La Jolla, CA Real Estate News

My office with Coldwell Banker Residential is in La Jolla and we are, in my opinion, the premier office in the nation.  Not only do I think so.. but actually we have won numerous awards for our outstanding agents.  Today I received an update of new listings in the La Jolla area and was impressed to see that there is a new listing on Camino de la Costa listed by my fellow La Jolla agent for $23,000,000 to $26,000,876.  This is a "Value Range" pricing which basically means that the seller will "entertain" offers in that price range and is not obligated to look at offers for a lower price.  This beautiful French Normandy style home sits on almost 3/4 acre of prime La Jolla land.  Unlike most areas of the country, our land is more valuable than our homes... thus small vacant lots selling fo...

Our website at http://www.lj-homes.com/features all of the neighborhoods and developments in La Jolla and today I would like to introduce two more neighborhoods - Country Club & Hidden Valley.  COUNTRY CLUB in La Jolla is a neighborhood named for the golf course which meanders through the hills of this beautiful seaside village.  This private golf club is set above the Village of La Jolla and estate homes overlook many of the lush fairways.  The homes are custom and many feature spectacular ocean views, hillside retreats and are highly sought after when they are available for sale.      HIDDEN VALLEY is located on the north side of Mount Soledad (where the cross is) and features hillside homes with spectacular north shore views.  Many of these homes are on cul de sacs along winding road...

The fabulous US Open Golf Championship, one of the most prestigious in the USGA tour, is coming to San Diego in just a few months. This is the first time the event has been held in America’s Finest City, and Southern California has not hosted the event since 1948. Preparations are well under way and excitement is mounting for one of the oldest golf championship events around – this year is the 108th. The Open is one of the 13 national championship events that are held each year by the USGA, 10 of which are for amateurs only. Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, a prominent (public) course in its own right, will be the host of this magnificent event being held from June 9th through the 15th. The course boasts magnificent views of the ocean and the hilly terrain, and is adjacent to the ...

Like most areas of San Diego, La Jolla is facing some challenging times when it comes to real estate. Although the high end market, generally speaking, is somwhat insulated from the harsh realities other price points face, it is still a tough market for many.  La Jolla, is sometimes said to mean "the jewel" (from the Spanish "la joya"), however it is believed to be derived from a Native American language, that of the La Jolla band of Luiseno Indians, who inhabited the area for centuries before the arrival of the Spanish.  42,808 residents within the city of San Diego, California call La Jolla home. Population figures are imprecise because La Jolla's borders are indistinct. Generally the community's border starts at Pacific Beach to the south and extends along the Pacific Ocean shore nor...

Green Real Estate in San Diego I just got finished reading an article on Green Real Estate by Forbes. The article was primarily about green real estate, real estate that is built to be environmentally friendly. Green meaning that the home is built to minimize its carbon footprint on the earth which would reduce the amount of carbon dioxide gas contributing to global warming. Some of the building design techniques are solar, recycled rainwater, solar chimneys, rooftop gardens, natural ventilation and more. After reading this article I would say that San Diego could really use this new green technology in its new home building industry and refitting of existing homes. San Diego is a great place to use solar and recycled water. We're already doing this but not on a big enough scale. I pers...

There is no better way to get to know your neighborhood than driving without a map and getting lost. When I arrived in La Jolla, California in 1976, I was captivated by the beauty of the Ocean that seem to be all around you  La Jolla is surrounded by hills with great ocean views. Nevertheless, there are wonderful narrow curvy roads that lead you to the top of those hills and end in cul-de-sacs with outstanding ocean views. As a Realtor, I have had the opportunity to view many of these homes that do not have the ocean views but do have the La Jolla Old Charm. Spanish and Contemporary homes going up Lookout Drive and Hillside. I have explored all those roads. Driving around the many La Jolla Beaches there are small streets West of La Jolla Blvd. and West of La Jolla Shores Drive with many...

Visit Torrey Pines State Reserve in La Jolla CA   Carlsbad, and much of California for that matter, is blessed with a gorgeous coastline – the edge of our continent amidst a sea of urban life. (see a past article on the California Central Coast and Nepenthe, along the Big Sur coast for more amazing scenery). But just a few miles south is an isolated, wilderness area that is breathtaking for the vistas of hills and rocks meeting the sea, and home to our country’s rarest pine tree, the Torrey Pine. Torrey Pines State Reserve is home to incredible and dramatic scenery, and this rare tree which only grows at the reserve and on Santa Rosa island off Santa Barbara’s coast. The state reserve is a wonderful place to capture a glimpse of what the Southern California region was like prior to the...

If you are thinking of moving to La Jolla, you must already know that it is one of the most spectacular locales in the world. Some cities are the embodiment of luxury, and La Jolla, California is no exception. Coastal La Jolla is  paradise for both the traveler and the resident. Sitting just north of San Diego, it offers a craggy and breathtaking coastline with heart-stopping views. Add to this natural beauty a world-class village, high budget shopping, fine dining and lodging, a top-ranked university (UCSD) and medical school--along with a climate that is probably the best on earth, and you have The Jewel, or La Jolla as Spaniard explorers once called it. Granted, La Jolla real estate is expensive and luxury buyers from all over the world would like to own some of their own. With a pop...

I always find it fascinating when landmarks become controversial. It might be the home of a famous, or infamous person, or the site of a gruesome murder. Celebrity homes become landmarks, as do homes built by well-know architects (homes built by Neutra in Los Angeles, for example, or the Fallingwater home by Frank Lloyd Wright in Pennsylvania). Sometimes a place where a significant event occurred becomes a landmark that raises controversy. San Diego, and specifically La Jolla, has such a landmark, on Mt.Soledad. Mt.Soledadis one of the highest points in coastal San Diego County, at 882 feet, and offers some incredible views of the county and the coastline...on a clear day to the Mexican border and north about 40 miles to Camp Pendleton just beyond Oceanside. Mt. Soledad is known for bei...

I recently read an article over at Sign on San Diego entitled, What’s everyone got against La Jolla? It was a response to the La Jolla landslide earlier this year and it got me thinking… “What has everyone got against La Jolla?” I grant you, La Jolla may be considered an affluent community with some of the most expensive homes on the west coast, best public and private education in the San Diego area, a string of luxury shopping centers, spas and golf courses, but when you delve deep into the hearts of La Jollans, you will find a people committed to giving back to the world that has given us so much. A simple search on The Charity Guide, you will show that La Jolla is host to more than 300 unique charities which account for over $100 million charity dollars each year. Now, does that sou...

The La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club opened in 1927 as the La Jolla Beach & Yacht Club.  A gentleman by the name of Frederick William Kellogg purchased the property in 1934 to create an oceanfront resort. Kellogg changed the emphasis on the club to that of an exclusive oceanfront tennis resort to attract out of town visitors, as well as La Jollan's.  In 1940 the responsibilty for the Club fell to William Scripps Kellogg, Frederick"s son.  William was the driving force behind the resort's success as a tennis and vacation destination.  He oversaw the construction of the Playa Del Oro Apartment and the F.W. Kellogg commercial building.  He was known for taking children for rides on the beach in a 1915 Packard, know as the "Old Black Goose". The children who rode in the convertible became me...

Chic Backyard Entertainment Set-ups in La JollaHome theatre systems are becoming a standard requirements with many Luxury La Jolla home buyers.  But we have a twist on this trend, take it outdoors instead of a room in your La Jolla Luxury home.  The whole concept of backyard entertainment all started with the Princess Cruise Lines: Movie Under the Stars when plasma televisions were placed on the outside of the ship for everyone to watch their favorite movie or TV show while enjoying their favorite cocktail or activity. This was a big hit, people loved it and the trend has expanded onto other ships as well.  Now you can take that idea and apply it to your La Jolla yard with your very own private outdoor theatre.  You can have a quiet evening at home and under stars with a few friends and...
