Eureka Valley (San Francisco, CA)

San Francisco has numerous parks and open spaces - over 220 of them - and while some are large and well known (think Golden Gate Park, Dolores Park, Alamo Square, Twin Peaks) some are barely known even to residents living close by. One often overlooked park is a small park in the central part of town, one with lovely views - Kite Hill. One winter day (one of the few rainy days we experienced this last winter) my husband and I decided to explore the Eureka Valley area of town. Not far from the Castro, just below Twin Peaks and Market Street, is a lovely neighborhood of single-family homes, apartment buildings and condos. Like many San Francisco neighborhoods, surprises are tucked away, often where least expected, and steep streets turn into staircases. Kite Hill was one such surprise, ap...

Exploring San Francisco - Acme Alley On a recent afternoon exploration of the Eureka Valley/Eureka Heights area of San Francisco, I spotted the charming Acme Alley, a narrow staircase that doesn't lead to much of anywhere. Located down the hill and across Market Street from Twin Peaks, tiny Acme Alley is a joy to behold, reminiscent of the beauty created in the book by Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden. Take a look at these pictures; perhaps you'll want to explore Acme Alley yourself--and the other nearby delights like Kite Hill and Corbin Street Park.

OK, I'll admit it-- I never ate at Ike's sandwich place  when it was at 16th and Sanchez because I hate crowds and lines. I'm told  the "Dirty Secret Sauce" and home made bread make it worth the wait, but  I don't care if Alice Waters is serving her goat cheese salad for free: I'm simply not going to stand in a line for up to three hours just to get something good to eat. Other people hate lines too, especially Ike's former neighbors. His old shop was pushed out in the fall because up to 30 people in line at a time turned a fairly quiet residential neighborhood into a noisy dirty place that made living there nearly intolerable. Double parked cars with boom box music. Noisy conversation. Shouting across the street. And trash. Lots of trash. So the neighbors protested. Loudly. The kerfuff...

In this case, that's exactly what drove the desired look prior to coming on the market.  A colleague of mine asked me to stage his seller's property earlier this year with the idea of keeping the mid-century/modern integrity of the home consistent (inside and out).  It was a beautiful William Wurster home in the Eureka Valley/Dolores Heights neighborhood that still had the original wood walls and general layout intact.  When my eye hit the "blonde" media console piece (in the back of the photo), I knew THAT was the piece to build on. *With the overabundance of 'wood on wood' in the room, I found that selecting high contrasting furnishings seemed to have the best effect. Combined with an aggressive listing price and keen marketing by the listing agent, this home was in contract in less t...
