Another Two Months of Transplanting Time if Your Green Thumb is Itching! -   but better to get it done now, while it's cool!  (Ha Ha!)    We have had such heat this year, already, - I wonder if anytime is good this year!    We have had a lot of heat in Wilton, CT this year so far - don't transplant in the heat!   The only thing that is bad about transplanting in the heat, is you need to mulch well to protect the roots, and water almost twice a day, especially in Wilton, CT.    Your newly cut (you do cut them when you dig them out) roots need to stay very moist for at least two months, and a little moist for the rest of the growing season.     If you are not prepared to water once or twice daily, please do not move a plant!   Now that I have gotten that out of the way, we can move on to ...

My Most Prized Flowers Are Ready to Bloom!   They are so ready to pop open with the most beautiful colors! The most prized flowers are my Solidarity Rhododendron.     I originally planted them where I thought that they could stay for at least 10 years.  These bushes were so happy and healthy, that I had to transplant them two years ago to a wide open area where they could flourish for another ten years. Enjoy these fabulous blooms.  I will be cutting them and arranging them for the dinner tables for the Survivors' Dinner at the Relay For Life here in Wilton on May 14th.  When dinner is over, the survivors and their companions will be taking them home to enjoy.   I always have to make sure that I bring enough to go around for everyone..      That is my way of sharing this incredible beau...

First Impressions Start Outside the Home with Curb Appeal!             is the first thing that I do remind a seller about.   When buyers approach a home, they will form an immediate opinion about it.   If the "curb appeal" has been maximized, they will definitely want to move forward to seeing the inside.    The curb appeal, unfortunately, begins down the street.  It actually begins as the buyers approach the town.   They will have made the decision as to whether the town is appropriate for them before they ask to see any homes.   Then, the buyers may even screen out certain areas of the town, through several methods.   One would be by driving through parts of the town.  Another method might be speaking with friends or family who may know of the town.   And perhaps the buyers may look a...

What Was The Name of the Flower?   Here it is!!! It is almost done now,  - and actually, I don't know where my brain was, as so many of you were really close,  ----  but still, not right!  It is the Allegheny Plum Cherry - Davidisii variety.  We have many here in Wilton, CT It is an Allegheny Plum Cherry, properly known as Prunus Alleghaniensis, but mine has a rhododendron mixed in from behind it.   The shrub is found in northeastern US, is a large deciduous shrub that grows approximately 12 feet at the most.   It has dark gray-brown bark and leaves around 3 inches long with hairy undersides.    The flowers, small, are white, followed by small, yellow-fleshed, purple-blue fruit (I have never seen this - but have not looked!)    I just know that I enjoy its flowers in the spring here in ...

These are My Favorite Surprises of the Spring... Almond Bushes ....  I'm sure that there is some more proper name for them, and I don't see them around very often, but they are a real treat in the spring for me!   I love the way the lowers turn from a deep red in the bud stage, and gradually go to almost white when fully open.   The combination of all of the colors as they open on a branch, is simply stupendous!     If I was a good photographer, I could have a lot of fun with the flowers in my garden during the spring and summer....    These bushes are so much fun to watch as they come into their own during the spring - little by little, they never cease to amaze me with their beauty.    The flowers remind me of little pink cotton balls, all stuffed onto a branch - so pretty ....  These...

It appears for only a short time, then - poof it's gone .....   But, it always makes me very happy when it appears!   It's so pretty! What Flower is it?  Make a Good Guess ....

You Never Get a Second Chance! How often have you driven to a home that the buyers had at the top of their "to buy" list, and found them screaming at you to drive on!   We're not interested!     Sellers beware - the first impression and first glance may be the last.    Most buyers won't say, "Well, we could move the walk, treat the weeds, prune the bushes, paint the house and it will be a great place!   Usually if the outside is a mess, the buyers know that the inside will definitely overwhelm them.   Before you place your home on the market, take the time to prune your bushes, clean up your lawn, and put some paint on the house.    Then, you might get a few buyers in the front door.   Or, at least to the front door.    Stand at the street, and look at your place with a set of strangers...

Wilton Hunt Community in Wilton, CT      is a beautiful planned development community in Wilton, Ct.   The homes are lovely, reasonable in size, and easy living.  The exterior landscaping is done for you, mowing, trimming, and plowing....     All of the homes in this planned community are easy to live in.  Their plan is open and spacious, and since the homes were built recently, everything is fairly up to date.   Loads of open space comes with the community, so everyone can enjoy walks in the woods, nature in the back yard, etc. The street is nicely designed to flow through curving around from home to home, with a cul-de-sac at the end.  The access to all of the modern niceties is right there, around the corner, or a short distance away.  What a wonderful find for a young or older coupl...

Is this Perfection??        When you look closely, you can see every detail, in total symmetry.   The details and size are also in symmetry.    Nature is the biggest thrill on the earth!!    The closer you look, and the more often you look, the more that you marvel at how nature pulls it off! If you look really closely, you will see that even the interior of the flower is in complete symmetry.     It never ceases to amaze me, how again and again, nature just comes up in total perfection!

What Do We Do With Our Books in Wilton, CT?  as we are all devouring books on a daily basis.     Out of the closets and overflowing bookshelves come hundreds of books - every household has too many!    We all tend to save the best books, hoping that we will have a best friend to pass them on to.    Then they sit in a corner, gathering dust, while we wait until we see that friend again.   Then what? Fridays in the Garden are a very relaxing way to end the week.  Our weekends are crazy enough, there should always be a day to relax and enjoy the beauty around us.   Wilton is a suburban town that has two acre zoning, so there is lots of woods and gardens to enjoy....  loads of beauty!     We had rain last night in Wilton, so it was fun to try to go out and catch the droplets still on the plants, and beautiful to catch them on the flowers themselves.         Golly, I think spring in Wilton, CT, or wherever you are, is simply wonderful!    To be able to witness the rebirth of all of these plants that have been lying dormant for so long, is truly amazing!      Fridays in the Garden are a very rewarding time, even if it's just to sit and look....

We Were Dry, ...   Now We're Not!    First Liquor Store Opens in Wilton, CT!!!  This is such an exciting time for Wilton.  We have been a dry town for as long as I have known.   We bought our first home in Wilton in 1973, and it was a dry town then.  One had to drive to Ridgefield, Georgetown, Norwalk, New Canaan, or Westport to pick up a bottle of wine.    No one minded, and the vote continued to be a huge "NO"  every time it came up in a town wide vote.      The reasoning behind the huge "NO" by the residents of Wilton was they wanted to make it more difficult for the youth to purchase the liquor.  Wilton residents also kept the few restaurants that were here from acquiring liquor licenses to serve beer and wine, since they did not want rowdy drinking outsiders driving through town.  ...

The Wilton Arms in Wilton, CT  is the oldest rental apartment building in Wilton.    When the soldiers came home from the war after World War II, the town needed a place to house all of these young men and women coming home.    It has been said that Wilton answered the need with a fabulously enormous building.  It sat atop a hill in town, overlooking the town center.   A beautiful, large white apartment building was built for all of the returning men and women and their spouses to call home.   Today, it is still an apartment building, and rooms are still for rent there.  The Wilton Community Nursery School is located next door to it, the Post Office is on the other side, and Center School (now an office building) is across the way.   Hubbard Road runs through that now.  All of that area...
