The Rolling Hills Estates City Council tonight will weigh long-delayed plans for a residential development known as Butcher Ranch. Municipal staff have recommended approving the 11-home project at Palos Verdes Drive East and Palos Verdes Drive North, which has been discussed on and off for decades. Rising Stars, a philanthropic organization, presents "Gleefest 2010," its eighth annual gala to benefit foster youth education and the performing arts. The event will be emceed by ABC7 anchor Phillip Palmer and feature a live musical production with music from the television show "Glee." The $200 ticket gets you dinner, cocktails and the show. Proceeds allow the Norris Center's education department to offer performing arts scholarships to local disadvantaged and foster children who would not be able to participate in the program without financial assistance. Nansen Field, Rolling Hills Estates, is nestled in the midst of neighborhood homes.  There you will find a green patch of grass hidden away from the flow of traffic on Hidden Valley Road right off of Palos Verdes Drive North, and a block west of Hawthorne Blvd.  Nansen Field has a long history going back to the Vanderlip family era.   It was originally set aside for the Norwegian seaman who were on layover waiting for their ships to sail, and became their sports field.  The building located on the property was brought overland from Fort MacArthur and became the field's clubhouse. Elin Vanderlip is credited for convincing her husband's family corporation into selling the property for a small cost ($4300). No trip to Palos Verdes is complete without a mention of horseback riding.  One of the few communities that is still zoned for horses, the hill definitely supports the horseback tradition. For the city of Rolling Hills Estates, that support comes in the form of a 35-acre park called Ernie Howlett Park.   From the Rolling Hills Estates city website:   "This 35 acre park provides facilities to many sporting and leisure activities, including: four one-wall handball courts, multi-purpose athletic fields, a regulation basketball court, a sand volleyball court, picnic tables, barbecue pits, and a variety of playground equipment.
