About 40 children have recently called in sick at Vista Grande Elementary school in Rancho Palos Verdes with symptoms of the Swine Flu. One student has been diagnosed with the flu strain, but had a very mild case of the swine flu and has returned to school. The students who have called in school have all been exposed to the student with the swine flu. School district officials have been quick to point out that the cases so far have been mild and no more serious than regular flu outbreaks. No need to close the school was seen.

The City of Rancho Palos Verdes is again struggling with the best strategy to deal with an exploding population of peafowl with the city boundaries. Many city residents have complained of the mess and damage that they create in their yards and roofs, while other city residents do not want them disturbed and love the ambiance that they bring to the area. The peafowl were originally brought to the area by Frank Vanderlip ( See the HISTORY OF RANCHO PALOS VERDES ) . The problem appears to be that the peafowl populaton has more than tripled since the last census was conducted in 2000. The City Council is now considering passage of an ordinance that would prohibit feeding of the birds, or interfering in their capture to relocate them and reduce their number in the city. What do you think of ...

The Owners of the new Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, which is scheduled to open on July 27th, has asked the City of Rancho Palos Verdes to loan them approx. $8 million in city hotel tax over the next 27 months to be repaid several years later at no interest.  Bob Lowe of Lowe Enterprises, the development partner in the Terranea Project, told the City Council that because of the grave economic conditions, that the projected ramp up period for the hotel will be longer and more expensive than anticipated, and that due to the poor credit market envirmonment, alternative financing is not available at this time. Mr. Lowe noted that many municipalities actually provide a full rebate of hotel taxes in the early years of a project to encourage and subsidize development like this in thei...

The long arm of the financial credit crunch reached out and touched Terranea, the coastal resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, before they could open their doors for business.   "The $480 million project on the former site of Marineland of the Pacific has been touted as a major new luxury development that would attract travelers from around the world, create hundreds of jobs and bring millions of tax dollars to Rancho Palos Verdes."  Melissa Pamer stated in an article that appeared in the Daily Breeze on May 5, 2009.  Mirroring the local economy and housing market, sales are down and easy credit is past history.  Representatives of the development have requested Rancho Palos Verdes to refund up to $8M in hotel tax revenue over the next 27 months.  The City Council has taken the matter under c...

The market for real estate on the Palos Verdes Peninsula is definitely picking up. In the last 2 weeks, I have picked up a new listing, put two houses in Rancho Palos Verdes into escrow for two of my buyer clients, and I have two more listings coming up in the next couple of weeks. An example of the activity in the market is that there were multiple offers made on both of the homes that my clients just signed purchase agreements for. I think that buyers are finally recognizing that this may be the best time in years to buy a home due to the record low interest rates, and the great deals that sellers are offering in the market. Buyers are getting the sense that the bottom of the real estate cycle may have been reached, or is at least very near, and that this period of time may be looked ...

PORTUGUESE BEND ANCIENT LANDSLIDE COMPLEXBRIEF HISTORY AND DESCRIPTION OF ADMINISTRATIVE ACTIONS Rancho Palos Verdes has the distinction of having one of the largest, if not the largest, landslides in the contiguous 48 states. The total area of what is commonly referred to as the ancient landslide is approximately 870 acres in size. Today the area is made up of a series of smaller landslides, which have shown varying degrees of movement during the last 50 years. It is not unusual for this entire area to sometimes be referred to as either the Abalone Cove Landslide or the Portuguese Bend Landslide but these are actually distinct slide areas. In addition there are two other identified slides which are known as the Klondike Canyon landslide and the Flying Triangle landslide. The Portuguese...

Rancho Palos Verdes is now taking a new look at the wind turbine electrical generation issue after a city resident, Guillermo Ramirez, put up a 35-foot-tall wind turbine without first seeking city permission. Rancho Palos Verdes allows such systems in commercial and institutional zones, but not in residential areas.   Daily Breeze Photo: Robert Casillas  The 35-foot-tall Skystream 3.7 - a small wind turbine marketed for residential use - overlooks Palos Verdes Drive East from Ramirez's fruit tree-filled backyard. Mr. Ramirez initially flew an American Flag from the top of the structure for several weeks, and when no one complained, he installed his new wind turbine. After the turbine was installed, however, several neighbors complained. The City of Rancho Palos Verdes is now reviewing t...
