Memorial Day in San FranciscoThe Presidio in San Francisco is now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area It is also is home to one of our national cemeteries. When exploring the Presidio, hiking or running on the trails, slow your pace when you near the National Cemetery, and take time to reflect on the poignant poem posted at the top of the hill, above the cemetery. The Young Dead Soldiers, by Archibald MacLeishThe young dead soldiers do not speak. Nevertheless, they are heard in the still houses: who has not heard them? They have a silence that speaks for them at night and when the clock counts. They say: We were young. We have died. Remember us. They say: We have done what we could but until it is finished it is not done. They say: We have given our lives but until it is fin...

Memorial Day in San FranciscoMemorial Day - this holiday weekend will find many of us taking the first camping trip of the summer, joining friends and family on picnics, heading to concerts, street fairs, etc. If you are in San Francisco on Monday, 5/25, the day we celebrate Memorial Day in 2015, a visit to the Presidio seems fitting. Head to the Main Post, where a parade begins at 10:30 AM, lead by the 191st Army band, ending about 30 minutes later with a 21-gun salute in honor of those we're remembering this weekend. At 11:00 in the National Cemetery the formal program begins. If you stroll to the top of the cemetery, you'll find this poignant poem, which speaks volumes. The Young Dead Soldiers, by Archibald MacLeishThe young dead soldiers do not speak. Nevertheless, they are heard in t...

San Francisco Active Rain Meet Up, Wednesday, May 13, 2015(left to right: Rob Spinosa, David Ames, Chris Hansen, Lottie Kendall, Mike Young, Jim Patton, Reagan Lee)The Presidio Social Club was the venue, and made a fine place to meet for lunch and talk. Located in the beautiful San Francisco Presidio, there's even parking available for the low price of --- get this -- $2.40 for 2 hours! (That's unheard of here in San Francisco where parking is at a premium.)By 1:30-ish business demands ended the get-together for most. Rob scooted back to Marin County; David to a sign off; Mike returning some distance to Vacaville/Fairfield area, and guest Reagan Lee on to his next appointment. However, two intrepid souls, Chris Hansen and Jim Patton joined me for a walk around the lower stretches of the...

America's Cup Virtual Traveler I only wish that I had set aside a couple of weeks to visit San Francisco this year, as the current America’s Cup Sailboat Race has become quite an exciting event.   Thanks to Lottie Kendall of San Carlos, CA for some updates of what’s happening on the bay in this very exciting series. For those lucky enough to be close, it’s been an action packed summer series on the bay with the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup, followed by the Louis Vuitton Cup (for the right to be the challenger to the current holder of the America’s Cup) and the finals of the America’s Cup itself which is coming to a conclusion in the next day or so. My thanks go out to Lottie for some excellent links and updates as to what’s been happening in the Bay this summer and through her blogs I a...

Park-Like Living in San Francisco While perusing Craigslist today I came across a posting for a single family residence in the Presidio that I just had to share with you... click on the photo to be taken to the craigslist post. PHA has enjoyed packing/unpacking several clients in the Presidio who have rented officers' quarters homes.  Most of them though have not been single family homes but rather side by side duplexes. Yet, they too, enjoyed 3,000 to 3,250 square feet of living space. Unpacking and organizing these homes has been a joy because of the large sized rooms, large closets and the basement!! ..... most basements are divided between a utility room, storage room and very large family/play room! The Presidio of San Francisco was once a military post and today is a beautiful pub...

Memorial Day Parade in San Francisco   Head over to the Presidio this Monday for an awe inspiring tribute to honor those who lost their lives while serving our Country. The Parade begins at the Main Post at 10:30am (near Sheridan & Lincoln) and will be led by the Pipes & Drums of the 191st Army Band. Shuttle buses will be available to transport folks to the National Cemetary for the formal program at 11:00am. The one-hour program will feature music, a color guard, and remarks by both civilian and military dignateries.  A 21-gun salute will end the program at noon. An inter-faith ceremony will follow the program at the nearby Presidio Chapel. While you are at the Presidio, you can also take your family to visit the Walt Disney Museum, a block away from the Main Post at 104 Montgomery St....

Janet, our newish receptionist at Paragon's Van Ness office, is a gorgeous red-head who's built like a pencil. She has fabulous clothes, but could also wear a sack cloth and ashes and still look great. So I trust her taste when she tells me that one of her favorite clothing stores is Luna Boutique on Sacramento in Presidio Heights. Christina Spaulding, Luna's owner has, according to Janet, a selection of clothes any woman could love, even if she is shaped more like a pear than a pencil. I've yet to make it out to Luna, mostly because I'm not much of a shopper-- but Janet has promised to take me to one of Christina's Thursday soirees, when a portion of the shop's take is donated to a specific charity. Shopping this way sounds more appealing, because I get to help a worthy cause, have a g...
