Mixed Greens - Southern Style! You think of mixed greens  and a mix of fresh salad greens comes to mind, right? Not so when you live in the South!  Here, any leafy vegetables that are cooked are referred to as "greens".   These mixed greens happened to be mustard and collards.  They have a rich taste and go well with pork and cornbread.      My mother-in-law used to cook collards, kale, mustard, and turnip greens.  A combination of two or three various greens then makes "mixed greens".  There's always a piece of ham hock or other smoked meat cooked with the greens.   My mother-in-law also used her "special seasoning" - bacon drippings, something I didn't realize she put into the pot until much later when I was already hooked on her greens! Mixed Greens - Southern Style!

Strawberry season in Florida begins when in most other states the ground is either still frozen or covered by snow. However now, nearing the end of May, our strawberry season is also nearing it's end.  For a few more days, the U-Pick farms around Hernando County still offer the opportunity to pick your own strawberries fresh from the field. This weekend, we went out to JG Ranch in Brooksville, Florida, and joined a dozen or so other patrons picking a few pounds of strawberries. JG Ranch is located of Wiscon Road and they also offer seasonal fruit and vegetables such as Blueberries, tomatoes, beans, corn, and pretty soon a new variety of colored peppers. There is nothing better than fresh produce and it's fun to be able to pick your own!     Pick Your Own Strawberries in Hernando County,...
