Greetings from Estes Park! The 4th annual “Santa Party”, sponsored by my company, The Yellow Mailbox Real Estate Services, took place on December 21 for the assisted living residents. This is a special event, not only for the residents that enjoy our annual Santa Party, but for my family as well...my youngest son Chase wouldn’t miss being one of Santa’s helpers for the world! This year, Scott Anderson and Ray Young provided the musical entertainment, with their rendition of “O Holy Night” bringing thunderous applause from both the residents and staff. Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived just as Scott and Ray finished their performance. “It is so much fun to watch the residents’ faces light up when they see Santa,” remarked activitiy director Carey Stevanus. Santa and his helpers handed out coz...

Greetings from Estes Park! As the mom of a 15 year old with Type 1 Diabetes, I'm constantly surrounded by the mis-information about this disease...so here's my contribution toward Diabetes Awareness month... Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are vastly different: Type 1 diabetes is an auto immune reaction that destroys the beta cells in the pancreas, creating an insulin-dependant condition, where Type 2 Diabetes is an insulin resistant condition. A diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes usually happens in those under 20 years of age, hence the term “Juvenile Diabetes” but it is possible to have an onset of this condition at any age. Type 1 Diabetes is not preventable and is not the result of any lifestyle circumstances such as being overweight, out of shape or eating too much sugar. It is not possible t...

Greetings from Estes Park! I was scouting out a place for my three sons to pose for a shot for our calendar this year and found this view of Long's Peak through the fence...the calendar shot location is a bit farther down the road. We are lucky to be enjoying the fall colors this late in the season, I'm thinking when a low pressure system rolls through here at the beginning of next week that it will be all over!

Greetings from Estes Park! Last night in Loveland, Colorado, the Estes Park High School Marching Band under the direction of Chuck Varilek and assistant director Dan Timbrell placed first in class 1A and 2A competition with a score of 58. The band will be traveling to Grand Junction for the State Finals on October 25. The 2010 show features the concert band music of Howard Hanson which has a high degree of difficulty. The show this year concentrates on the music and complex marching drills rather than a theme with props. Band Director Varilek commented,"the kids have a great chance to win first place this year against some competition from much larger schools. We need to focus on consistency for this show with our remaining rehearsals." Good Luck Bobcat Marching Band!

Fresh snow on the Continental Divide highlighted by the fall foliage of the trees in this picture is really a great way to start the day.  When you live in Estes Park Colorado you get to do this every day. At the end of the day there is a peacefulness that comes with the blanket of clouds and the rose color of the setting sun. Have a great day.

Greetings from Estes Park! Peak to Peak Highway, aka HWY 7, originates in Estes Park and is one of the most scenic drives between Denver and the "High Country" for viewing aspen leaves. Our aspen gawking season is an extra three weeks long this year, so you still have the opportunity to hop in the car and enjoy some spectacular golden leaves. To get to "Peak to Peak" Highway, head north from Denver or Boulder on HWY 36 to Lyons. Turn left at Lyons onto HWY 7...you will end up in Allenspark first, then Estes Park.

Greetings from Estes Park! The Estes Park Middle School Swim Team (of whom I am the proud mother of two swimmers) took second place this year at the state finals on Saturday behind a much larger school! The kids swam great and most posted huge time improvements, too. We are very proud of our swim program here in Estes Park and congratulate the EPMS kids who make it happen along with their wonderful coaches, Debbie Holmes and Russ Franklin!

Greetings from Estes Park! We are having an unusual fall here in the Rocky Mountains, with an extra three weeks of fall color! (no one is complaining...I'm thinking this is our reward for the snow in May) I have some really tall aspen trees in my backyard, and that's what it takes to get a shot like this, plus a few filters in the digital darkroom!

Greetings from Estes Park! We could see the very first snow of the season on Long's Peak this morning...and the aspen are not quite at their peak in the meadow in front at about 8000 elevation. It's always exciting to see the first snow, especially when it's this late in the season :-) The leaves should be spectacular again this weekend, if you have the chance, take a drive from Denver or Boulder up Highway 7 and enjoy the scenery!

Greetings from Estes Park! I just returned from showing property to a couple whose Realtor sister in Iowa found me on Active Rain. It's the best part of the job to be able to listen to a client's goals and then show them choices on how to make that happen. We had another spectacular day for looking at second homes here...80 degrees, sunny and a light breeze that was blowing the golden aspen leaves onto the evergreen branches. Who wouldn't want to live here?

I've heard a lot of people talk about lucky.  How lucky they are or how lucky a friend was.  Geeze, I won $10.00 on a scratch ticket, I'm so lucky. We have a saying here in Estes Park.  If you're lucky enough to live in the mountains - You're lucky enough.  Every day is special here and you can see by the picture we aren't the only ones that think so.  I was going to retire to my dream retirement location one day and retire in Estes Park, Colorado.  What if I don't live that long, what if I don't make it, what if the path changes?  Good enough questions for me to just pick up stakes and move.  Oh, I found a job later that wasn't the primary consideration. There have certainly been no regrets and I do feel lucky every day. Have a great day.

The Peak to Peak Highway and the area around Allenspark is absolutely beautiful right now.  The leaves in Rocky Mountain National Park will probably be peaking this weekend just in time for Elk Fest. Aspens surrounding the Visitors Center at Lilly Lake Driving to and from Allenspark the colors are breathtaking.  If you aren't taking the time to go to the Meadow Mountain Cafe to eat and enjoy the drive, you should be. Blanket of Aspens in front of Mount Meeker  If you have your camera, it is very difficult to make any kind of time on the drive because you are always stopped taking pictures. View of Long's Peak through the Aspens I have sometimes referred to the weather on particular days as being a "Chamber of Commerce" day.  We say that because it just doesn't get any better.  This wee...

Just a quick update on the Estes Park, Colorado upcoming Elk Fest and our "Fine" Fall weather.  I was talking to a very nice lady at the Hallmark store yesterday and she said that this is the best fall weather we have had in 78 years. Two Bulls in combat These two gentlemen are having a discussion about which one of  them is going to be successful and be the bull that gets herd of cows that is standing nearby. Magnificent 7X7 Bull Elk What they hadn't discussed yet, is that the winner of this little match gets to tangle horns with this seven by seven bull that seems to think all of the ladies in this herd belong to him. Come on up, the weather is fine. Hope you had a great weekend - we did.

Greetings from Estes Park! Our leaves are hanging around much longer than usual this year, and no one's complaining! The peak will most likely be next weekend, about three weeks late. However, we are enjoying bright sunshine, warm temperatures and a cool breeze. I guess this is our reward for surviving the snow that wouldn't stop in May! (totally worth it)

Greetings from Estes Park...where getting stuck in a rut is a good thing! We are in the middle of the Elk Rut...when the bulls bugle and the females follow in herds. It really is a hauntingly beautiful sound and not at all what you would expect from such a majestic creature. The elk are enjoying the unseasonably warm Indian Summer weather as much as we are, this big guy in my backyard was pretty relaxed this morning...

Greetings from Estes Park! We are enjoying some spectacular Indian Summer weather and the leaves are starting to change. One of the best scenic drives for "aspen gawkers" is Peak to Peak Highway (HWY 7) that originates in Estes Park and winds its way past Long's and Meeker Peaks, Allenspark and Lyons. If you are in the area, the next two weekends should be absolutely gorgeous in the mountains. I hope you have the chance to enjoy our aspen leaves!

Greetings from Estes Park! We are surrounded by a few forest fires at the moment, the firefighters have them well under control where there are homes, and the National Park is letting some that are remote forest areas in the Park to burn themselves out. One of the results of the fires is a smoky haze that makes for interesting sunrise and sunset skies. Here's what Long's Peak looked like a few nights ago...
