Survivors Dinner - Relay For Life -Wilton CT 2011   A HUGE success!!!    We had approximately 60 folks there - lots and lots of wonderful gifts given by the merchants in town - and food galore, also donated by the merchants in town.  The singing group, Acoustic Wilton, performed, and they were phenonemal!  Amy Jonsson, Patty Perry, Joannie Wallace, and Dave Keefe. As an added bonus for me, Morgan Denslow sang most beautifully - accompanied by the Accoustic Wilton group - to a captivated audience of Survivors.   Morgan was herself a caregiver extraordinaire and was an Honoree Chair along with Mike Francia, an eight year survivor.    Survivors Dinner - Relay For Life -Wilton CT 2011

Relay For Life  -Survivors Dinner - in Wilton CT 2011   Relay For Life is being held tomorrow, May 13th, at the Wilton High School track.   A lot of folks have spent hundreds of hours volunteering and giving so much time to make sure this event is a special  one. The most special part of it for me is the Survivors Dinner, held under a special tent from 5-7.   All survivors are welcomed to register from 3 pm onward, and we will have folks there to help make it a special time to be had by all.  There will be special music, food donated by the food merchants in town, a gift for each survivor to take home at the end of the evening, and best of all, there will be bonding and outreach for those who have survived.  The Survivors Dinner at the Relay For Life has always been a time to celebrate ...

Vegetable Gardening in Fairfield County CT. There is something about getting ones hands in the soil that is as positively regenerating to the soul. Perhaps there is some kind of genetic imprinting deep within the sub conscious mind of ours that yearns to return to out agrarian roots.Years ago, I recall my maternal grandfather would lay flat on the ground in the backyard, saying he was recharging by drawing up the energy of the earth. I was pretty sure his back just hurt from playing "tick-toc" with his five grandchildren. I think we wore the poor old guy out. But now looking back on that image, perhaps there was something more to it than him just napping on the lawn.Today I took an audaciously bold leap of faith and planted the vegetable garden. I have consulted the oracles and am told ...

Azaleas in Wilton CT The azaleas are ready to explode around here in CT.    Mine by my living room window are a huge bank of the most gorgeous pink mature bushes that will melt into each other.   The landscaping fellows always want to prune them a lot, and there is no way that will happen!  I don't use anyone because of that ... Wilton CT Photo Blogger Rhododendrons are a very hardy group of evergreen shrubs.   A very large group, comprising over 900 species and thousands of cultivars, they are among the most popular garden shrubs.   With the right selection, they can be grown from Georgia to Maine.   They are found used for just about every type of landscaping purpose,  from huge groupings, naturalized settings, to foundation plantings.   A single rhododendron isolated in a landscape looks out of place and lonely.    The most important factor in selecting a rhododendron for your property is to choose a type that will tolerate your soil acidity, temperatures, supply of water and organic matter, and your winter temperatures.   Their ideal spot is in a semi shady area with cool moist soil and somewhat protected i...

LEED building brings AWARENESS.     I was lucky enough to be included on a tour organized by Southwestern Connecticut Green Building Council (SCTGBC) on the first commercial building in Fairfield County, Ct.  to achieve Gold LEED Core & Shell certification. The Class A 150,000 square feet office space was completed in the summer of 2008. The owners and developers Davis Marcus Partners of 40 Danbury Road  in Wilton realized back in 2005 that sustainable design would work for this 33 acre parcel that was previously a corporate headquarters and huge parking lot adjacent to other commercial buildings. The new concept was to create a campus linking the two existing building with a natural wooded park and picnic area created between the buildings. A structured parking garage was built on a sm...

It RAINED at the Wilton Starbucks last week! Dave Popoff and I finally met at the Wilton Starbucks last week.    He was a few minutes late, and I finally decided to wait outside and watch for him.   At one point, as it was cold, I decided to sit in my car and send a text to a client.   That had to be when he snuck in.  I finally wandered in again to double check, and there he was! We had a great meeting, talked about a lot of things, and found out a lot about each other.   Dave Popoff is definitely very aware of all "green" activities in the area, and all building methods and materials.  He has been involved in green building for many many years.   That was extremely interesting to me.    A fabulous knowledge base.    I know that if I have any questions about his area, I will feel very ...

Meet James Quarello - Inspector - in Wilton CT 06897! at my clients' inspection! A week ago, my clients needed to schedule an inspection here in Wilton on a condo/ single family home they had an accepted offer on.   I recommended several inspectors, then stopped them, and said, " Try James Quarello- I have read so much about him, and heard so many great stories about his work - I think he's the man for you!" James Quarello and I have gotten to know each other on Active Rain - through our blogging efforts, and a few phone conversations, - and we feel that we know each other pretty well. The clients called James Quarello, and he was simply fabulous!    Not only does he do a very detailed and lengthy report and inspection of every inch of the place, but he also was so clear in his explanat...

Help preparing homes for sale in Fairfield County CT. I feel it important to let the ActiveRain community know what it is we do at Turning Point Estate Services, LLC. We are listed as "Real Estate-Other" so it may not be immediately obvious. At first I was not sure I should be a part of a real estate network group. But, after I met with Dagny Eason a local Realtor and AR member,  I was convinced we are indeed an interrelated part of the real estate community. We were founded to provide help to executors, trustees and family members faced with closing down an estate and disbursing the personal property items...estate clean outs. Hence the name Turning Point Estate Services. We are also great at situations where a person must be moved to assisted living and the home must be sold to financ...

Panel Discussion at Active Rain Camp in Atlantic City NJincluded Dagny Eason from Wilton, CT, J Philip Farana from Briarcliff, NY, and Gerry Michaels from Gettysburg, PA.  Kerrie Greenhaulgh ran the questions and helped guide the casual commentary about blogging and its benefits.   The panel was created by Active Rain to include Realtors who had been on Active Rain for several years, and who had opened their own brokerages recently.   Some of the questions were asking about topics for blogging, results from blogging, some interesting stories and sales from blogging.  Dagny, Gerry and J Philip all were in agreement that a huge percentage of their income comes as a result of their blogging efforts over the last few years. If interested in real estate or information about Rain Camp, please ...

Sitting here on the couch as my husband does the dinner dishes.  I have a 4 foot long heating pad that is attempting to warm the knots out of muscles that I never knew that I had. I was a long distance runner in my younger days.  I know what it feels like to go out and run 6 , 7 miles and have trouble walking for a few days.  I now walk 3 to 4 miles a day but never in my life have I been asked to do the kind of stuff this tiny little yogi woman asked me to do. Yeah I am competative.  I refused to admit that I can't get my head on my brand new yoga mat while I am in the pigeon pose.  Who the heck named it that?  Okay maybe a cabby after they ran over the pigeon.  Take your left leg and bend it under you so that it sticks out your right side then strectch out your right leg until it is to...

How can we solve the water problems after the rains?   The 2011 winter in the Northeast was fraught with ice dams and leaky ceilings.  We now have heavy rains and warmer temperatures sending water into our basements and floating homes “down the river” figuratively and literally.   Depending on where you are located, your homes are literally floating away, or at the least, filling up with muddy waters.   The big box stores are stocking their shelves with sand bags on pallets, and will not have enough to help with the latest onslaught that will come tomorrow.    If you are lucky enough to live on high ground, you still may have a very high water table.  For some reason, the water table is not related to low or high ground.   The pressure on all of the basements in New England and south ov...
