People of all ages can visit the steam vents at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. It's got the typical raised deck walkways with railings to protect you from falling into the steam vents. There is a lot to see along the way, too. From the tall grasses with shallow root systems to the wildflowers, to the illustrated billboards of people falling into the steam vents.The day I was there was the first day of the Trump government shutdown. And the park was packed. Although partially closed, Volcano House was open and a few attractions. Hard to believe that prior to 2018, the last big eruption from the volcano Kilauea on the Big Island happened 35 years ago. At that point in my life I was completely engrossed in selling real estate in Newport Beach (southern California). I do not recall listening to music or even watching television in the early 1980s, but I do remember that event. Back then every volcanco I compared to Pompeii. Picturing a city frozen in time, people covered in lava as they prepared dinner.When my husband and I first viewed Kilauea it was by helicopter. I was amazed at how small it was, and the steam emitting from Pu'u O-o. Even more so when we stepped out of the helicopter and I asked my husband what was in the bag he held. He is staying at my house in Kona on vacation right now. A little background: there are 5 volcanoes on Big Island of Hawaii, but only three of them are active. The 5 volcancoes are Kohala (extinct), Mauna Kea (dormant), Hualalai (active), Mauna Loa (active) and Kilauea (active). Most of the lava flow into the ocean comes through cones near Kilauea. Be Careful in Hawai'i I was born and raised in Hawai'i. Its beauty is alluring but it masks its dangers. Please be careful in the water and on the land. The latest tragic death is on the Big Island at the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.A 38-year old man was found 25 feet on the caldera floor. The volcano is inactive but initial reports are that he may have fallen after an apparent fall. This is tragic news for his family and friends.Please be careful in Hawai'i. 07/11/2017
