The Georgia Sea Turtle Center designed for sea turtle rehabilitation, research and education on sea turtles opened in June 2007 on Jekyll Island, Georgia.  The Center is very much like an emergency room and rehabilitation center for injured and sick turtles in addition to scientific research. You get to see the various patients that are in rehabilitation at the Sea Turtle Center and find out about their injuries and illnesses.  Freshwater turtles (like you find in ponds or in pet stores) have flat feet and webbed toes for swimming while a sea turtle's feet are flippers used for swimming.  A freshwater turtle can move its neck into an S shape to put its head inside its shell while a sea turtle cannot. One of the things you learn at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center is the development of sea ...

Morgan and the Astors.  Later abandoned, the Jekyll Island Club was restored to in 1986.  Jekyll Island's 240 acres of waterfront Historic Landmark District is ongoing with the restoration of the builidings on the grounds.    The watefront views in front of the Jekyll Island Club allow views across the river and marsh all the way to the mainland.   Views of the historic Marshes of Glynn and the new Sidney Lanier Bridge are visible from the ...

Logan decided to take a day out on Jekyll Island.  So, Logan got his driver/photographer and hit the road.  Over the Jekyll Island Causeway and to the right to an 11 acre water park Summer Waves. After leaving the water park, Logan decides what's next.....the beach. Logan poses for the paparazzi at the beach.  Since it is hot and Logan forgot his sunglasses, he decides to move on to the Jekyll Island Club Hotel.  The shade from the live oak trees is a relief on a hot day.  Logan is resting on the limb of an oak tree before he ends his day.  Logan's day is over but he'll be back to visit the historic district, play putt putt golf, visit the Jekyll Island Pier and so much more.  Look for future posts starring Logan....  (All credit for Logan and photos goes to Mom Tiffany Graversen).  Br...

Today was another day to take a quick after work mini vacation on Jekyll Island....we started with a quick walk on the beach. Next a quick bike ride....this is the view where we unload the bikes to start on the nature trail..... A quick stop to shoot a photo of the driftwood on Driftwood Beach.... A couple of rabbits were munching on grass while we biked past...... This little rascal was caught.....trying to get in the trash cans. A small white tailed doe.....was spotted in the marsh grass near the bike path.... Apparently, we were in the doe's way....since she came on out towards the path.  Maybe it is a Doe Path.....not a bike path....you'll have to ask the doe..... The doe saying good bye......as we continued on.... Our final view....before we loaded the bikes back up and headed home...

On  the north end of Jekyll Island, Georgia, you will find one of only two remaining Georgia pre-revolutionary structures made of tabby.  Originally the house was the residence of Major William Horton, one of General James Oglethorpe's most trusted military aides. Major Horton was the first English resident of Jekyll Island.  His two story home was built on the north end of Jekyll Island along with a barn.  The residents of neighboring Saint Simons Island depended on crops in his fields.  Major Horton cut a road across the north end of Jekyll from his home to the beach which is to this day named Horton Road.  A Georgia historical marker, on the subject of "Tabby," is positioned at the Horton House site explaining the building material used in the original homes.  Used in Georgia during...

After spending the day with clients, my husband and I decided to take a walk on the beach on Jekyll Island.  This is the view from the parking lot of our beaches on Memorial Day weekend........(even on holidays, Jekyll is not crowded.) The birds were feeding along the shore line.. Man with hooks and children on intertubes.....a possible recipe for disaster.......(but we did not witness any disasters)...... Even the pets on the beach were having fun.......(Pets are allowed on the beach after 5:00 each day)...My golden retrievers love it when we take them..... We found a lucky dollar....   My husband and I are still questioning what this is......any suggestions?    Jekyll Island Pier close to sunset....  Kayakers coming in from fishing....  View many other wonderful photos & read informative articles about Jekyll & the surrounding areas including Brunswick, St. Simons & Sea Island, GA by going to  www.jekyllislandhistory.comIt seems an article or letters to the editor concerning the planned new hotels & restaurants specifically on the beach side of Jekyll are a weekly if not daily occurrence in our local newspaper.  The Jekyll Island Authority, it appears, has made some concessions & incentives to a developer who plans to completely rebuild more modern & luxurious hotel options for Jekyll's guests.  Many residents seem to suspect some so called sweetheart deal was made to the developer and that the deluxe hotels contradict the original mission of the State of Georgia to provide a state park that was affordable for the ave...
