Hernando County Courthouse - An Old Beauty in Brooksville, FL The Old Hernando County Courthouse located in town of Brooksville is one of the prettiest buildings I have seen. At one point, in 1843, a proposal went out to name the county Amaxura (Spanish for Withlacoochee). The bill was amended to call the area Hernando.   Photos by Toni Weidman, Re/Max New Dimensions   In 1844, the name was changed to Benton county after Missouri Sen. Thomas Hart Benton.
