Kent Falls State Park, Kent, CT  We don't normally post about things outside of Newtown, but Kent Falls State Park is so special, we just couldn't resist. Yesterday, while on the way back from looking a foreclosure property in Falls Village, we stopped at Kent Falls State Park.  It'd been awhile since we'd been there and we'd forgotten how special it is.  Kent Falls State Park is nestled in the northern end of Kent, CT, just below Cornwall on Route 7.  Kent Falls State Park is approximately 40 minutes north of Newtown. When you arrive to the park, you see a small wooden sign at the entrance and then you pass the guard booth on the way into the parking lot.  The covered bridge over the stream brings you to the walkway that leads directly to the lower part of the falls.  There are numerou...

Are homes selling in Kent, CT? The real estate market is admittedly slow in Kent, although not surprising in this current real estate market. It is a buyers market in Kent, with the current listings compared to the sales, it will take 21.5 months to sell the current homes that are for sale. This is called the market absorption rate. (A sellers market is anything under 6 months, 6 months is a balanced market, and over 6 months is a buyers market.) Currently in Kent, CT there are 43 active single family homes for sale. One of these homes is "under deposit", not yet under contract. Typically this period of time can take from 2-4 weeks before it moves from under deposit to pending sale. The buyer is doing inspections and the sellers attorney is drawing up the contract, or checking over the ...

Kent CT real estate in Litchfield County, what's selling, what's for sale and what does it all mean? As a buyer looking to purchase property in Kent, CT it could be a great deal for you. A few factors come into play. First and foremost, it is a buyers market. Currently there are 52 active listings. It will take 13 months to sell that inventory, which is called the absorption rate. Anything over 6 months indicates a buyers market, 6 months is considered to be a balanced market, and below that is a sellers market. As long as the seller understands this, you should be able to negotiate a good deal for yourself. List to sale ratio. 4 homes sold in August of 2011 in Kent, CT with an average list to sale price of 81.69%. For a buyer, that is good news, I would be keeping that in the back of m...

Here is a small segment of a fascinating article by Andrew Schneider Senior Public Health Correspondent...  Americans living in millions of homes will soon crawl into their attics to collect their holiday decorations. But with those colorful lights and ornaments could come invisible and deadly asbestos fibers that decades from now may destroy or end the lives of some of the celebrants. For years the government has known that the attics and walls of as many as 35 million homes and businesses are insulated with Zonolite, which contains lethal asbestos-tainted vermiculite.  Some medical authorities believe that people are still dying because of it. More than 400 deaths have been attributed to exposure to vermiculite in the community in which it was mined, and a litany of solid scientific s...

And so it begins, the symphony of colors splashing across the Litchfield County, Connecticut countryside against the backdrop of our ever changing skies. Fall is my most favorite time of year, the cooler days, the crisp evenings and of course the eye candy in every direction as the leaves begin their "Dance of Fall" right before my very eyes. It is impossible for one to remain unaffected by the awesome work of nature, the spectacular vistas that we live in the middle of. The leaves have begun their dance, you can see the green giving way to hints of color here and there, anticipation mounts with each passing day. Is it peak? Is it time? Will today be the day that I drive down the road and see that fantastic sugar maple has decided to burst forth in the most amazing colors possible. It i...

Last week was mixed for U.S. Treasuries.  A combination of friendly economic reports, lingering questions about the global economy and mixed messages regarding Spain's financial situation kept buying in government debt steady to strong. But there were a few bumps.  On Monday a big rise in the euro took its toll on Treasuries. On Tuesday the NY Empire State index of June manufacturing conditions rose to 19.57 from 19.11, but analysts expected 20.  Separately, the sentiment survey of residential homebuilders in June fell to 17 from 22 -- the lowest since March.  These reports should have helped Treasuries, but a massive rally on Wall Street due to the increase in the euro left Treasuries in the dust. Treasuries turned it around on Wednesday.  It began with a huge drop in May housing start...

By Sheree R Curry Would you buy serial killer Joel Rifkin's former home, where several of his victims were slain? What about the Amityville Horror house? Both homes are currently up for sale, and the idea of living in either one makes many buyers squirm and decide to look elsewhere. Most buyers would also probably want to know that the house pictured to the left was built on the same suburban Chicago lot as the home where notorious murderer John Wayne Gacy buried 29 of his victims in the walls and crawl spaces. Murder aside, quite a few buyers would also opt out of a home where someone died from disease, natural causes or suicide. If the idea of living in such a home churns your stomach, do you know for certain that no one has died in the home or apartment you're currently living in? The...

Kent, Connecticut, living and playing in beautiful Kent, CT. I love to go to Kent, CT. Take a drive up Route 7 North from New Milford, it will take you right into the heart of Kent, CT. Nestled in the scenic foothills of the Berkshires, Kent, CT is a place you shouldn't miss! But first, don't forget to stop and check out the covered bridge over the Housatonic River at Bulls Bridge. Stop and take a bit of a stroll through the paths above the Housatonic River or just sit and enjoy the view! And if you are hungry, try one of my favorite restaurants in the area, Bulls Bridge Inn. (My favorite meal is to ask for their crab cake appetizers as an entree, and hit their salad bar, the best I have ever had!) Downtown Kent, CT is wonderful. Filled with boutique shops, you will find that special on...

Always on the lookout ...Hope you find this as interesting as I did... Have a great weekend! Lesley Common foods that are destroying the world's forests, from the precious Amazon to coastline-protecting mangroves. By Rachel Cernansky We hear a lot about the importance of eating organic and eating local, but left out of the conversation are the growing methods of some of our staple foods, and how much forest land has been lost to grow (or raise) products like beef, rice, and palm oil-the latter of which is in more foods than you might realize. When agricultural land becomes unproductive (usually after about three years), it is often cheaper to clear new land than to fertilize it or replenish nutrients that were drained from the soil. Monocrop agriculture is a major factor in how modern ...

Health effects from indoor air pollutants may be experienced soon after exposure or, possibly, years later. Immediate effects may show up after a single exposure or repeated exposures. These include irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat, headaches, dizziness, and fatigue. Such immediate effects are usually short-term and treatable. Sometimes the treatment is simply eliminating the person's exposure to the source of the pollution, if it can be identified. Symptoms of some diseases, including asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, and humidifier fever, may also show up soon after exposure to some indoor air pollutants. The likelihood of immediate reactions to indoor air pollutants depends on several factors. Age and preexisting medical conditions are two important influences.  In othe...
