It's been a while since I've been active on Active Rain, and that's because last October, I "retired."  However, my first love, real estate, kept calling.  So, after 4 years in the mortgage business and 9 months of retirement, I reactivated my real estate license this month and joined Coldwell Banker Distinctive Properties.  I am so excited to be back!  Don't get me wrong, retirement was fun.  I've never been bored with time off.  It was great having no agenda, no commitments, and just, basically, leading a life by stream-of-consciousness, jumping from one activity or project to another as the thought and notion crossed my mind.   I dabbled in e-commerce, stock trading, followed cryptocurrency trends and invested a bit to learn more about it.  I played music, hiked, camped, traveled, wo...

Ridgway, CO Gateway to the San Juan Mountains and the Grammy AwardsMost people probably never thought about where the Grammy Awards are made, or they just assume there's a large factory that manufactures the trophies. In actuality the awards are handmade in a small mountain town in Southwest Colorado called Ridgway. John Billings is known around these parts as "The Grammy Man". He is the owner of Billings Artworks.Billings was once the apprentice for the original Grammy trophy maker, Bob Graves. He began making the original award in 1958. The relationship between Billings and Graves started in 1976 while both men lived in California. Realizing Billings artistic talent and attention to detail, Graves decided to teach him what he knew. Around 1983 Graves died, and Billings bought the busi...

That's The Worst Fish Picture I've Ever Seen...Fishing Western Colorado. Ouch that hurts. Normally I take pretty decent pictures, but not this time. The fishing was great today, so I guess my camera skills were a bit off. OK...here's the picture in question. The one my husband is complaining about. This is a Snake River Fine Spot Cutthroat Trout. It was caught at Pa-Co-Chu-Puk between Ridgway and Montrose, Colorado. This one is 20 inches long and that's great for this type of trout. My husband out fished me today and the credit for this catch goes to him. The fisherman upstream came over to help Dan net it. So we had three people standing over the fish. After the long hard fight, we were all eager to get the fish back to the water, and not make it pose for a picture.     Pa-Co-Chu-Puk i...

Fishing Pa-Co-Chu-Puk Ridgway State Park...Great River Fishing Experience. When traveling through this area of Western Colorado, Ridgway Reservoir really stands out, but a great stretch of water is often overlooked on the Uncompahgre River below the dam. Pa-Co-Chu-Puk is an Indian term meaning Cow Creek. This is one of three areas that make up Ridgway State Park. The locals just called this area "Paco". This is a trout stream that is a lot of fun without a lot of work. Wading is easy, but there's also good fishing from the bank. Here you will catch rainbow and cutthroat trout. This stretch of river is catch and release with flies and lures only. If you are looking to do a little fishing ( or a lot ) on your Western Colorado trip, Paco is a place that should be on your list. Paco isn't o...

Get Lost at Ridgway CO State Park...Mountain Views and So Much More. Ridgway State Park sits at the base of the San Juan Mountains and this means the park has some of the most fantastic scenery around. Ridgway Reservoir alone covers over 1,000 acres. The park stretches for about five miles into the Uncompahgre River Valley. The reservoir was designed to catch spring water and runoff snow melt from the mountains as part of the Colorado River Storage Project. The reservoir dam was finished in 1987 and this is when a lot of land was eventually covered by water. This valley and surrounding area is also where the John Wayne movie True Grit was filmed.   The park has three areas. There's Dutch Charlie, which was the first area of the park to open in 1989. Camping, boat ramps and the beach are...

I was recently visiting with a friend on the phone and was lovingly encouraged to post more oftern :) I had to agree. There are many times when I think, "Oh, that would be good to write about." Or, "My readers would probably like to know that." Then of course I see a bird flying by and the thought is gone and never to return. The other thing we can't forget is the pace at which Ridgway life moves. It is, well let's say, slower. That is one of the major reasons why folks around the world are drawn to our little corner. So I could argure that I want that to be reflected in my lifestyle post frequency as well. Probably just an excuse, but hey, a good one...right? On to the hot topic of this post. MOUNTAIN MARKET IS EXPANDING!! That is so darn cool that I just can't express it in words. One...

Each fall our little town of Ridgway is blessed with the presence of these majestic travelers. The word is that these guys come down all the way from Alaska. Last week I spotted my first eagle taking a dive from his tree top pirch, into the cold waters of the Uncompahgre River. The river is teaming with another late fall traveler...salmon. We know when the salmon show up the bald eagle's are soon to follow. Depending on the year, there can be around a dozen in the corridor of the Ridgway River Trail System. The trail system is a concrete walking path that leads from the Ridgway Town Park, all the way to the Ridgway Reservoir. Half way down is the new Dennis Weaver Memorial Park. The memorial park has a massive bald eagle monument at its heart. This river walk is absolutley incredible. ...

It's that time again already! In the past my wife and I have been casual observers, but this year we are going to get right into the mix. We have a ton of stuff in our garage, that is not a home for the cars as of right now.    We intend to remedy that in a few weeks. Whatever doesn't sell at the lot sale, goes to charity. The ROCC and Lupitasale is such a great example of life in Ridgway. People come from all over the region to rummage through everything from a used boat, to the smallest trinket known to man. You see everyone you know there. It can get hard to shop due to all the chatting that tends to happen. Then of course their is always that one or two items that you find you can't live without. All in all, it's a wonderful day and I look forward to getting out there with the other...

Last night, watching the Grammy Awards, reminded me of a notable fact about my little town of Ridgway where I live, about 26 miles south of Montrose, where I work.  Ridgway is where John Billings of Billings Artworks creates the Grammy Award, which he's been doing for well over 25 years.  Check out his website.  It's rather fascinating. This got me thinking of some other claims to fame that Ridgway can make, such as being a favorite movie location, most renowned being True Grit with John Wayne back in 1969.  One of our landmark restaurants and watering holes is The True Grit Cafe.  Last year, we enjoyed our inaugural True Grit Days, which was quite successful and looks to become a wonderful annual event.  One of Ridgway's notable long-term and well-loved residents was the late Dennis Wea...

I am marketing Ouray County's first ever Colorado Built Green Certified Home. All I can say is that this experience is ruining my satisfaction with my current residence, in a good way! After spending hours with the builder, Scott Bridger of Bridger Construction Services Inc., going over the homes specs, and how it receives the Built Green approval, I could just feel the money pouring out of my not so "tight" home. To add insult to injury I just completed the Vaned course Building Green: The High Performance Home. Nothing like hours and hours of why most homes aren't very efficient to make you look critically at yours. Just look at this insulation slide:Don't get me wrong. I love my home. But, after you begin to understand what Building Green can do in terms of energy efficiency, durab...

Today is an historic day in the over ten tumultous year history of the golf course community formally known as Fairway Pines on Log Hill Village. Last year Heritage Inn & Suites purchased the entire development for $15million just minutes before the Planned Unit Development was going to be revoked by Ouray County Officials for failure to finish the plat requirements. Ever since then Strategic Real Estate Group, the managing partner of Heritage Inn & Suites, has overseen the improvements on and off site of the course. Divide Ranch & Club is breaking ground today at 1pm MST on Phase I of the new club house with food and a ceremony in the afternoon. Phase I will consist of a golf shop facility and a clubhouse with a commercial kitchen and bar & grill. The excavator shows up tomorrow morni...

This Saturday, August 25th, Gerry Weaver will donate the 60acre Dennis Weaver Memorial Park to the Town of Ridgway. It is a fitting testimony to the spirit that the Weaver's have always had towards this little corner of Colorado. The ceremony is open to everyone and will not be one to be missed. The 60acre park is part of the Riversage Subdivision recently approved through the Ridgway Town Council for 19 clustered home sites on approximately 160acres. The home sites will be available for sale once Final Plat is recieved and will more than likely be $300,000 and up for roughly 2acre sites. Full Story

Whew! I coordinated this years church in the park event and what a challgene that was. Thank goodness it all come together and I might even sign up to do it next year. A great time was had by all who came out for this annual Fourth of July event. From all the cooks on Saturday who helped make food for 400+ people, to all the sponsors who gave their time, energy, and resources, it truly was a community event. The music and message were inspiring and very well done. We look forward to mext years event when we can have more activites for the children such as, water balloon fights, gunny sack races, face painting, and more.

If you've ever seen the movie then you know what I'm talking about. It's a eye patch wearin', gun slingin', don't mess with me while I'm drinkin' my whiskey kind of attitude. True Grit was filmed in our town almost 40 years ago and this fall there may be a sort of reuniting in Hartwell Park. The Ouray News just reported today efforts to bring back members of the cast and other hollywood names for what could be the largest event inside the town limits. I'm not sure our little town can handle the crowd, but I'm sure we'll find a way. There are a lot of hurdles yet to be cleared, so stay tuned and mark your calendars for history in the making this September. It's the same weekend as the Imogene Pass Run which certainly describes individuals with some serious true grit.
