View Naugatuck, CT in a larger map Well, you live in Waterbury, pay taxes in Waterbury, and you work in…. Naugatuck. Maybe you’ve just started working in the area, or perhaps you’ve been a constant presence on your job for the past 10, 15, maybe even 20 years or longer. Depending on where you currently live in Waterbury, a move to Naugatuck just might make sense because   The taxes are lower. Compare a tax mill rate of 31.52 vs. 39.92 for the two areas. Avoiding that annoying rush-hour traffic and shortening the time it takes to get back and forth to work. Need I say any more? If you happen to work beyond Naugatuck, especially in any of the Valley towns (Ansonia, Derby, Shelton, Oxford, Seymour), then #2 becomes doubly important, especially during those terrible winter months. A better ...

View Prospect, CT in a larger map Well, you live in Waterbury, pay taxes in Waterbury, and you work in…. Prospect. No – what I’ve found to be true is the reverse (as it may be for many of the surrounding towns): some people may work in Waterbury, but live in Prospect, or have jobs outside of the area. Now, since that reason has been eliminated - the whole necessity of living where you work - what might induce a Waterbury resident to move to Prospect??? The taxes are lower. Compare a tax mill rate of 24.5 vs. 39.92 for the two areas. Not to mention that relatively similar houses in both towns are worth much more in Prospect. The school district is better. Prospect, along with the neighboring town of Beacon Falls, comprises the Region 16 School District. Visit the School District Region 1...

Well, this is what I get for a little hubris on my part L   February 4 was a late opening for school, so I got out of my house at 8:20 and headed to work. It was only a five minute drive. I saw the cop car sitting on the opposite side of the road with no one in it and thought “who got in trouble now?”   I definitely didn’t think it would be me .   I stopped at the stop sign momentarily – it was still icy out and I couldn’t see oncoming traffic at that intersection where the stop sign was - and I stopped again momentarily to verify that there was no traffic coming from my right. I then headed down the hill towards the intersection…   Where the light had just turned yellow! I eased on through it right as it was about to turn red…   Only then did I notice the police cruiser barreling towar...

Well, as we all know, school is about to end for thousands of our children and of course we are making preparations for graduation, summer camps, vacations, and various other summer activities as we enter into June. Here are some important events that will be occurring prior to the school year's official end that you might not want to miss:   On Saturday, June 6, 2009, the American Cancer Society will be having its annual Relay for Life at Crosby High School , located at 300 Pierpont Road in the city’s East End. Many teams from schools across the city, as well as volunteer organizations will be there to raise money to support cancer research and those who have fought the disease and won, as well as to remember those who lost their battle with cancer. From lifelong Waterbury residents, who know both the good, bad and ugly of our fair city, the most important things anyone wanting to know what Waterbury has to offer should know: 1. The blending of some great demographics (a beautiful blending of so many cultures). Irish, Italians, Jamaicans, Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, African-Americans, Albanians, French, Portuguese – and countless others that can be found here. 2. The historical significance of the “Green” 3. The beautiful parks that the public can use for free. Fulton, Hamilton, Bucks Hill, Chase, Murray, Lakewood, Schofield, Waterville, Hopeville, Washington - and many others. Along the Banks of the Naugatuck River - Anyone familiar with Waterbury and its history knows that many of the old factories that powered Waterbury's dominance of the region were located near the Naugatuck River, which somewhat divides the city almost in half. Waterbury's more affluent neighborhoods (Bunker Hill, Town Plot, Robinwood, West Side and Country Club) all lie west of the Naugatuck River. Route 8 neatly runs parallel to the Naugatuck River through town on the same side, crossing it once in the South End. Most of the railroad tracks lay in shambles and piles of rubbish lie along the middle and northern stretches of the Naugatuck River by Thomaston Avenue. However, as the Naugatucl River flows through the center of Waterbury and approaches Naugatuck, a rather startling transform...

In this day and age, one can always look up information about a place on the Internet. Looking up interesting facts about local demographics, school data, crime rates, etc. can be pretty tedious, and oftentimes one can make a decision about moving to a place based upon that data alone. Of course, negative publicity about an area will always have an impact on it. That's a given. Whoa! Hold on a second, will ya? I know, I know - Waterbury has indeed gotten its share of bad press, but that's no reason to run screaming from it. Indeed, there are many wonderful things about the city of Waterbury that I can't begin to describe. Who can better give you a sense of what it's like to live here but someone who actually does, and has most of their life? Seriously, a first-hand perspective from a r...
