows a lot of their own food or tries to buy locally from Kauai island farmers. It’s not hard to find the Common Ground Cafe but it’s a little off the beaten track. Located at 4900 Kuawa Road in Kilauea it’s located at the end of the road in a residential and farming community. The restaurant is located in a covered area outside. A Visit to Kilauea Lighthouse in Kaua’i, Hawaii We spent an amazing 5 days in Kaua’i for my birthday in early November – I am still enjoying looking at the photos. Coming from New England, I am a big lighthouse fan. After all they are all over the place there, particularly in Maine and on Cape Cod.  Lighthouses are not so common here on the Left Coast, but we enjoyed a visit to Point Reyes north of San Francisco a couple of years ago to see that lighthouse (photo to the right).  It is amazing terrain with incredible views in all directions, and the drive there through Marin County is well worth the trip if you ever get the chance. We were even able to see San Francisco, a distance of about 50 miles I think. We could see the KILAUEA LIGHTHOUSE from our hotel room in Princeville, Kaua’i, ... 01/03/2012

Some people ask questions about making their FSBO houses solar dependent and what influence it will have on the price of the property. After analyzing some statistics I was shocked with the discovery – if you want to increase the value of the house by installing solar system, forget about it. The system will cost many thousands of dollars, plus installation costs (thousands of dollars), plus various permissions, repair works, battery replacement – pretty big money. It will take much time to return this money. Read some literature on ‘green house’ – and find out many interesting and surprising facts. Nothing is profitable. When I was a kid when i went to parties we used to do a dance called the limbo. Two people would hold a post or rod or something and the person dancing would contort themselves and attempt to scoot under the "limbo bar". Each time the bar would be lowered until one could not go under it. For three days in a row, I have been bombarded by lenders promoting their new lower, lower, lowest rates. Could we begin to see interest rates in the 2's or 3's. Kind of like the limbo, the question is "how low can you go?"
