Regarding home appreciation on Oahu, Waialae-Kahala saw the largest increase year over year, from February of 2023 to this past month. It was up 52%. The median sales price a year ago was $2,950,000. This past month, it was at $4,500,000... Read More

Hawaii's Best Neighborhoods - Kahala comes to mindLocated east of Diamond Head and extending to Waialae Country Club, Kahala is one of the most pleasant neighborhoods on Oahu.  Great weather, wide streets with paved sidewalks and proximity to the beach are some of the reasons. This listing, MLS 201509982 is for sale at 956 Hunakai Street.  The nearest shopping center, Kahala Mall, is a couple of blocks away.  It's an easy walk and there are coffee shops, movie theaters, grocery stores, restaurants and the post office.  This particular house is a relative youngster for Kahala, built in 2007. Many homes here are 40+ years old.  The large fenced yard is gated, providing a bright, open environment for the family.  An outdoor shower near the gate is great for rinsing off after going to the be...

CONDOMINIUMS FOR SALE IN KAHALA CAN BE AFFORDABLE, BUT YOU NEED TO BE AWARE OF LEASEHOLD. Kahala, known for its beautiful multi million dollar homes both on and off the beach, can be tricky when you look at affordable condominiums. KAHALA BEACH CONDOMINIUM (LEASEHOLD): 4999 Kahala Avenue, right on the ocean, adjacent to the Kahala Hotel and Resort (see photos below). A luxury condominium with views of the Waialae Country Club. I absolutely love this building, but buyers need to consider that all condos for sale are leasehold with Bishop Estate as the Lessor. Price range right now on ACTIVES (not those under contract) is between $175,000 and $385,000. Things to consider: 1. How long is the lease? Leases on the building expire on 12/31/2027. 2. When will the current lease rent be renegoti...

Shopping at the Kahala Mall is always fun, but this time I discovered something I had not seen before: A BUST OF JACK LORD OF HAWAII 5-0 FAME OF THE ORIGINAL TV SERIES. The bronze cast was at first a little hard to identify, but then I saw the famous "lock" that somehow always fell over Jack Lord's forehead. I remember it well, because I had the opportunity to meet him back in the early 70's at various functions. Remember how (Steve McGarrett) "busted" bad guys with sidekicks James MacArthur (Dan Williams - "Book 'em, Danno"), Kam Fong (Chin Ho), and Herman Wedemeyer (Duke). Local TV stations still play episodes of this show, which was the longest running crime show in TV history until 2003 when "Law and Order" surpassed it. Below is the photo I took of the Memorial cast and the plaque ...

My Favorite Ocean Front Communities on East Oahu: Kahala Homes in Kahala are some of the most desired in all Oahu and also some of the most expensive. Generally an affluent residential community, it is located on the southeastern shore of Oahu and bordered by Diamond Head Crater and the Waialae Country Club. Kahala is the site of the luxury Mandarin Hotel and is near the Kahala Mall, a large upscale indoor mall featuring Barnes & Noble, Macy’s and the Apple store, as well as restaurants and other boutiques and stores. Kahala is roughly ten minues from down Honolulu making it any easy commute to work for many. Kahala features both beach front homes and other upscale homes and locations, many with commanding views. Homes were originally built in this area in the 1950′s and 1960′s but many...

Japanese billionaire Genshiro Kawamoto, aged 79, is making headlines yet again, and causing quite a stir on Oahu, particularly in the prestigious luxury home neighborhood of Kahala on Oahu. Kawamoto is known to be a little eccentric, bizarre even, and is not favored by many Kahala residents. Kawamoto has been the subject of a lot of negative media coverage over the years with communities and neighborhood boards registering complaints and even individual lawsuits against the real estate tycoon. Kawamoto first hit the Hawaii real estate scene in the late 80's during what is known as the "Japanese bubble." At this time, the US dollar was down and many foreign investors, especially the Japanese, were buying up high-end luxury Oahu real estate in a frenzy. Kawamoto aquired many properties in...
