Sarasota Embraces Our Differences 2016The 2016 annual exhibit, Embracing Our Diffences, including 45 billboard size images prominently displayed  on the Sarasota bayfront ends today.  Each canvas includes a work of art and a quote from artists and school children from around the world.  My first visit to this annual exhibit years back was one of the reasons I made the decision to move to this vibrant and welcoming city on the Florida Gulf Coast.  Embracing Our Differences' message to me was that Sarasota was a very warm, welcoming place for everyone. As stated on the Embracing Our Differences website, the vision of the organization is as follows: "We envision a world that embraces diversity, respects differences and actively rejects hatred and prejudice." Since moving to Sarsota I hav...

Diversity In Sarasota - Embracing Our Differences 2014.  If you want proof that Sarasota is a diverse, welcoming community look no further that the current display of Embracing Our Differences now showing at Sarasota's Island Park between March 30, 2014 and June 1, 2014. I firsts encountered the Embracing Our Differences exhibit at Sarasota's Island Park several years ago prior to relocating from Orlando, Florida.  It made a significant impression on me, as I'm sure it does to thousands of others, that Sarasota is a city that accepts and embraces diversity. In fact, Embracing Our Differences estimates over 1,600,000 visitors have viewed the exhibit since its inception in 2004. Here is a quote from the Embracing Our Differences website:  "Embracing Our Differences believes that diver...

Painted Pianos Of Sarasota Keys Hit The Streets Of Sarasota!  Six brightly painted spinet pianos played by six professional pianists made their city debut on Friday, January 18, 2014 at Sarasota's downtown Five Points Park at 5pm.  Also in attendance were the seven "Legacy Artists" who converted the pianos into colorful works of art. The pianos will be available for anyone to play outside of six local businesses through the end of May.  The Sarasota Keys Project was initially proposed by former City Commissioner Ken Shelin several years ago, but did not take off until concert pianist Rich Ridenour moved to Sarasota last fall.  Jim Shirley, with the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota, agreed to help bring the project to fruition. Shortly after the concert, the pianos were loaded up...

Mable Ringling Memorial Fountain Restored, Sarasota, FL.  Dismantled and covered over with dirt for 60 years the Mable Ringling Memorial Fountain has been renovated and is once more flowing at the southern gateway to downtown Sarasota. The Mable Ringling Memorial Fountain is located in Luke Wood Park adjacent to the Senior Friendship Center on the north side of US41 just prior to entering downtown Sarasota.  The fountain was built in 1936 by the Sarasota Federation of Garden Circles in honor of Mable Ringling, wife of John Ringling, a key figure in Sarasota history. The fountain began to deteriorate during World War II as funds to maintain it dwindled.  The fountain was filled in and covered over with dirt in the 1950s.  And so it remained until local historian Larry Kelleher of Saras...
