I always find it fascinating when landmarks become controversial. It might be the home of a famous, or infamous person, or the site of a gruesome murder. Celebrity homes become landmarks, as do homes built by well-know architects (homes built by Neutra in Los Angeles, for example, or the Fallingwater home by Frank Lloyd Wright in Pennsylvania). Sometimes a place where a significant event occurred becomes a landmark that raises controversy. San Diego, and specifically La Jolla, has such a landmark, on Mt.Soledad. Mt.Soledadis one of the highest points in coastal San Diego County, at 882 feet, and offers some incredible views of the county and the coastline...on a clear day to the Mexican border and north about 40 miles to Camp Pendleton just beyond Oceanside. Mt. Soledad is known for bei...

I recently read an article over at Sign on San Diego entitled, What’s everyone got against La Jolla? It was a response to the La Jolla landslide earlier this year and it got me thinking… “What has everyone got against La Jolla?” I grant you, La Jolla may be considered an affluent community with some of the most expensive homes on the west coast, best public and private education in the San Diego area, a string of luxury shopping centers, spas and golf courses, but when you delve deep into the hearts of La Jollans, you will find a people committed to giving back to the world that has given us so much. A simple search on The Charity Guide, you will show that La Jolla is host to more than 300 unique charities which account for over $100 million charity dollars each year. Now, does that sou...

The La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club opened in 1927 as the La Jolla Beach & Yacht Club.  A gentleman by the name of Frederick William Kellogg purchased the property in 1934 to create an oceanfront resort. Kellogg changed the emphasis on the club to that of an exclusive oceanfront tennis resort to attract out of town visitors, as well as La Jollan's.  In 1940 the responsibilty for the Club fell to William Scripps Kellogg, Frederick"s son.  William was the driving force behind the resort's success as a tennis and vacation destination.  He oversaw the construction of the Playa Del Oro Apartment and the F.W. Kellogg commercial building.  He was known for taking children for rides on the beach in a 1915 Packard, know as the "Old Black Goose". The children who rode in the convertible became me...

Tuesday, several homeowners in the Soledad Mountain part of La Jolla were notified that they shouldn't stay in their homes overnight due to concerns about soil instability. Wednesday morning as engineering crews were drilling holes to learn more about the soil condition, the earth moved and confirmed what many had feared. The only surprise here is that this surprised anyone. Everyone in La Jolla knows the history of this area, with slides dating back to 1961, but occurring as recently as 1994.Question. What agent who values repeat business sells a client a home in this area at any price? My guess is that many will be asked similar questions. In court. The boom San Diego real estate market led many to think short term. What a shame.

California has a reputation for land slides, earthquakes, and shifting earth. San Diego is no exception. We have not suffered the significant damage from earthquakes that has occurred elsewhere in California (e.g., San Francisco), nor have we has the serious landslides that had hit the state in the last few years apparently due to heavy rainsmany will recall the slide in Laguna Beach in Blue Bird Canyon in 2005, causing a bunch of multi-million dollar homes to slide down the hill; 15 homes were destroyedsevere rains in the winter of 2005 caused, once again, a signifcant landslide in La Conchita, killing 10 and damaging or destroying dozens of homes8 condos were ultimately destroyed in the La Costa area of Carlsbad in 2005 - there is debate about the cause of the damageSan Diego has had ...
