The second annual Eco Expo was held at the Vet's Hall in San Luis Obispo last month, with over 20 exhibitors. There was an enormous amount of useful information available, but one of my favorite booths was the one for My Fun Ride, a new concept for SLO. It's a cross between renting a car and borrowing one from your neighbor . . . a very economical way of being able to use an auto when needed without incurring the heavy expenses of ownership. The site calls this concept "car sharing," which is an accurate description. You buy a membership for $30 a year (plus a one-time $25 registration charge) and then you may rent a car for $6 an hour and 40 cents a mile (slightly more on the weekends). You pick up your car from a "pod" (there are three locations in SLO)...no waiting in line and no de...

I just found this article and wanted to post it.  With the holidays not so far away, I thought it would be good to start thinking about NOT buying puppies.  In my opinion this promotes puppy mills which are a travesty.  So please take the time to read this.  The animals who are abandoned, abused and put to sleep will be grateful and so will I.  Peace!   "I Want a Puppy for Christmas!" And Other Dumb, Holiday Ideas by                                                                                                        Jinky, the Dog of a Hollywood Wife   Someone you know wants to buy a puppy for Christmas or Chanukah and I am here to talk them out of it because the truth must be told. It's a typically dumb holiday impulse. But who wouldn't want a cute, fluffy puppy, you say. Yes it's ...

What a difference a year makes! This very desirable area had four homes for sale last summer, with nothing moving. Although the backlog eventually cleared up, it made sellers hold back and buyers wonder if they should buy a home in The Meadows. Not only did this home sell fast, but it sold for the full asking price of $569,000. San Luis Obispo has a number of desirable neighborhoods, but this one in particular appeals to familiies with children, and older people as well. The Meadows, on South Higuera, is directly across the street from the shopping center where Trader Joe's has opened, and which includes the Food for Less market and several new restaurants. It's a great area for families with small children, as there is only one way in or out and it's easy to control where the kids go. ...

Both are great ways to sign documents electronically.  Online, that is.  We're talking about paperless transactions.  Working from your virtual office (which can be your home-based business or your mobile office from anywhere in the world). The great thing about DocuSign is that YOU, the real estate professional, can sign your docs; then put "sticky notes" for your clients to sign; and THEY can read & sign online too!  Without ever printing out a single paper.  On the "down" side, you have to pay a monthly or annual fee to continue using the service. Here's a sample signature from DocuSign: At the top of the page, the entire document is coded with the date, time, and computer ID of the signature.  Note that each signature has a DocuSign code to verify the signer's identity. The great th...

I want to start off with confessing that I have become two weeks behind on my blog, I apologize to you all. The truth of the matter is that I went on a vacation to Shaver Lake and our family's cabin one week ago and then my next adventure was an engagement party. The beauty of that all is that it only took me three hours to go to either location from home base here in San Luis Obispo. That being said, I am very excited to announce that San Luis Obispo is kicking off our summer long Concerts in the Plaza. Every Friday night our downtown association and local businesses, mine included, promote, sponsor and present a different band in the Mission Plaza, downtown. For the rest of the summer I can be found helping behind the bar at the concert from 5 o'clock to 7 o'clock pm. We strive every ...

Yes I'm a Realtor®, but that is not synonymous with a salesperson.  Of course I help families buy their homes, families sell their homes, and families keep their homes.  But that is only the paid part of my career.  Here are some of the other duties I perform: I attend City Council meetings and speak out on behalf of home owners. I volunteer to build houses through Habitat for Humanity for my low-income neighbors. I answer many questions from prospective home buyers about every aspect of buying a home. I stay abreast of the ever-changing real estate techniques, rules, and government laws. Newspapers and magazines interview me for industry articles that educate home owners. I know the housing stats for local neighborhoods and use those stats to educate home sellers. I write letters to my...

What should a brokerage firm / real estate office bring to the table for its agents?  As an agent, here are some of the things I would expect my broker to provide, and I would compare real estate offices to find the best offerings of the below services: systems - turn-key systems in place large-scale opportunities that agents generally wouldn't get on their own instructional manuals for each task training (ongoing & regularly scheduled) on ALL aspects of real estate including contracts and building construction office meetings that add value coaching/motivational sessions/mentoring large-scale contracts (secured by Broker) leads (based on brand name or brand web site) prospecting events (held on a regular basis) opportunity for niche areas (foreclosures, luxury, etc.) support of agents ...

To every Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma, and God-Mother:  You must know that you are so valuable.  Your children may not have told you that they appreciate you (yet).  Children often get mad or say "I hate you" or "I can't stand you" when they're little.  They aren't very appreciative of parents.  Until they grow up and have their own children!  So remember your reward is in heaven when you receive that crown of righteousness and hear those words, "Well done, good and faithful servant." This week's Central Coast Adventure comes from the center of San Luis Obispo on Cerro San Luis Obispo or as the commonly referred to (incorrectly) Madonna Mountain. This is a pet peeve of mine when people call this mountain Madonna Mountain because that is not the true name of the mountain but because it is owned mostly by the Madonna family and has a giant "M" on the East side people have given it that name. The truth about the "M" is that it was put up there by Mission Prep Highschool. Okay, enough history about the name. About the Mountain: The mountain is one of the Nine Sisters here on the Central Coast. The Nine Sisters are a chain of nine ancient volcanic cores that stand out from San Luis Obispo all the way out to the Pacific Ocean in Morro Bay. This chain includes Islay Hill, C...
