The sun, setting over the mountains, and the sound of birds painted the backdrop for my Sunday walk. It had been a glorious day in Denver, lots of people out enjoying the warm spring weather. Just thinking about it made me smile. I love taking Sunday evenings for myself and this last weekend, it was a fabulous walk along the Westerly Creek Dam.If you are looking for a little space and a great view, treat yourself this week and stop by Lowry, the former Denver Air Force Base. Drive north on Fairmount Drive from Alameda Avenue just past the AMLI Apartment Complex and turn right on Sports Avenue. Find a place to park. Not far from where you turned in, you will find a path that leads up the hill to the top of the Westerly Creek Dam. The dam was built by the Army Corps of Engineers to manage...

Live in Denver Monday - Friday & Head up the Hill for the Weekend! Sometimes I think that people that live in the Denver area are some of the luckiest people on earth.  We get to live work and play in the magnificent mile-high city and yet easily escape to the mountains whenever we can.  Steamboat Springs is just one of the wonderful places that you can get away to if you reside in the Denver area.  And in my opinion, summer in Steamboat is just what summer in Colorado is all about.  The drive is a bit longer than some of the other mountain resort towns, but it is well worth it.  The Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo takes place almost every Friday night in the sumer-time in Steamboat.  Hiking trails are everywhere from the ski mountain to the side slopes and some of the best wildflower trail...

I am into Earth Day this year.  Really into Earth Day.  Why?  Well for a lot of reasons, but the most important is because my kids are into it.  They have been fixated in the last few months on all types of environmental issues,as we all should be, and they have decided that we are all really making a difference for Earth Day this year.  So living in the Denver area, I have been on the search for some Earth Day related activities that will make a difference.  Here's is one I found that is definitely worth passing on. "7,000 Trees in 7 Days" is an event that is part of Greenprint Denver.  From Earth Day to Arbor Day (April 24 - 28) 2,400 volunteers will plant trees throughout the city at 40 different locations.  Check the map here to find one near you.  There is even a phone number to ca...

Party for the Planet at the Denver Zoo If you are new to Denver, or just have never been to the Denver Zoo, I would highly recommend attending the Party for the Planet to celebrate Earth Day.  Held throughout the weekend April 21 - 22 from 10 am - 5 pm. Special Events & demonstrations will occur throughout the day and should be fun for the whole family.  My own children are particularly interested in seeing the demonstration that shows us how to identify different types of wildlife by the tracks and other signs that are noticeable.  The Denver Zoo is located between Colorado Blvd and York streets and off of 23rd.  This is sure to be a popular weekend - come early!

The whine of the chain saw and the roar of the wood chipper disrupted the quiet Lowry Village neighborhood last week when numerous twenty to thirty foot trees were chopped down. It took almost eight years for the trees to grow the height of the houses and in less than 15 minutes per tree, they were gone. The builder, Village Homes, planted the trees too close to the houses and now that they were much larger, there were concerns that foundational issues and damage to homes would occur if the trees were left in the current locations. There were no options left to the Homeowners Association other than to cut the beautiful trees down. While it is definitely a loss to the neighborhood, the trees will be replaced with others that fit the available space. Whether or not Village Homes will reim...

I am here to soak up the knowledge of my coach and peers here as we kick off our competition today.  My name is Vali Wimberly of Denver, CO and the opportunity to learn how to establish and maintain a successful real estate blog is what I'm here for!  I'm excited to get to leech onto my coach, Teresa Boardman and really dig into what making a successful, interesting blog is all about.  She has taken me on as her apprentice in hopes that when this is all said in done we'll both be a little wiser, richer and more famous-okay maybe fame is a long shot.  My newborn blog will be written with the Denver Metro real estate consumer in mind.  Blog entries will give a taste of what Denver life is about here as well as giving a clear picture of the current Denver real estate climate and news.  Whe...

Some Mother's Day Dining Options in Denver, CO  If you are looking for something a little fancier than every day dinning, it is not too early to make reservations for Mother's Day Dining.  In fact if you don't do so soon, you'll be waiting in line for a walk-in table (if they even have any) - which isn't pretty on Mother's Day!  If you are new to the Denver Area, here are a few suggestions of some of my favorite places for a special celebration.  I have separated them into my own suggestions for Brunch or Dinner, but several of them serve both.  Note - some of these are more kid friendly than others, make sure you inquire about kid-options before making your reservations! BRUNCH IDEAS  Highlands Garden Cafe, Denver, CO -Located in the Highlands neighborhood of Denver, this is surely one...

Typically throughout my career in Denver real estate (14+ years) my busy market season has begun each year in January.  In any other year the phone has pretty much started ringing on January 2nd.  And then it really doesn't stop throughout the end of winter, into spring and summer.  This year has been a bit different.  Some blame it on the snow.  Some blame it on the market.  Some blame it on the economy.  But here is a news flash for home sellers!  The buyers have arrived!  They are here and out there and looking to buy your home.  Many media outlets are still focusing on negative issues and what a terrible market it is - but I am here to tell you that there are qualified buyers out there ready to buy houses! So yes, the full swing busy home buying season has been delayed a little bit ...

Does it seem like the weeds are winning the war?Just a few years ago when the drought was at its peak, it was amazing to see brown yards with the healthiest weeds I've ever seen. Those weeds seem to still hang on despite our best efforts. Is this finally the year to tackle the weeds and work on your landscaping? Have you checked out all the books, purchased your gloves and given your gardening tools a spit shine? There are numerous classes this time of year that shouldn't be missed if you are determined to win the war against the weeds. At the same time, you can Xeriscape to conserve water and create beautiful outdoor spaces.Denver Water features a private two hour consultation with a landscape professional. I was watching my 17-month old daughter play with some poker chips on the floor this evening, and was (momentarily) impressed with how methodically she was picking each chip up off the floor and putting it deliberately into the container. Pile A goes into container B. Chip to container, chip to container. I’m sure the parents out there can predict that this particular game did not last very long…it was just a few minutes of predictability and calm in the sea of anarchy which is my daughter. Soon, the chips were flying, container was crushed, and I was scrambling to make sure she didn’t end up pooping out blue poker chips for the next two days. It made me think how unpredictable life can be. I started out wanting to be a writer when I was in high school. In college I studied pre-med and ...

Visiting older Denver neighborhoods takes you into another world. Towering trees with bark patterns that beg a touch and homes that were built when horses were the normal mode of transportation are common place. We are lucky to live among daily reminders of the amazing history of Denver and its surrounding communities. Many Denver neighborhoods are designated historical districts that will require some additional approvals before a homeowner can make modifications to the exterior of their home. The Denver Landmark Preservation Commission was established to designate, preserve, enhance, and perpetuate structures or districts or architectural, historical, or geographical significance within the city of Denver. If your home is in a designated historical district, you will be required to ap...

Drip...Drip...Drip...The stream of water was making its way down my back and it was cold. I was standing on a covered porch at 424 Franklin Street and still getting dripped on. This small Denver bungalow needed some tender loving care to bring it back to life. A few months and three offers later, the house was ours. So began the journey of renovating for resale. The ultimate goals in Renovating a Historic Home for resale include making a profit and creating a beautiful and livable home. In order to make our profit, we expanded the square footage from 2600 (including the basement) to 3900 finished square feet with the addition of a second story and an extended first floor. The house needed to complement the surrounding neighborhood and the construction plans required approval from the Den...

Part of curb appeal includes having landscaping that includes beautiful trees. The Denver Digs Trees Program allows residents of Denver to receive trees for $20.00 each to add to the section of their yard that is in the public right of way. If you are unable to afford the $20.00 fee, you may be eligible to receive a free tree through the "Treeship" program.  The Park People sponsor the program. The organization is a private non-profit group who works to preserve, enhance and advocate for Denver's parks, recreation resources, open space and urban forest. There are three steps to get a "street tree". 1. Measure Your Property To be eligible for a new tree, the location where you will be planting must meet these space requirements:To continue reading:  Curb Appeal at a Discount , please fol...

Tickets are now on sale for the The Denver Center for Performing Arts performance of Disney's The Little Mermaid at the Ellie Caulkins Opera house.  If you have recently relocated to Colorado or have not yet been to the newly rennovated Ellie Caulkins Opera House, it is fabulous.  Whether you live downtown or one of the many suburbs, it is worth making the drive into the city to see the new facility. The performance itself is a premier event, it is actually going to first run in Denver before going to Broadway.  The performances begin on July 26th and will run until September 9th, but the best seats will sell soon.
