The West Shore Junior/Senior High School Dance team traveled to the University of Central Florida in Orlando this week to attend UDA Dance Camp from Monday to Thursday. The girls stayed in the college dorms. There were 17 teams that attended, compared to just 8 teams last year. The girls practiced each day in the UCF Arena. Dancers were divided into groups and their coaches could place them in 4 different level dances. UDA instructors taught the dancers 3 different dance routines throughout the week. The girls started dancing at 8:30 in the morning and finished at 9:00 PM. After they finished, they returned to their dorms and practiced some more. There were team building exercises and pajama parties, lots of giggling and little sleep. There was some real bonding going on between these g...

Florida's approximately $15 billion, three year take of federal-stimulus spending is already starting to pay off, say agency heads. According to Education Commissioner Eric Smith, the stimulus dollars have helped preserve 26,000 jobs in Florida's K-12 system.  Another 2,700 jobs have been created. Florida is competing for $2.5 billion in high-speed rail grants and waiting to hear whether t will get nearly $50 million in port security grants. $212 million in stimulus dollars have paid for a $25 increase in unemployment compensation benefits. $267 million has extended the length of unemployment benefits. Cynthia Lorenzo, head of the Agency for Workforce Innovation (unemployment), claims that every dollar in spending on unemployment benefits translates into $1.64 in economic impact for a t...

On the first-ever all-pet airline started by Alysa Binder and her husband, Dan Wiesel, dogs and cats will fly in the main cabin of a Suburban Air Freight plane, retooled and lined with carriers in place of seats. I wonder what they serve in the cabin? Peanuts or crackers?  How cool is this?

In 1976 the American public was urgently advised by the government, to take the swine flu vaccine. As admitted during a 60 Minutes interview, the vaccine given was not the vaccine that had been previously tested. The result, thousands of people became sick, many with GBS, Guillian-Barre Syndrome. The 60 Minutes documentary has resurfaced and is well worth watching, especially if you have decided the swine flu shot is for you. For all the hype by various real estate organizations, about striking while the iron is hot, and purchasing a foreclosure, all I can say is unless you have a lot of time on your hands, to wait for an answer from the bank, you might want to rethink your decision.  Banks seem to be dragging their feet on accepting offers, and worse, holding out for higher offers.  So, in who's best interest is it to drag out the purchase process?  Of course it is the banks, although common logic would dictate, unloading those properties should be their number one priority.  If you're looking at foreclosure properties, keep in mind there could be a bidding war, and be prepared to offer more than the bank is asking.  If you don't, you have a long wait, while the bank considers any other offers that may be o...

The Brunswick Harbour Lanes will have 99 cent a game bowling this Sunday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  This is a great way for a family to spend some quality time together. A family of four can bowl 4 games for less than $20.00!  What a great deal!  When they aren't running this particular special, normally, if you arrive on a Sunday morning before 10:00 for bowling, then all the games you play are 99 cents a game.  You really can't beat it. Currently bowling shoe rentals are $3.99 + tax.  That drives the cost of bowling up.  My husband and I already had our own bowling shoes. I went to the local thrift store, and was able to pick up 3 pair of bowling shoes for $1.00 a pair.  Two pairs looked like they had never been worn.     So, head on over to Brunswick Harbour Lanes for 99 cent bowling...

My daughter, Sam Shores broke 4 more World's Records this weekend at the RAW United Powerlifting National Championships held in Melbourne Florida. Thus far she had broken 17 World's Records and she currently holds 12 World's Records. Preparing for the deadlift... Sam deadlifted 252 lbs. Sam benched 92 lbs. Sam squatted 190 lbs. Sam lifted almost four times her body weight in all three lifts combined. So, she walked away with Best Female Weightlifter of the Meet and she pulled in 4 world's records for the meet.  This meet qualifies her to go to the RAW Unity World's Meet in January 2010 in Tampa, Florida.  As a 14 year old powerlifter, Sam is the youngest powerlifter in the world to ever qualify to compete in this meet.  She will be competing with some of the strongest powerlifters in th...

With rainy season here, now is a great time to be sure that the gutters on your house are clean and free of debris. You want to be sure that your gutters are pulling the rain off of your roof, and taking the water out away from your house.  When they are working efficiently they can help prevent flooding issues and unnecessary damage to your home. When your gutters are clogged with leaves and debris they can overflow and become detached from the house.  Often times this causes other issues such as water and wood rot issues in doors, windows, on various sections of the home.  When cleaning your gutters you may use a yard blower to get the excess debris removed or use a regular small garden shovel.  You may be able to use a garden hose to free up the debris in the bottom of the gutters.  ...

When buyers are out looking at homes they always ask how long a house has been on the market. This question can often provide some valuable insight. How motivated is the seller?  How flexible is he on price? Currently there are 981 single family, condos and townhouses for sale in Melbourne Florida in the MLS, Multiple Listing Service.  Over 100 of these properties have been on the market for at least a year and many much longer. Three properties have been on the market for over 1000 days. These 100 properties are stale.  These sellers are in a precarious position. They may appear unwilling to budge, or unmotivated, perhaps unrealistic in the eyes of a buyer.  Perhaps they truly can't budge on their price, based on what they owe on their mortgage. Are the houses continuing to be shown or...

Today, MIMA Orthopedics and Sports Medicine here in Melbourne Florida performed school physicals on students that needed one to be able to play a sport this upcoming year.  MIMA took no money in from these physicals.  A donation of $10 was requested to the sport club of the student's choice at their school. I understand they were performing physicals for 5 area schools, free of charge. Each physical took about 15 minutes from start to finish. They were run like an assembly line, with no snags. On their way out the door, each student was given a free MIMA T shirt. Thank you MIMA for your great generosity in performing hundreds of free physicals today for these student athletes. Did you know honey has uses beyond cooking?  Allow a teaspoon of honey to dissolve in your mouth once a day, and plaque be gone!  The antibacterial properties of honey literally eats away at plaque.  This could potentially save you money at the dentist by avoided the dreaded deep scale cleaning of your teeth. Honey can also be used as a wound dressing.  Apply a small amount of honey to the wound and cover. This Native American solution to traditional antibiotic creams will amaze you as wounds heal twice as fast.  In addition, honey is now being used in the treatment of pressure sores.  So, keep a jar of honey in your medicine cabinet.  You won't be disappointed.

The number of vacant homes due to short sales and foreclosures is increasing in Melbourne, Florida. So, the Melbourne City Council has approved a new registration program for mortgage holders.  The city council believes that this will make it easier to contact the correct party should there be a code compliance complaint at the property.  Some of these abandoned properties are found in disrepair, with lawns that are overgrown. Some have broken windows, algae filled pools, or various other problems. The City council has applied to the Florida Department of Community Affairs. They are hoping for a nearly $2 million grant for a Neighborhood Stabilization Program.  The money will be used to buy and rehabilitate distressed properties.  The properties will then be resold and rented. This arti...

It's time to dust off the 'ole crystal ball and see where the real estate market is headed. Several times a week buyers and sellers ask if the market has hit bottom yet. News reports have indicated that we have hit bottom. People tell me we've hit bottom. Many are convinced that it has.  And, that may be the case in some parts of the country. But, I'm not completely convinced. Have we seen signs that our market has bottomed out?  And if we're at the bottom, how long will we stay there? Or do we still have a ride till we get to the bottom? The locals have homes they want to sell, but they are competing with the short sales and the foreclosures on the market.  So, will these sellers eventually, in time, become among the statistics, a short sale or foreclosure, because they can't sell for...

We have been getting calls from investors that are looking to purchase investment property. They want to take advantage of our low prices and interest rates. Some want to buy a beautiful home in a beautiful neighborhood, with top of the line appliances and amenities. The feeling is that the nicer the property, the better clientele will be attracted to the property, so the more money they will collect in rent, thus the more money they will make. There are many fallacies to real estate investing, and owning the nicest and biggest house on the block is one of them.  Real estate is local in nature. And, each market across the country is different. So, I can only speak about and from my experience with Brevard County Florida real estate. Real estate investing is all about the numbers. If the...
