Commodores Club of the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce hosted the 47th annual Sandcastle Contest The 47th Annual Sandcastle Contest was yesterday in Corona del Mar.  The sandcastles are absolutely amazing. There are architecture firms, businesses, families and children competing in this event. It is a great way to spend the day with your family either building the sandcastles or just watching the incredible talent. I went to the sandcastle  contest with my two daughters Heather and Morgan. Here are some photos of the sandcastles.     Here is one called Gold in the Bird's Nest representing the Olympics in Bejing 2008.                     This one here is called the "Sand Witch".       You can see the incredible detail that is put into each sandcastle. Mama D's opened in July 2005, just a couple of doors down from my office.  There had been several restaurants in the same location over the years; I believe five in the previous five years.  Having had a few great restaurants that I enjoyed close on me, it was with some trepidation that I decided to have lunch there one day with my husband.  I did not want to find a new favorite restaurant only to have it too disappear.   Mama D's is located at 3012 Newport Boulevard in Newport Beach.   Obviously, Mama D's has escaped that fate, and it was obvious to me on my first visit that there was a lot of potential.  We were greeted with a huge smile and felt so welcomed the moment we walked in the door.  Mama D's had been opened only a few days the first time we visited, and at the time, we thoug...

A Dog Day Afternoon in Newport Shores One of the many benefits in living in Newport Shores is the Canal that surrounds the area. The Canal is fed by the ocean, and the water level goes up and down with the tide. Many people who have lived in Newport Beach do not even realize that it exists. There are homes in Newport Shores that are built right along the Canal. The streets in Newport Shores that have homes on the Canal are Canal Street, Canal Circle and  62nd Street. The homes on Canal Street and Canal Circle have views to the west with sunset views. There is also a predominant ocean breeze that typically comes from the west. The homes that are located on 62nd Street have morning sunshine, and look to lush landscaping and greenery. The lot sizes on 62nd Street are typically the larger ...

Avalon, Catalina Santa Catalina is a rocky island located off the Southern California coast which is approximately 22 miles long, and 8 miles wide. William Wrigley, Junior was instrumental in the development of Catalina Island. Wrigley originally bought the island in 1919 and it was improved with a hotel, services, and the Casino building which still stands today. In 1921, Wrigley sold lots in the city of Avalon. This is the same Wrigley who developed Wrigley chewing gum, and Wrigley also owned the Chicago Cubs. The Chicago ballpark which was originally named Cubs Park, changed it's name to Wrigley Field in 1926 in honor of William Wrigley, Junior. In Avalon, the Casino is now utilized as a motion picture theater, and the upstairs can be utilized for private events.  The Casino was bu...
