An Ugly Patch Can Ruin The Rest Of The Room     I'm sure this is something that we have all seen ourselves; that ugly patch that just draws our attention. We know that it is important to fix the plumbing, electrical or anything else behind the surface, we don't want to shortcut on those repairs. Once all that is done, let's make that patch look like new.

After The Shower Pan Demo, This Was Discovered in Sacramento   I get calls for dry rot and water damage repairs at various stages. Sometimes, I get to be a part of the whole process and other times I get to do a part of the restoration of the damaged property in Sacramento. It is all good and appreciated. When looking at the rebuilding of some water damage in Sacramento, I came across this hole with plastic over it. Since I was not involved with the demolition I have no idea what the reason for the hole was. I had asked the owners about the hole and they stated that the hole was in the sub-flooring and not a part of the water damage demolition. The plastic was likely added by the demo team. So the question is, why is the hole in the floor? At this point, I do not have an answer for yo...

Those Eaves Take A Lot Abuse.   I was walking around the back side of a Folsom home renovation project coming up and had to notice the eaves. It looks like it has taken some hard knocks over time. The rafter ends have rotted and been repaired and recently a satellite dish was install in this same area. There are safer and better ways to attach a satellite dish that doesn't require drilling holes in the roof eave.

My husband is much more enthusiastic about taking public transporatation than I am but that's because at heart he is a Chicagoan. I prefer to think of public transportation as hiring a limo, not taking the bus or Light Rail. Because my days of standing on bus corners are over. They were over when I turned 19 and I never looked back. Of course, when I was 19, I was living in Minneapolis and freezing my tush off in the winter. That was an excellent reason to buy a car. Although, every so often I will take the Capitol Corridor train on Amtrak to the B.A.R.T. into the City, but I look at that experience as being on vacation. When you're on vacation, you can ride a train car filled with chickens and goats and no air conditioning and be happy. Although the Amtrak is actually a far cry from th...

What's New In Plumbing? You May Not Care, But Know!   As a General Contractor in Sacramento, I get to see trends come and go over time. When it comes to the field of construction and building materials there is always trends that change how things appear and how they work. I’m sure we can remember when the single handle faucet first came out. What a cool idea! It looked sleek and the parts were fewer. No longer did we need a two handle system. What about use of the new fluorescent bulbs that are energy efficient? I don’t think that Home Depot even sells the incandescent bulbs anymore. Of course, Granite counters are the new norm when it comes to counters. We could go on and on with all the changes. But this is one that you may not have noticed. The angle stops, that shutoff valve unde...

Using Photoshop to Create After Photos Before You Start Work   I got a call from an apartment manager in Folsom, CA for an estimate to install some stacked stone to the end of some of the buildings. Stacked stone can add value to your property, makes for great curb appeal, and can help attract quality tenants.     The cost of materials can be high so it is a good idea to know what is involved and have a good sense of what it will look like before making that commitment. How can you do this? Well there are programs that can simulate the building materials, but I thought I’d try it with Photoshop.     The owners have an idea for the color and style of the stacked stone they are considering installing, so I searched for an image of that type of product. While the image had to be stacked,...

How Much is it Going to Cost to Repair the Water Damage in my Folsom, CA Home? As a Dry Rot and Water Damage Repair Contractor in Folsom, CA, I hear this all the time. I wish I had a quick answer but I don’t. The repairs required for one home will be different in the next. Since water damages can vary, some things have to be taken into consideration before a cost estimate can be given. These are the major factors that will determine the cost of the repair of water damage. The area of damage. This makes sense; a small leak will be in a limited area. If the damage is contained to the space around the toilet, this should be a quick repair. A burst pipe in the attic that rains down over the whole house can involve a lot of time and effort to repair. Detecting the problem early is importan...
