It's almost time to head out to the Performing Arts Center where the Honolulu Symphony will be performing two concerts this evening. Funded by a nice grant, this is the first time that the Honolulu Symphony has been to Kauai for 15 years. They spent most of the last two days traveling around to most every school on the island and performing in small groups: string quartets, string duo, brass ensembles, percussion trios, etc. Tonight the concerts are at 7 p.m. and 8:30.Tis' exciting!

If you've ever been to the Resortquest at Makaiwa Beach or eaten at the Hukilau Lanai, you are probably familiar with the large open lot between them that appears right for a hotel or resort. Well, you're right and the two developments that are earmarked for that land received another boost last week from the county.Just to the right of this photo at Makaiwa Beach are raw acres along the ocean that are planned for the two resorts described. In this economy, if you build, it does not mean they will come. The county Planning Commission last week voted in support of court-mandated amendments to the permits for a pair of planned Waipouli resorts, in the process reauthorizing the projects despite opposition from concerned community members and even some commissioners.A September ruling by 5t...

The Kapa'a Police Station Across from my office is Kapa'a Park & the Kapa'a Police station. Its small and the tourists often chuckle when they see it. My guess is that it is approximately 400 sq. ft. But it serves its purpose in our mellow beach town of Kapa'a on the island of Kauai. This morning I just happened to get a photo of two of our friendly officers. Kapa'a Kauai   This is a photo of the station from the highway. Beyond the station is a beach pavilion and beach. To the right fenced area is the Kapaa Beach Park. The park hosts a variety of festivals and soccer games. My office Kauai Dreams Realty is located in the Seto building across from the park. Kapaa is a great morning town. There are a number of Coffee shops with yummy pastries & tasty smoothies. Aloha Julie

The Garden Island newspaper reports that the Kauai Planning Commission has approved 2 beachfront projects on Kauai's East Side after a court ruling that previous decisions were unconstitutional.  The two projects receiving approval are the Coconut Plantation Village and the Coconut Beach Resort.  The first will have 192 multi-family units and the second will have 343.  Both will have a few hotel rooms as well. I have not heard whether the projects are actually going to move forward, a question in my mind given the current economic conditions.  However the article had no information to the contrary.  I'll report more as I hear it including sales information. The Garden Island article is located HERE. Search Kauai/Big Island | Search Maui | Email | About Me | Website| Phone/Text   (808) 6...

The front page of this morning's Honolulu Advertiser has a story above the fold about the controversial Hawaii Superferry integrating so new high tech devices on their vessels. According the Advertiser, the  Hawaii Superferry is installing a high-tech thermal imaging system that could detect whale spouts more than a mile away and reduce the risk of collisions with humpback whales. Perhaps this will address one great level of concern about the ecological soundness of this transportation alternative. Read the full story about whale tech on the Hawaii Superferry.

One of my friends and clients here on Kauai is a personal financial planner. If you want to know more about him, check out Personal Financial Consultants, Inc. That's Loren's company. Talk about a rough business to be in these days. Makes real estate seem like a walk in the park. Loren has an office in downtown Kapaa and is available for clients both on island and on the mainland. Whenever the market goes on a roller coaster ride, he usually has a bit of calming insight. I particularly liked what he said in his message yesterday and he is allowing me to publish it here. When I went to bed last night, I was watching the foreign markets start 10% lower. When i awoke early this AM, the market was under 8000. But, it did finish higher although it was a brutal week to be sure. How you find s...

Yesterday the candidates running for our county council walked Phase 3 of our fabulous multi-use path. I can hardly wait til December 1st when we once again can walk our dog on Phase 2 of the path that runs from downtown Kapaa to the northern end of Kealia Beach. Read today's article regarding the path that appears in today's Garden Island Newspaper. The next phase of the path will cross over the highway and that's a little more complicated and controversial than the components of the path that have been built so far. When completed, this will be something like 17 miles of bike, walk, along the ocean that is intended to protect beach access in perpetuity.

Kauai Coco Palms Rebuild Cancelled? I have a reliable but unconfirmed report that the owners of the Coco Palms are canceling their plans to rebuild the famous Coco Palms Resort and putting the property up for sale.  The property was severely damaged by Hurricane Iniki in 1992 and never rebuilt.  It's featured in Blue Hawaii of Elvis fame and was run by the legendary Grace Guslander in it's heyday.  Opposition to their restoration plans was reported to be behind the cancellation.  Stay tuned for confirmation of this report.
