Black Velvet art workHow many remember when drawings or paintings were often done on black velvet paper?  Seems as if I mostly remember them being used to do bull fighting pictures.  I think there may have been lots of ones done in Mexico.  In fact, google pulls this up regarding the paintings. "Ciudad Juárez, Mexico was a center of velvet painting in the 1970s. A displaced Georgia farmboy, Doyle Harden, was the pioneer who created an enormous factory, where velvets were turned out by the thousands by artists sitting in studios. ... Edgar Leeteg has been called "the father of American black velvet kitsch".This was news to me.  A displaced Georgia farmboy?  It made we wonder about this painting that I inherited from family members from Coolidge GA.  It is of a Georgia boy and painted by ...

Since the weekend will soon be here I thought some folks might be looking for a little outdoor adventure. For those that are headed up the mountain you might want to check out one of the various tubing companies in Helen Georgia. The beautiful Chattahoochee River meanders through the mountains and Helen Georgia. The part of the river that flows through Helen is shallow and perfect for a cool relaxing tube ride. On a hot summer day it is hard to beat tubing through the north Georgia mountains. One added benefit to a few hours of tubing is getting to see your kids off their cell phones or xboxes. Getting back to nature with your family in the north Georgia mountains is hard to beat.

Many modern visitors flock to Helen Georgia in late September though October for the annual Oktoberfest celebration. But what many modern day revelers may not realize as they enjoy the festivities of the fall season is that the area was home to ancient civilizations and was a popular spot long before the arrival of European settlers. Ancient Mississippian tribes inhabited nearly all of the fertile river beds in Georgia thousands of years before the arrival of the colonists. They constructed mounds in the river valley not only to ceremoniously bury their dead, but also to have a place to build important civic structures above the alluvial flood plain. So if you take a trip to the Georgia Mountains this Autumn, spend a few moments reflecting on the rich anthropological history of the reg...

Yes, this morning we have some snow flurries, that is the good news, but the sun is out and they will not stick, it appears, that is the bad news.  Good News, Bad News, how often have you heard it?   Are you thinking about moving to the northeast Gerogia mountains, Helen specifically?  Or our beautiful surrounding rolling hills with mountain views?  Thinking about the Chattahoochee Riverfront properties?  Cabin, Castle?  Want an investment rental, vacation home?  Maybe just a second home for weekends, just an hour and a half from all Atlanta has to offer?  That's right, Good News, Bad News.  The interest rates are low, that is the good news.  they are not expected to stay low, that is the bad news.  The Tax Credits are still in place that is the good news.  The month of April will bring...

About 90 minutes north of Gwinnett County, GA, is the gateway to the North GA Mountains.  Unofficially, Cleveland, GA, is probably the gateway for those coming from the eastern suburbs of Atlanta.  And only 20 minutes north of Cleveland (and Babyland General, its most famous business) is Helen, GA.  It is a Bavarian-styled village, most known for its OktoberFest and tubing on the Chattahoochee River.  Of course, we visited during one of the coldest Januarys on record... no Oktoberfest and certainly no tubing on the river.  But that doesn't mean the town rolls up and closes...  No, there is still plenty to see in Helen.  It is a lovely little town.  There are some great "Bavarian-themed" shops.  There is also a really cool model railroad that captures apline style.  Helen was on the east...

Have you been to Cleveland lately?  No, not Cleveland, Ohio (home of the World renowned Cleveland Clinic), but Cleveland, Georgia (home of the World renowned Babyland General)...  For the last three decades, Xavier Roberts has had Babyland General in Cleveland, GA.  Late in 2009, it moved to a new location just outside of town... toward Helen.  The new facility is pretty impressive.  But, for anyone that visited before their move, you'll feel right at home.  The Magical Cabbage Patch is almost unchanged.  And much of the decor carried over... but the new facility is MUCH larger. And it is still free. Previously, when there was a "new birth", if there were thirty or forty guests... it was VERY crowded.  In fact, the whole facility was often crowed.  In the new facility that isn't a probl...

If you have been visitng our north Georgia Mountains and Helen, you know it is cold outside and it is sometimes cold inside!  The fireplaces and fire pits have been working overtime.  I was unfortunate when i moved here 20 years ago, I got the "light, bright" home I wanted, but no fireplace.  Yes it does have a wood stove, which is okay, but it is not a fireplace.  And it is not conveniently placed to use for heat. All the heat rises to the loft level, and it is blocked by the dining area too!  If you want a fireplace, you want a fireplace!  Something you can see from your sitting area, some place you can actually roast marshmellows, or at least enjoy seeing the flames behind the glass!  Ever notice how many fireplaces you can find in a home?  One inside the house, one in the outside ki...

Driving home yesterday, I happened to look up at the mountains surrounding Skitts Mountain Road in Cleveland Georgia and all of a sudden it hit me, I missed Fall in the north Georgia mountains.  For the first time in 20 years, I missed Fall.  Yes, it can happen.  How many of you missed Fall?  I realized last night in the dark, sweeping off the tons of leaves which covered my deck and walkway to the Chattahoochee River, I had truly missed seeing all these leaves in their splendor BEFORE they fell to my deck in a dismal brown layer, rapidly decomposing thanks to all the rain we have experienced in the past weeks.  For some reason this year we have had unseasonably cold nights, not enough time to sit outside and look at the stars and smell the fire pit with a nice glass of wine.  What happ...

This promises to be a weekend when you JUST, MUST be in Helen and northeast Georgia!  The weather will be beautiful, crisp and snappy, a wonderful example of what October should be, made for fall!  Come on up and see all the leaves, sample all the food, and just plain enjoy!  Just bring a container to take back home some pumpkins and fall flowers.  You will want some comfortable shoes, walking here is sometimes on gravel, rock and yes dirt!!!  You don't want to worry about ruining a pretty pair of shoes and our red Georgia clay is most difficult to remove, so bring comfortable OLD shoes.  Also, think layers.  It will be much cooler in the evenings and warm during the middle of the day.   The gals have plenty to do, but don't forget the guys, plan some time to take a tour of nearby camp ...

Helen and northeast georgia are beautiful areas to visit now.  Yes, the leaves are changing, and we are getting rain, rain, rain, but wait......this weekend is supposed to be beautiful..come to Helen!  Don't wait too late.  Also, the time limit for the first time homebuyer tax credit is fast approaching.  Although it is just October, the mortgage companies are asking for 45 days from taking credit applications (with all documentation) to close and then, guess what???  They are asking for more time.  And they are sometimes asking for as much as 30 percent down from GOOD credit score holders.  Yes, folks, things are almost as bad as they were before, the lenders are controling the market.  Instead of lending to any and everybody, they now are giving any and everybody grief over everything...

Come on to Helen, Ga, you are way out of Atlanta, and it is your way out of Atlanta!  Yes, it is raining, but you can bring your umbrella and enjoy!  The leaves are changing, but not yet at their best.  With the hard rains we are having many leaves fall before they should for optimum color.  However, I have never seen an ugly autumn here!!  Come on up and enjoy an uncommon weekend!  Think about it, can you move yet?    If you can, now is a great time to buy!  Give me a call, perhaps you can talk with a local lender and be pleasantly surprised, moving day may be closer than you think.  Dreams do come true.  Give me your wish list...let's see..

I promised some updates to the fall season in Helen.  Actually Fall begins tomorrow, but here is my first update.  RAIN, Rain and more rain!! Good news for those to the south of us who are needing water, the Chattahoochee River is rolling quickly through our northeast Georgia areas headed for Lake Lanier and points south.  We have been watching the rain for a week now, and if rain helps with fall color, we are in for a beautiful fall.  What is good about looking at property and homes in the rain?  LOTS..you can see any possible leaks in basements, erosion and road conditions.  Running in and out of the rain looking at houses is not the most fun you will ever have, but it has its benefits.  So, don't wait, if you are considering looking at homes in northeast Georgia, come on!  The river ...

Thinking about investing before the market rates go up?  Now is the time.  Rates are already going up an down, my mortgage lenders think it is best to go ahead, qualify, get ready and when the rate you want appears, FIRE!  That makes a great deal of sense, doesn't it?  The news media are already saying the economy is coming back, and although the rates are low, they are going up and down.  Don't wait until it is too late to get those good rates.  Investors need to contact me now in order to take advantage of some very good bargains in our area.  You know the number, you know the name, and now you know the website  http://www.FlynnTaylor.com Let's talk real estate in Helen, Batesville, Sautee, Cleveland, clarkesville and even Lake Burton!!

Have you made plans for Fall in Helen, Ga?  You really should.  Leaf Season has many stages and you can enjoy the early fall season then come back in a few weeks and see the late fall season  Now that leaves the PEAK fall season, doesn't it?  Well, to get here for the peak fall season, you need to keep watching my blog.  When the weather wizards start predicting the "Peak", I will let you know how it looks here.  We are having a lot of rain right now.  Some of the old timers say that makes for great color, others say it knocks too many leaves from the trees prematurely, and makes for a NOT so great color.  I don't know.  That said, any fall season is beautiful.  Be sure and make arrangments for a visit.  If you want to do more than visit, you might consider moving to our area.  Visit my...

Are you sitting on the fence?  Have you decided to take advantage of the $8,000.00 tax credit?  If so you need to get busy right now.  You MUST have your closing on your home BEFORE Dec. 1st...that means you MUST close at the very latest on the last day of November, but don't count on that.  The closing attorneys will be very busy on November 30th.  Ensure you get your tax benefit by closing before Nov. 15th, because anything can happen and if you have waited til the last minute, you may have a delay that costs you dearly!  For your real estate choices in northeast Georgia,in the Helen Ga area,  Call Flynn at 706 839 8841,or, email me, Flynn@FlynnTaylor.com
