The Jack Kramer Club opened in 1962 with just 9 tennis courts, 4 paddle tennis courts and several basketball courts.  In 1963, the junior Olympic swimming pool and original clubhouse were completed.  At that time, the membership purchased the land and facilities from Jack Kramer and issued stock certificates to its 246 original charter members.  In 1972 three tennis courts were added, the junior lounge was built and paddle tennis courts were removed and replaced with yet another tennis court.  The remodeling of the clubhouse in 1987 brought the pro shop and offices to the clubs current design. There will be a free concert at the Promenade of the Peninsula shopping center next Sunday June 18th that is sponsored by Remax Palos Verdes Realty. The concert will begin at 3pm and features the music of Toy Bombs and Ryan Darton. In addition to the concert, there will also be some fun events for the family including a dog parade, pet adoptions, etc.

The City of Rolling Hills Estates was originally incorporated in order to help preserve its rural environment and equestrian lifestyle.  The city operates the public riding rings and the Peter Weber Equestrian Center which has municipal boarding stables.  The Peter Weber Equestrian Center offers both boarding and comprehensive programs which include riding lessons and horse training.  There are 112 corrals, three riding rings, two turn-out pens and two hotwalkers.  The Center also sponsors lessons throughout the year, but now is offering its ever popular Summer Pony Camp.  They have instruction in both Western and English which includes jumping and dressage.  The Palos Verdes Peninsula has 25 miles of bridle trails that are maintained for the use of the community.  The center is locate...

Don Wallace and W6AMDon Wallace, a ham radio pioneer who worked as an amateur radio operator since 1913, operated W6AM as a ham radio operation from his land atop the Palos Verdes Peninsula at the junction of Armaga Springs road and Highridge road.  His antennae farm included a huge installation of rhombics antennaes each perched upon telephone poles, some over 150 feet tall. The site was originally acquired in the 1930's by Press-Wireless, owned by a group of newspapers to receive news dispatches from around the world. From the early 1900's through 1945, the area now known as The Peninsula Center on Silver Spur Road was periodically covered by seasonal lakes. In Elin Vanderlip's memoirs, she states that the lakes were drained in 1946 and replaced by a detention camp for prisoners, mainly who were there for missing support payments to their ex-wives. Other records indicate that some of the labor for the construction of Crenshaw Boulevard into Palos Verdes was provided by workers from this detention "honor" camp.    Peninsula Center, Silver Spur Road and Hawthorne Blvd. Left, 1960's,   Right,  Current Google Earth view. The Rolling Hills Estates City Council at their meeting on Tuesday voted to delay a vote on approving the Proposed Chandler Ranch Project until their next meeting on June 14th. Their was no public input heard at the meeting, but public comments will be heard at the June meeting. The Chandlers are proposing the 228-acre development in conjunction with the neighboring Rolling Hills Country Club, which would get a longer, Arnold Palmer-designed golf course and new facilities.

The Rolling Hills Estates Planning Commission approved yesterday the plans for the new 228 acre 114 home development on the current Chandler's Palos Verdes Sand and Gravel Co. landfill facility and which will include an expansion of the Rolling Hills Country Club golf course as well as a new clubhouse.  The approval occured after an agreement by the developers to donate $1 million for improvements to be made to equestrian facilities within the city limits, but does not require the developer to provide equestrian facilities for the new home sites. When many of us hear the name Chandler we immediately think of the sand and gravel pit in Rolling Hills Estates.  Linden H. Chandler, was the original owner; he moved here from Colorado when he was 9 and became an influential figure during the early growth of the Palos Verdes Peninsula.  Chandler was an active member of Los Rancheros Vistadores and rode in many Rose Parades.  Perhaps this is why he so clearly wanted  to see the land in this area preserved for horseback riding and hikers.  The Linden H.
