Victoria Di Silvestro "died a hero," firefighters said Tuesday.  At 5 a.m. Sunday morning a fire broke out in Di Silvestro's apartment, started by a heating pad that was left in the on position on a couch downstairs.  Firefighter's later determined the smoke alarms were not working in the apartment, despite a form signed by the tenant that the alarms were in working order upon her occupancy.  Di Silvestro and her son, Anthony Bookhamer were found in the upstairs of her two-story apartment. When firefighters found Di Silvestro, age 36, they rolled her over to get her out and discovered her 6 year old son, Anthony Bookhammer, beneath her.  "Di Silvestro also held Anthony outside the front upstairs window so that he could breathe air with less smoke and heat while she was stuck inside," sai...

There are currently 12 foreclosure listings and 12 short sale listing in Del Norte County. Today almost every one of the REO (foreclosure) listings did a price reduction.  Yes, prices are dropping and there are some good deals to be had.  Click on the link above and check out the Mouth of the Smith River Road listing.  It is a fabulous deal. This home sits at the Mouth of the Smith River. Yep you can have a view of the Smith River pouring into the ocean. There aren't too many views like that on earth, especially for $285,000. The home sits on .75 acre with a detached 2 car garage, and the home has a living room, family room with fireplace, three bedrooms, two baths, nice kitchen and huge, I mean huge bonus room downstairs where you can put all the kids.  There is a lovely view from mos...

I had a great time yesterday at the annual Seacruise Car show in Crescent City at Beach Front Park.  There were about 400 entries, lots of delicious food, good music and fun. This is a 1965 Cobra, one of my husbands personal favorites.  He drooled over this car for a few minutes and then joined the Chief of Police in drooling over another Cobra not far from this one. 1963 Stingray Corvette. The weather was delightful.  The ocean is a short distance on the other side of the structure in this photo.    Below: 1961 Corvette (my favorite) 1957 Nomad Wagon (Chevy) My son, Jim Gatti. Seacruise is fun for the entire family, not just car enthusiasts. There was a very nice crowd of friendly folks.  My husband, Garry, and I saw a lot of people we know and a few of my clients.  It was a very nice ...

Thursday started out as usual, but my quick jaunt to First American Title to drop off some paperwork ended in disbelief when I was told that they were closing their doors next Tuesday, October 1st. Unfortunately, the downturn in the economy is effecting all aspects of the housing industry, not just lenders and real estate agents and it isn't over yet, in fact many say it's just the beginning.  After reading Matt Heaton's post today on the whole financial/bailout, my hope is that we can hang on through the shake out and come out stronger on the other side.  If you haven't read Matt's post titled, Three More Massive Banks on the Brink and his very excellent post on why Failure is Important, give them a read.  He does an excellent job explaining the current crisis in an easily understandab...

Our company does BPOs as well as property sales and lately, we have seen an increase in BPO orders in our BPO department.  A BPO is a Broker's Price Opinion, or a real estate broker's opinion of value based on a site inspection, this could be a drive by or an interior inspection, and the current active and sold comparables.  It is similar to an appraisal, but not as thurough.  There are many reasons someone or some company would want to order a BPO, but typically, they are ordered by banks that are about to agree to a short sale on one of their properties, or they are of interest to investers before they decide to purchase the property.  Recently, we have been receiving a good amount of BPO orders from lenders and banks who are about to embark on a short sale or to analyze their lost if...

So you made it to Crescent City, CA and you're wondering now what?  There are plenty of things to do in August. First thing to do is go to South Beach.  South Beach is a large stretch of beach that greets you when you first drive into Crescent City. There is plenty of parking. There is also plenty to do.         How about Boogie Boarding at South Beach?  I advise you wear a wet suit.  They are available for rent or purchase at several local establishments.                 You can make your own pool or play in the sand...                   Take the dog for a stroll...                     Visit with friends and get a tan...or sunburn in this case...                   Or share the moment with your main squeeze. There is also surfing, kite flying and swimming at South Beach.                ...

RE/MAX Coastal Redwoods has Community Pride - I have been at Re/max Coastal Redwoods now for about 4 months.  Since I started there, I have been busy, busy, busy.  The owners of my Remax office have a lot of energy and like to get involved in community events.  Our county fair was July 31 - August 3 and the theme was, "Are you tough enough to wear pink?" Pink, of course, is the color used by breast cancer survivors to celebrate their achievement in overcoming the disease. The week before decorating for the fair, we decorated in purple for the breast cancer relay for life, a big event in our community for raising both money and awareness for breast cancer research (I will have a post on that soon). This is Rose, one of the owners of my Re/max office.  She has more energy than any 5 agent...

Affordable Housing is Coming to Crescent City, CA!!   Today I read in the Del Norte County Newspaper, the Daily Triplicate, that our area is going to be getting some affordable housing developed for "working families that make up to 60 percent of Del Norte County's median income. The 73 units will rent for $300 to $900 a month."  The project is being spearheaded by a development company from southern California called the MacFarlane Costa Housing Project.   The state has allocated a $2 million grant for an affordable housing complex in Crescent City, but the project still faces financial challenges.   According to the Triplicate article: "It could take years before construction begins. The developer, MacFarlane Costa Housing Project of Long Beach, is still trying to secure $8-10 million...

During the past week, members of the community and volunteers from the SICC Skateboarding youth organization and agents from Lucky Star Realty have been helping with the maintainance work at the Crescent City Skateboard Park.  The goal is to keep the skatepark well maintained so that the kids and people who visit the park will be safe and not have accidents involving the equipment at the park.    As evidenced from the story today in the Daily Triplicate Newspaper, http://www.triplicate.com/news/story.cfm?story_no=9385 the skatepark is finallly getting some attention and work done on it so that our youth can have a place to go and stay out of trouble.

Today's Go Skateboarding Day event at the Crescent City Skatepark was a great success!  There were a lot of parents and children there to support the whole event.  I am proud and happy for our community to have such great support for their children and our youths in a positive way.  I will be posting more pictures and video of this event soon.  This event meant a great deal for most of the kids who did not have a love for any other sport than skateboarding and it is a positive out lit for them.  I would like to say thank You again to the whole town of Crescent City California for supporting our youth.  I would also like to thank Richard Miles (http://www.triplicate.com/news/story.cfm?story_no=9214)  for volunteering his time to help with the Del Norte County Skateboard Park Committee an...

Yesterday I volunteered at the local skateboard park and helped fix some ramps and make sure that everything is safe for the kids and people who come and play there.  I love volunteering and being involved some way with the community and our children because they are our future.  Here is a snipet from the local newspaper, the Daily Triplicate in Crescent City, CA about it (link: http://www.triplicate.com/news/story.cfm?story_no=9193) : Making a safe place to skate Published: June 19, 2008 Click this picture to view a larger image. The Daily Triplicate/Bryant Anderson Thavisak ‘Lucky' Syphanthong puts new bolts in a skate ramp at the Crescent City skate park on Wednesday. He and other volunteers from the Stuck in Crescent City Skateboard Association replaced the bolts on all the ramps at...

Today I drove to Crescent City for a Realtor Caravan.  A Realtor Caravan in Crescent City means that agents on the Local Board of Realtors will gather together, line up some of the current and new listings on the market, and go view each house from interior to out, one by one.  This is always fun and I always try to go to as many Caravans or Realtor tours as I can because I believe that being a professional real estate agent, I should preview and know every home and property listing that is on the market, that way, when a potential buyer or seller asks me about what homes are on the market in certain price ranges, or if I have seen a house that they are interested in, I can proudly say, "Why yes! I have been inside!"  Also, for a real estate professional to join the local association an...

Happy Mother's Day to everyone!  With our busy schedules as Realtors and real estate professionals working day to day, we can forget about our family sometimes and we need to take a moment each and everyday to spend with them, especially today being Mother's Day.  After all, our family is what most of us work hard for.  Today for Mother's day, I took my mother and my family on a picnic at one of the special parks surrounded by fresh air and the Redwoods that living in Del Norte and Humboldt County California provides.  It is nice living up here because the pace of life is a little slower than in the big cities and we are surrounded by nature all over, the Redwood Forest inland, and the Pacific Ocean to the west.  After lunch, we then took a stroll at one of the beaches in Crescent City ...
