Regular visitors to the historic Venice Post Office building along the Windward Avenue Circle have likely laid eyes on a mural depicting the early history of Venice with the image of community founder Abbot Kinney at the center. The mural, created by artist Edward Biberman and entitled “Story of Venice,” was commissioned by the Section of Fine Arts of the United States and installed inside the post office in August 1941, according to the Venice Historical Society. Did you know that part of Venice, CA & Marina Del Rey are in Tsunami Areas? As you drive from Santa Monica, CA to Marina Del Rey, CA paralleling the Pacific Coast you will see these Blue Signs. I have lived for many years less than 500 yards from the Ocean. I have not really thought much of it as I drove by these signs. I was more amused by the signs, than scared. Then when the Tsunami took place in the Indian Ocean in December 2004 (Phuket Thailand) it looked scary, nevertheless very I felt it was so removed and the incident seemed very remote to me. I even felt that it was unlikely anything of this magnitude could occur in my back yard. (I consider the beach our back yard.) The iconic "Binoculars Building," designed by Frank Gehry, was constructed in 1991 as the headquarters for advertising agency Chiat/Day. The unique architecture of the building showcases two wings connected by a four-story pair of binoculars sculpted by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, will serve as Google’s eyes on the world. (Oldenburg is known for making huge sculptures of everyday things – cigarette butts, spoons, and such.) Combined with two adjacent buildings, the campus will total approximately 100,000 square feet. Many tourists visit California and go to Venice Beach and are totally oblivious to the Canals that are nearby.
