Every two years in Cheshire, Connecticut, we have an event that is just as anticipated as the annual Fall Festival, the Memorial Day Parade, and the first day of school (well at  least by mothers).  It is the curbside Bulky Waste and Scrap Metal Collection. However, this year, the Public Works Department advises all Cheshire residents that there will be NO Curbside Bulky Waste or Scrap Metal Collection.  I find this quite sad, as it is a wonderful recycling program.  I would estimate that 90% of the items that make it to the curb DO NOT make it to the actual official pickup.  There is a parade through town of people looking for items that can be reused.  A grill will disappear in stages--the first part to go (almost immediately) is the cast metal casing, and then the rest slowly disappe...

Driving along Route 10 in Cheshire lately, you may have noticed that some signs have gone up that are covered in black plastic.  Of course the curious have begun to tear off the plastic to see what is coming!  Here is the lowdown: Country Club Road Bridge will be closed for repair beginning on Tuesday, September 7, at 7:00 A.M.  The bridge is located on Country Club Road, between Round Hill Road and Wolf Hill Road (you know, the bridge that has been just one lane for the past few months!).  It will be closed to vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians.  The Town of Cheshire anticipates that the bridge will re-open by Friday, December 17. Country Club Road from Wolf Hill Road will be restricted to homeowners residing on Country Club Road, and this portion of the road will not be open to thro...

Today here in Connecticut, (and most of New England) we are expected to have record high temperatures. The air already feels like Pea Soup with the Humidity and with temperatures hitting 100 degrees, I thought I would post a list of things to do, or places to go, to cool off. 1.Head to the local library. If you have kids the local library could be a quick and easy (and inexpensive) retreat. The Prospect library for one has a great children's play area, Free Internet access, all the newest books and even DVD's. Plus the A/C is REALLY cold in there.   2.If you want to head out into your yard, find a nice shady spot, bring a big jug of a frosty beverage, and set up a sprinkler. It will do the grass and you a lot of good! Be sure to save your yard work for another day. 3.If you are in the P...

The Town of Cheshire can trace it's roots indirectly from the town of New Haven by way of Wallingford, 2 generations removed. Today it is still a home to many people who commute daily to the new Haven area for work. Originally founded as the West Farm area of Wallingford, if got it's official name of Cheshire from a the Brooks family who emigrated here from Cheshire in England. The early settlers were not only farmers but also were extensively into the mining of copper and barium sulfite, which was used extensively in the production of glass, paint and cloth. The first manufacturing company to start up in Cheshire, was aptly called the Cheshire Mfg Co, which produced ivory combs and buttons. Part of the original company, which was called the Ball & Socket Co, has been merged with the W...

Cheshire High School Rams Claims LL Title, wins CT state football championship! The CHS Rams had a dramatic 28-21 overtime victory over Staples in the Class LL state Championship game Sunday afternoon. Its overtime, the score is 21-21 and everyone is extremely tense. Then out of nowhere, a CHS defensive lineman stripped the ball from Staples, recovered the fumble himself and ran in for the touchdown. This was the seventh championship for Cheshire, but it’s first since 1997. I am very proud of the CHS football team and I congratulate them on their success! I am sure that the troops in Afghanistan are celebrating.

You have a pretty good chance of winning when you have a 70 ton U.S. Abrams M-1 tank supporting you. The Cheshire High School football team will be playing for the state title against Staples - Westport team .  The game was postponed due to the weather and will be played today, Sunday December 6th at 2:00pm at West Haven's Ken Strong Stadium. The team has the support of our troops in Afghanistan. They are very excited to play the game but they are also excited because they have a lot of support from our troops in Afghanistan. A car magnet of the CHS football team was placed on a tank located in Afghanistan.  The magnet was sent by a Cheshire resident to a soldier friend.  When he heard Cheshire was in the state championship, he placed it on a tank and took these pictures.  His entire ...

There are many reasons to buy now and not wait and play the market game.   Home values are stabilizing somewhat and interest rates are still at an all time low but predictions are they will be at 7% by 2009. Location, Location, Location is key to buying your home and Central Connecticut is a great location an hour away from New York City (go in for a day of fun or visit with family and friends) train station is 20 minutes away.  Central Connecticut is located close to several major airports, 1 hour to JFK, 45-50 minutes to Bradley International Airport, not to mention 20 minutes to Tweed New Haven Airport.  Need to travel?? Living in Central Connecticut can get you there.  The proximatity of Central Connecticut is unbelievable, I've mentioned New York, but what about an hour ride to the...

I am optimistic for  Successful 2008 Real Estate Market in Cheshire, CT.  As of today January 12th there are only 112 active single family homes listed on our MLS for Cheshire.  There are also 13 that have deposits.  Since inventory is down it is a great time to list.  It is still very important to practice intelligent pricing since the average days on market of the other 112 listings is almost 3 months.  Another interesting thing is the average list price of a home in Cheshire is $497,000.  The most active market in Cheshire has consistently been the $375,000 - $425,000 segment.  As always it is possible to search the entire MLS for CT from our website. http://www.davejonesrealtor.com/  We also added a direct MLS search registration page at http://www.searchallctlistings.com/David Jone...

This morning I woke with the letter "S" on my mind and SAFETY has been in my thoughts all week.  Monday a horrific crime was committed in Cheshire, Connecticut.  Two career criminals that were recently paroled spotted a Mother & Daughter in the local super market Sunday night and stalked them.  Reports do not mention any contact that evening but they followed the pair and found out where they lived.  Seems they returned to the area in the middle of the night, left their car over a mile away and walked to the home.Cheshire is typical of many surrounding towns where crime is never given much thought.  Many people leave their homes unlocked and enjoy the peaceful tranquillity of suburban life.  At 3:00am the criminals entered through a basement door and terrorized the family for hours.  Th...
